Abstract
Padel is a worldwide racket sport that is growing each year. The unilateral upper limb repetitive movements of this sport may lead to shoulder structural and functional adaptations, which may alter muscle mechanics, however evidence is limited. We aimed to investigate if there is morphological, mechanical and functional shoulder symmetry between upper limbs of professional padel players. Fourthteen (7♂ and 7♀) professional Brazilian padel players were evaluated at supraspinatus muscle thickness (MT), stiffness, shoulder rotation range of motion (ROM), shoulder internal and external rotation peak torques and their ratios (ER/IR) and fatigue index torque. Subsequently, were compared all variables between dominant and non-dominant sides (α = 0.05). Total work, IR and ER absolute and normalised torque were higher in the dominant limb (p < 0.05). Moreover, 78% and 64% of the athletes presented reduced ER/IR peak torque ratio values in the dominant and non-dominant upper limb, respectively. No differences in supraspinatus MT, stiffness and shoulder ROM were found. Our study found that Brazilian professional padel players have asymmetrical shoulder ER/IR peak torques ratio. Therefore, it's recommended for padel players to strengthen the ER of the dominant shoulder and both IR and ER of the non-dominant shoulder to address side-asymmetry and reduced ER peak torques.

Abstract
Background Accurately measuring shoulder strength in overhead athletes is critical, as sufficient strength is essential for safe and sustained performance during repetitive athletic movements. Isokinetic dynamometry (ID) offers dynamic strength assessments that surpass the capabilities of static methods, such as manual muscle testing and handheld dynamometry. The dynamic assessment provided by ID may enhance upper extremity evaluation, aiding in the prediction of injury risk and the determination of return-to-sport criteria for overhead athletes. Purpose The purpose of this review was to examine the existing literature concerning the application of isokinetic shoulder strength testing in rehabilitation and clinical decision-making processes among youth athletes who perform repetitive overhead activities. Study Design Scoping review. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and EBSCO Host databases, covering publications from 2000-2024. Search terms included "isokinetic dynamometry," "shoulder," and "youth athlete." Inclusion criteria focused on youth athletes (<18 years) engaged in overhead sports, excluding those with neurological conditions or those designated as college or professional athletes. The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. Results A total of 23 articles met the inclusion criteria. Volleyball and swimming were the most studied sports, with the most common testing position being the seated 90/90 position. Variations in testing speeds and outcome measures, such as peak torque and external rotation (ER) ratios, were identified. Conclusions Isokinetic dynamometry is a valuable tool for assessing shoulder strength in youth overhead athletes. It provides critical insights into muscle strength dynamics, aiding in injury prevention and rehabilitation. Further research is needed to optimize strength assessment protocols and enhance clinical decision-making for safe return-to-sport practices.

Abstract
Muscular weakness and strength imbalance between the thigh muscles are considered risk factors for knee injuries. Hormonal changes, characteristic of puberty, strongly affect muscle strength; however, it is unknown whether they affect muscular strength balance. The present study aimed to compare knee flexor strength, knee extensor strength, and strength balance ratio, called the conventional ratio (CR), between prepubertal and postpubertal swimmers of both sexes. A total of 56 boys and 22 girls aged between 10 and 20 years participated in the study. Peak torque, CR, and body composition were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, respectively. The postpubertal boys group presented significantly higher fat-free mass (p < 0.001) and lower fat mass (p = 0.001) than the prepubertal group. There were no significant differences among the female swimmers. Peak torque for both flexor and extensor muscles was significantly greater in postpubertal male (p < 0.001, both) and female swimmers (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively) than in prepubertal swimmers. The CR did not differ between the pre- and postpubertal groups. However, the mean CR values were lower than the literature recommendations, which brings attention to a higher risk of knee injuries.

Abstract
The shoulder joint-related dynamic control ratio (DCR) is derived by dividing the peak eccentric moment of the external rotators (ER) by the peak concentric moment of the internal rotators (IR). However, given the inherent limitation associated with a single value DCR, an alternative approach is to calculate it at fixed angular intervals. This preliminary study aimed at exploring the variation in the DCR at a resolution of 1° and under fatiguing external and internal rotation exertions. Eighteen young men, 10 experienced and 8 without experience in overhead sporting activities completed two separate series of 45 ER eccentric and 45 IR concentric isokinetic repetitions at 120°/s. The analysis focused on repetitions 1-3 (TR1), 21-23 (TR2) and 41-43 (TR3). The relative fatigue values for both muscle groups and for both E and NE participants were 25-40% with significantly higher fatigue resistance in eccentric compared with concentric exertions. The DCR traces varied substantially linearly for most of the internal rotation range of motion while significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in their values within group between TR1, TR2 and TR3 and between experienced and non-experienced participants. An antagonistic moment equilibrium (DCR = 1) was reached in all instances and for both groups only during TR3 with a significant progressive reduction in this moment as fatigue increased. Thus, considering the DCR as an angle-based variable rather than a single value isokinetic parameter, may add new insight regarding the interplay between the rotatory muscles of the shoulder joint.

