Perceived Impact of COVID-19 on Cyberabuse, Sexual Aggression, and Intimate Partner Violence Among U.S. Young Adults

Quarantine guidelines that arose with the COVID-19 pandemic limited opportunities for social interaction, raising concerns about increases in intimate partner violence and cyberabuse while simultaneously restricting access to help. The current study assessed increases in cyberabuse, sexual aggression, and intimate partner violence victimization and perpetration during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in a U.S. nationally representative sample of young adults ages 18 to 35, recruited from a probability-based household panel. Data were collected between November 2020 and May 2021. Descriptive analyses were conducted to assess the prevalence of any self-reported increase in cyberabuse, sexual aggression, or intimate partner victimization or perpetration during the COVID-19 pandemic. Logistic regression models were run for each outcome measuring any increase compared to no increase. Approximately one in ten U.S. young adults ages 18 to 35 reported experiencing an increase in cyberabuse victimization (12.6%) and cyberabuse perpetration (8.9%) during the pandemic. Similar proportions were observed for increased sexual aggression victimization (11.8%) and perpetration (9.0%). More than one in five respondents (21.4%) reported that their intimate partner was more physically, sexually, or emotionally aggressive toward them during the pandemic. Conversely, 16.2% of respondents reported that they were more physically, sexually, or emotionally aggressive themselves toward an intimate partner, compared to their behavior before the onset of the pandemic. Having an intimate partner and staying at home more than usual during the pandemic were protective factors for both cyberabuse and sexual aggression victimization. Respondent age, education, and race and ethnicity were not associated with increased victimization or perpetration of cyberabuse or sexual aggression. However, women reported lower odds of increased sexual aggression perpetration than men. These findings improve understanding of changes to interpersonal abuse and associated risk factors during a period of social disruption.

Collateral effects of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders on violence against women in the United States, January 2019 to December 2020

BACKGROUND

The necessary execution of non-pharmaceutical risk-mitigation (NPRM) strategies to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 has created an unprecedented natural experiment to ascertain whether pandemic-induced social-policy interventions may elevate collateral health risks. Here, we assess the effects on violence against women (VAW) of the duration of NPRM measures that were executed through jurisdictional-level orders in the United States. We expect that stay-at-home orders, by reducing mobility and disrupting non-coresident social ties, are associated with higher incident reporting of VAW.

METHODS

We used aggregate data from the Murder Accountability Project from January 2019 through December 2020, to estimate count models examining the effects of the duration of jurisdictional-level (N = 51) stay-at-home orders on femicide. Additionally, we used data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System to estimate a series of count models that examined the effects of the duration of jurisdictional-level (N = 26) stay-at-home orders on non-lethal violence against women, including five separate measures of intimate partner violence (IPV) and a measure of non-partner sexual violence.

RESULTS

Results from the count models indicated that femicide was not associated with COVID-19 mitigation strategies when adjusted for seasonal effects. However, we found certain measures of non-lethal VAW to be significantly associated in adjusted models. Specifically, reported physical and economic IPV were positively associated with stay-at-home orders while psychological IPV and non-partner sexual violence were negatively associated with stay-at-home orders. The combination measure of all forms of IPV was positively associated with the duration of stay-at-home orders, indicating a net increase in risk of IPV during lockdowns.

CONCLUSIONS

The benefits of risk-mitigation strategies to reduce the health impacts directly associated with a pandemic should be weighed against their costs with respect to women's heightened exposure to certain forms of violence and the potentially cascading impacts of such exposure on health. The effects of COVID-19 NPRM strategies on IPV risk nationally and its immediate and long-term health sequelae should be studied, with stressors like ongoing pandemic-related economic hardship and substance misuse still unfolding. Findings should inform the development of social policies to mitigate the collateral impacts of crisis-response efforts on the risk of VAW and its cascading sequelae.

Reproductive health challenges during a flood: A qualitative study

AIM

The study aimed to investigate women's reproductive health challenges during floods.

DESIGN

This study is qualitative, specifically employing content analysis with an inductive approach.

METHODS

Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews between July and December 2021. The study involved 13 women affected by floods in Golestan province, Aq Qala Township, and also included seven healthcare providers and officials. Before the interviews, informed and written consent was obtained from all participants. The sampling process continued until data saturation was achieved.

