Environmental Impact of Urbanization, Bank Credits, and Energy Use in the UAE—A Tourism-Induced EKC Model

Accessing the role of tourism, renewable energy, and green finance in shaping the sustainable future

Worldwide efforts to achieve ecological sustainability include addressing the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Additionally, the issue of lowering CO2 emissions in developed and industrialised nations, such as China, remains unsolved. Therefore, this study assesses the impacts of tourism, renewable energy, climate disasters, and financial development on carbon emissions in China for the period 1990-2022 by using Fourier Cointegration analysis under both triangular hypotheses using the ARDL approach and bivariate causality tests with a frequency domain structure. The study found that tourism seems to increase climate change by driving energy use, whereas renewable energy counters it. Climate-related disasters perpetuate climate change, while financial growth supports and hinders it, based on where it is geared. However, the work does show that sustainable tourism practices, coupled with even higher levels of renewables investments and green finance efforts to help meet climate change commitments in China, are crucial. The avenues for further research and limitations are also discussed.

Assessing the impact of green finance on sustainable tourism development in China

The escalating urgency to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable development globally has emphasized the critical role of Green Finance (GF) in fostering responsible practices across industries. The tourism sector has drawn significant attention due to its substantial environmental impact, necessitating the implementation of robust financial mechanisms to mitigate its ecological footprint. China, recognized as a key player in the global tourism arena, the convergence of rapid economic expansion and the imperative for environmental conservation presents a distinctive set of challenges and opportunities. The study employed the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methodologies to systematically evaluate the impact of GF. The findings of fuzzy AHP indicate the critical role of environmental sustainability measures (GF2) as the topmost impacting factor. This refers to the practice of utilizing financial mechanisms and instruments to support initiatives that promote environmental conservation, minimize ecological footprints, and foster sustainable development. While financial allocation and effectiveness (GF1) and policy and regulatory framework impact (GF4) also hold significant importance in shaping sustainable tourism development. Moreover, the results of fuzzy TOPSIS identified top strategies such as green bond innovation for ecosystem regeneration (S1) and circular economy integration (S4), which can play a significant role in promoting sustainable tourism practices by facilitating initiatives aimed at ecosystem regeneration and integrating circular economy principles into the tourism industry.

Research in tourism sustainability: A comprehensive bibliometric analysis from 1990 to 2022

Although multiple bibliometric studies have been conducted to analyze publications on various topics within tourism, little attention has been dedicated to systematically analyzing scholarly production on the topic of tourism sustainability. Consequently, this paper aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric and systematic review of tourism sustainability. The collected data include 6326 publications retrieved from the Scopus database. The bibliometric technique consists of two major analyses: one on the domain (levels of analysis) and one on knowledge structures. The results indicated a remarkable evolution of tourism sustainability research involving authors, sources, and publications on this subject. Several associations and nations made significant contributions to this theme. Moreover, science mapping approaches were used to thoroughly grasp tourism sustainability-related research's social, intellectual, and conceptual structure. By giving in-depth overviews and insights connected to tourism sustainability and its knowledge structures, this review article has various implications for scientific study and practice.

Analysis of how environmental degradation affects clean energy transition: evidence from the UAE

Considering the alarming rate of environmental degradation, all countries are looking for solutions to close their environmental gaps in order to ensure long-term sustainability. In order to achieve green ecosystems, economies seeking clean energy are motivated to embrace environmentally friendly practices that can support resource efficiency and sustainability. In this sense, the current paper addresses measuring the link between CO₂ emissions, economic growth (GDP), renewable and non-renewable energy (RE), tourism, financial development, foreign direct investment, and urbanization in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aim of this paper is to empirically evaluate the link between CO₂ emissions and macroeconomic factors in the UAE. The UAE was chosen as the country for the case study as the UAE is one of the world's richest oil-based economies and one of the countries with the highest per capita income, adopts sustainable technologies, and has signed the Paris agreement supporting the transition to clean energy. To verify the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for UAE, the timespans for the years 1990-2021 have been chosen according to data availability. The long-run coefficients supported the EKC hypothesis of an inverted U shape for income and CO₂ emissions, according to the findings. Notably, urbanization and financial development both reduce pollution while foreign direct investment increases environmental pollution. The study recommended the creation of more environmental policies to promote sustainable business operations and nationwide green awareness, increase the use of clean energy technology, reduce energy intensity, and achieve a net zero carbon target.