Abstract
CONTEXT Overhead athletes place tremendous demands on the shoulder complex, which result in adaptive kinematics but potential susceptibility to injury. This study aimed to compare shoulder glenohumeral range of motion (ROM) and rotator muscles strength in bilateral and unilateral overhead sports. DESIGN Cross-sectional study; secondary care. METHODS Forty-two elite athletes (17.7 [4.5] y; 42.9% female), including 18 swimmers and 24 badminton players, were included. Preseason glenohumeral rotation ROM and isokinetic shoulder internal and external rotator muscles strength was tested (60°·s-1). Bilateral (nondominant:dominant) and agonist:antagonist (external rotator:internal rotator) conventional and functional deceleration ratios (eccentric to concentric) were calculated. The impact of sport and number of competitive years on shoulder ROM and strength was tested. RESULTS Badminton players had greater glenohumeral internal rotation deficit, total ROM deficit, and lower bilateral strength ratio than swimmers (P < .050). Rotational strength was positively associated with the competitive years, but greater in swimmers (P < .050) and on the internal rotator (P < .001). The functional deceleration ratio was negatively associated with the competitive years on the dominant side in swimmers and for both sides in badminton. CONCLUSIONS Unilateral overhead athletes had greater ROM and rotational strength asymmetries than bilateral athletes. Interestingly, the functional deceleration ratio was lower over time on the dominant shoulder for both sports, but, surprisingly, also on the nondominant shoulder in badminton, potentially creating a greater risk for shoulder injuries.

Abstract
Success in volleyball largely depends on motor abilities, particularly on maximum strength, power, jumping, and speed performance. However, a small number of studies assess the relationship between motor abilities and the effectiveness of volleyball technical skills. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the impact of the strength of the upper and lower limbs on the efficiency of serve reception during a 2 vs. 2 game, as well as to evaluate the results of motor measurements in the context of determining the usefulness of current testing procedures. The study involved a carefully chosen group of 12 girls aged 12–13 years (body height: 176.5 ± 4.2 cm, body mass: 58.6 ± 5.1 kg, and training experience: 43 ± 15 months) selected for the Lower Silesian Regional Volleyball Team. The following tests were conducted: handgrip strength with a hand dynamometer, bent-arm hang, 2 kg medicine ball throw, shoulder joint internal rotators (IR) peak torque, standing long jump, spike jump, and countermovement jump. The measurements of the shoulder joint IR peak torque were performed under isometric (at 10°, 35°, and 65° rotation angles) and isokinetic (at 60°/s, 180°/s, and 300°/s) conditions. The efficiency of serve reception was evaluated during a 2 vs. 2 games by using Data Volley statistical software. The strongest positive relationships were observed between the serve reception efficiency and the peak torque and power of the shoulder joint IR, the medicine ball throw distance, and handgrip strength. Jumping variables showed no associations with efficient of serve reception. Consequently, we suggest adding protocols to volleyball training that include strength exercises aimed at developing the IR muscle group. The isokinetic upper limb test should be introduced as a valid tool in selection process. Coaches who do not have access to modern research equipment should use the medicine ball throw test to evaluate strength abilities as an alternative assessment of the serve reception efficiency.