RESULTS

The analysis of the participants' experiences in this study revealed four main categories of requirements, which were as follows: Maternal and Child Health with four subcategories, Essentials of Women's Health Care with two subcategories, Problems of Relationships with two subcategories, and Aggression and Physical Violence with two subcategories. In conclusion, during floods, women encounter numerous challenges in preserving their reproductive health. Recognizing and understanding these challenges can be instrumental in effectively planning measures to prevent or address them during disasters like floods.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE IMPACT

Every disaster has unique conditions and challenges. The health requirements of individuals impacted by floods differ from those affected by other natural disasters. By identifying the specific reproductive health needs of women affected by floods, midwives and other healthcare providers can enhance their planning efforts, enabling them to better address and fulfil these needs during such critical situations.

Changes in Mental Health, Emotional Distress, and Substance Use Affecting Women Experiencing Violence and Their Service Providers during COVID-19 in a U.S. Southern State

Research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed many unintended consequences of mandated safety precautions, including increased perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV), increases in substance use, and worsening mental health conditions. We conducted a repeated, cross-sectional survey of survivors of IPV, a longitudinal survey of service providers working in an IPV shelter, and interviews with both. We conducted surveys at the beginning of the pandemic and nearly half a year later to assess mental health and, for clients, substance use. Results showed that two small samples of survivors living in the shelter in 2020 and 2021 experienced both mental health decline and increased use of substances. Qualitative data from in-depth interviews suggest that COVID-19-related restrictions mirrored survivors' experiences of power and control in violent relationships. Further, IPV service providers-essential workers during COVID-19-experienced stress associated with reports of burnout and mental fatigue. This study suggests that community-based organizations can help mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on survivors of IPV but should avoid adding additional work for staff as service providers experienced mental and emotional stress.

Hospital discharges for substance-related injuries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a descriptive surveillance study using administrative data

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated behavioural changes have contributed to an increase in substance-related hospital discharges, and has altered the injury epidemiology landscape in Canada. We sought to evaluate hospital discharges for substance-related injuries during the pandemic compared with prepandemic and to identify subpopulations that have been greatly affected by substance-related injuries during the first year of the pandemic.

METHODS

We compared data on hospital discharges in Canada from before the pandemic (March 2019-February 2020) with discharges during the first year of the pandemic (March 2020-February 2021) using the Discharge Abstract Database. We identified discharges for substance-related injuries using codes from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision. We calculated percent changes, age-standardized rates and age-specific rates of discharges for substance-related injuries.

RESULTS

Hospital discharges for substance-related injuries increased by 7.1% during the first year of the pandemic. Discharges for intentional injuries decreased by 6.3%, whereas unintentional substance-related injuries increased by 15.1% during this period. Male patients accounted for 95.6% of the increase in hospital discharges for substance-related injuries during the first year of the pandemic. We observed a percent increase among discharges for injuries related to alcohol, opioid, cannabinoid, hallucinogen, tobacco, volatile solvents, other psychoactive substances and polysubstance use.

INTERPRETATION

We observed an increase in hospital discharges for substance-related injuries during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with the same time period before the pandemic. This work will provide useful insight into the ongoing management of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as future policy and health care planning related to substance use in Canada.

Sex, Gender, and Alcohol Use: Implications for Women and Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines

Alcohol use is coming under increasing scrutiny with respect to its health impacts on the body. In this vein, several high-income countries have issued low-risk drinking guidelines in the past decade, aiming to educate the public on safer levels of alcohol use. Research on the sex-specific health effects of alcohol has indicated higher damage with lower amounts of alcohol for females as well as overall sex differences in the pharmacokinetics of alcohol in male and female bodies. Research on gender-related factors, while culturally dependent, indicates increased susceptibility to sexual assault and intimate partner violence as well as more negative gender norms and stereotypes about alcohol use for women. Sex- and gender-specific guidelines have been issued in some countries, suggesting lower amounts of alcohol consumption for women than men; however, in other countries, sex- and gender-blind advice has been issued. This article reports on a synthesis of the evidence on both sex- and gender-related factors affecting safer levels of drinking alcohol with an emphasis on women’s use. We conclude that supporting and expanding the development of sex- and gender-specific low-risk drinking guidelines offers more nuanced and educative information to clinicians and consumers and will particularly benefit women and girls.
