Automated anxiety detection using probabilistic binary pattern with ECG signals

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Anxiety disorder is common; early diagnosis is crucial for management. Anxiety can induce physiological changes in the brain and heart. We aimed to develop an efficient and accurate handcrafted feature engineering model for automated anxiety detection using ECG signals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We studied open-access electrocardiography (ECG) data of 19 subjects collected via wearable sensors while they were shown videos that might induce anxiety. Using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, subjects are categorized into normal, light anxiety, moderate anxiety, and severe anxiety groups. ECGs were divided into non-overlapping 4- (Case 1), 5- (Case 2), and 6-second (Case 3) segments for analysis. We proposed a self-organized dynamic pattern-based feature extraction function-probabilistic binary pattern (PBP)-in which patterns within the function were determined by the probabilities of the input signal-dependent values. This was combined with tunable q-factor wavelet transform to facilitate multileveled generation of feature vectors in both spatial and frequency domains. Neighborhood component analysis and Chi2 functions were used to select features and reduce data dimensionality. Shallow k-nearest neighbors and support vector machine classifiers were used to calculate four (=2 × 2) classifier-wise results per input signal. From the latter, novel self-organized combinational majority voting was applied to calculate an additional five voted results. The optimal final model outcome was chosen from among the nine (classifier-wise and voted) results using a greedy algorithm.

RESULTS

Our model achieved classification accuracies of over 98.5 % for all three cases. Ablation studies confirmed the incremental accuracy of PBP-based feature engineering over traditional local binary pattern feature extraction.

CONCLUSIONS

The results demonstrated the feasibility and accuracy of our PBP-based feature engineering model for anxiety classification using ECG signals.

Recent Advances in Multiplexed Wearable Sensor Platforms for Real-Time Monitoring Lifetime Stress: A Review

Researchers are interested in measuring mental stress because it is linked to a variety of diseases. Real-time stress monitoring via wearable sensor systems can aid in the prevention of stress-related diseases by allowing stressors to be controlled immediately. Physical tests, such as heart rate or skin conductance, have recently been used to assess stress; however, these methods are easily influenced by daily life activities. As a result, for more accurate stress monitoring, validations requiring two or more stress-related biomarkers are demanded. In this review, the combinations of various types of sensors (hereafter referred to as multiplexed sensor systems) that can be applied to monitor stress are discussed, referring to physical and chemical biomarkers. Multiplexed sensor systems are classified as multiplexed physical sensors, multiplexed physical-chemical sensors, and multiplexed chemical sensors, with the effect of measuring multiple biomarkers and the ability to measure stress being the most important. The working principles of multiplexed sensor systems are subdivided, with advantages in measuring multiple biomarkers. Furthermore, stress-related chemical biomarkers are still limited to cortisol; however, we believe that by developing multiplexed sensor systems, it will be possible to explore new stress-related chemical biomarkers by confirming their correlations to cortisol. As a result, the potential for further development of multiplexed sensor systems, such as the development of wearable electronics for mental health management, is highlighted in this review.

Modeling the Design Characteristics of Woven Textile Electrodes for long-Term ECG Monitoring

An electrocardiograph records the periodic voltage generated by the heart over time. There is growing demand to continuously monitor the ECG for proactive health care and human performance optimization. To meet this demand, new conductive textile electrodes are being developed which offer an attractive alternative to adhesive gel electrodes but they come with their own challenges. The key challenge with textile electrodes is that the relationship between the manufacturing parameters and the ECG measurement is not well understood, making design an iterative process without the ability to prospectively develop woven electrodes with optimized performance. Here we address this challenge by applying the traditional skin-electrode interface circuit model to woven electrodes by constructing a parameterized model of the ECG system. Then the unknown parameters of the system are solved for with an iterative MATLAB optimizer using measured data captured with the woven electrodes. The results of this novel analysis confirm that yarn conductivity and total conductive area reduce skin electrode impedance. The results also indicate that electrode skin pressure and moisture require further investigation. By closing this gap in development, textile electrodes can be better designed and manufactured to meet the demands of long-term ECG capture.