Abstract
CONTEXT Both isokinetic testing and functional tests are often used during patient rehabilitation programs. Most researchers have assessed the relationship of isokinetic testing and functional tests in parameters such as peak moment, work, or power. However, little information exists regarding the acceleration and deceleration parameters and their relationship to function. DESIGN The purpose of the study was to investigate the concept of acceleration and deceleration of the knee flexor and extensor muscle groups during isokinetic testing and its relationship to function. METHODS Twenty-six healthy individuals (14 men and 12 women) participated in the study. Isokinetic bilateral concentric knee flexion and extension muscular performance was assessed isokinetically at the angular velocities of 60°/s, 180°/s, and 300°/s. Functional performance was also assessed using (1) single hop for distance, (2) triple hop for distance, and (3) single timed hop. Functional data were normalized to body weight. A P value <.05 was considered to be significant. RESULTS Fair and moderate to good correlations (r = .396, P = .045 to r = .705, P = .001) were discovered between flexors' and extensors' acceleration/deceleration variables and the normalized to body weight functional tests. CONCLUSIONS Appropriate understanding of isokinetic parameters as described in this study, including acceleration/deceleration values, may provide useful information about the functional ability of the lower limb muscular system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have grouped different overhead sports and evaluated together the isokinetic strength of shoulder internal (IR) and external (ER) rotator muscles. However, muscular adaptations could be a consequence of the specific sport, and some strength imbalance between these muscles may exist as a consequence of the muscular demand unique to the sport. Therefore, grouping different overhead sports together may not be adequate. PURPOSE To compare strength balance ratios between different overhead sports (volleyball, handball, swimming, judo, baseball, softball, functional movements performed at high-intensity interval training, and tennis) with a control athletic group (no overhead group). STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 237 athletes were submitted to isokinetic shoulder strength tests. The isokinetic concentric and eccentric peak torque values of shoulder internal IR and external ER rotator muscles were measured. Conventional (CR) and functional strength ratios (FR) were calculated. RESULTS There were no significant differences between the sports for the CR in the male group. Female softball athletes (90.4±13.6%) had a significantly higher CR than judo (67.3±6.9%), volleyball (74.9±15.9%), and swimming athletes (70.3±8.7%). In the female group, judo athletes had lower FR values (0.76±0.19) than soccer athletes (1.31±0.35), volleyball athletes (1.24±0.27), functional movements performed at high intensity (1.10±0.1), and softball athletes (1.40±0.39). Female handball athletes also had a lower FR (0.99±0.25) than soccer athletes (1.31±0.35) and softball athletes (1.40±0.39). Male handball (0.90±0.23), tennis (0.86±0.30), and judo (0.68±0.22) athletes had lower FR values than soccer athletes (1.20±0.21) and volleyball athletes (1.25±0.28). CONCLUSIONS CR for males may be analyzed together, as there were no significant differences between them. However, for females, the CR for softball athletes should be analyzed individually. As there were several differences between the overhead sports according to the FRs, the authors suggest caution in grouping overhead athletes across multiple sports. These results could have important implications for the design of injury prevention and rehabilitation programs associated with the shoulder joint in overhead sports. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 3.

J Strength Cond Res 35(3): 846-858, 2021-Preferential limb function must be sustained through repetitious asymmetrical activities for continuous athletic development and, ultimately, optimal athletic performance. As such, the prevalence of limb dominance and between-limb differences is common in athletes. Severe between-limb differences have been associated with reductions in athletic performance and increased injury risk in athletes. However, in the current literature, the terms limb preference and limb dominance have been used interchangeably. Together, these terms include a limb that is subjectively preferred and one that is objectively dominant in 1 or more performance measures from a variety of athletic tasks. In this review, we (a) discuss reported correspondence between task-specific limb preference and limb dominance outcomes in athletes, (b) provide greater context and distinction between the terms limb preference and limb dominance, and (c) offer pragmatic strategies for practitioners to assess context-specific limb dominance. A limb that is subjectively preferred is not necessarily objectively dominant in 1 or more athletic qualities or sport-specific tasks. Further to this, a limb that is objectively superior in 1 task may not exhibit such superiority in a separate task. Thus, limb preference and limb dominance are both task-specific. As such, we propose that practitioners intentionally select tasks for limb dominance assessment which resemble the most relevant demands of sport. Because limb dominance profiles are inconsistent, we suggest that practitioners increase assessment frequency by integrating limb dominance testing into standard training activities. This will allow practitioners to better understand when changes reflect sport-specific adaptation vs. potential performance or injury ramifications.

Abstract
CONTEXT Badminton continues to be a highly competitive sport where training is introduced at an early age and load has intensified. This exposes players to a greater risk of injuries, in particular when assessing related training outcomes such as strength, agonist-antagonist ratio, and bilateral deficit among adolescents where age- and sex-associated growth and development should be considered. OBJECTIVE To evaluate strength profile of the upper and lower limbs among adolescent elite Malaysian badminton players. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Forty-eight asymptomatic athletes (24 males and 24 females) were grouped into early and late adolescence (13-14 y old and 15-17 y old, respectively). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Strength (absolute and normalized) of the external/internal rotators of the shoulder and flexor/extensor of the knee and strength derivatives, conventional strength ratio (CSR), dynamic control ratio (DCR), and bilateral deficits were measured. RESULTS Males showed greater strength in all strength indices (P < .05). The older group had greater strength compared to younger for most of the upper and lower limb indices (P < .05); these effects diminished when using normalized data. For females, there was no age group effect in the shoulder and knee strength. All players displayed lower shoulder and knee normative values for CSR and DCR. Dominant and non-dominant knee strength were comparable between sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS For males, growth and maturation had a greater contribution to strength gained compared to training, whereas for females, growth, maturation, and training did not improve strength. The normalized data indicated that training did not improve all indices measured apart from external rotator strength in females. All players also displayed lower normative values of CSR and DCR. These results suggest that training in elite adolescent Malaysian badminton players lacks consideration of strength gain and injury risk factors.
