Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigates the diagnostic potential of serum Kallikrein-related peptidase 8 (KLK8) in detecting left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). METHODS A total of 62 hypertensive patients with LVH, 60 without LVH, and 60 healthy controls were analyzed. LVH was defined by echocardiography using LVMI thresholds (>95 g/m2 for females, >115 g/m2 for males). Serum KLK8 levels were measured via ELISA, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis assessed its diagnostic performance. RESULTS KLK8 levels were significantly higher in hypertensive patients with LVH (8.59 ± 1.59 ng/mL) than in those without LVH (5.80 ± 1.35 ng/mL) and healthy controls (3.68 ± 0.82 ng/mL). KLK8 positively correlated with blood pressure and cardiac structural parameters, including IVST, LVPWT, and LVEDD. ROC analysis revealed high sensitivity and specificity, indicating KLK8's potential as a biomarker for early LVH detection in hypertension. CONCLUSION In hypertensive patients, KLK8 demonstrates good diagnostic value in predicting LVH.

Abstract
Avian nephritis virus (ANV), which belongs to the family Astroviridae, is associated with different clinical manifestations (enteric and kidney disorders) in poultry. Despite being a significant pathogen of the avian industry worldwide, information regarding genetic features of these viruses in India is scarce. In this study, 386 intestinal samples collected from 37 slaughterhouses in two north Indian states (Rajasthan and Haryana) were screened for ANV with reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) targeting the conserved ORF1b gene, followed by nucleotide sequencing of the amplified product. RT-PCR and sequencing confirmed the presence of ANV in 32 clinical samples (8.29%), with concurrent infections of infectious bronchitis virus, chicken astrovirus, and fowl adenoviruses observed in some clinical samples (n = 4). Virus isolations were successful from four out of 12 ANV-positive clinical samples passaged via the yolk-sac route in specific-pathogen-free embryonated chicken eggs. Additionally, the near-complete genomes of two viruses were determined through sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis based on full-length capsid protein sequences classified the viruses into ANV genotype 4 (ANV4), and to the best of our knowledge this is the first report of ANV4 from India. This study revealed the presence and circulation of new strains of ANV in Indian poultry. Genetic profiling and isolation of the viruses in this study will not only aid in the development of diagnostic tools and vaccines for ANV but also offer valuable insights into its epidemiology.

Abstract
Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an important veterinary pathogen and a noteworthy threat to human and animal health. Recently, there has been a significant rise in the number of moose fatalities caused by this rare, endemic species in China. Currently, there is an increasing trend in conducting whole-genome analysis of C. perfringens strains originating from pigs and chickens, whereas fewer studies have been undertaken on Elaphurus davidianus-originating strains at the whole-genome level. Our laboratory has identified and isolated five C. perfringens type A from affected Elaphurus davidianus. The current study identified the most potent strain of C. perfringens, which originated from Elaphurus davidianus, and sequenced its genome to reveal virulence genes and pathogenicity. Our findings show that strain CX1-4 exhibits the highest levels of phospholipase activity, hemolytic activity, and mouse toxicity compared to the other four isolated C. perfringens type A strains. The chromosome sequence length of the CX1-4 strain was found to be 3,355,389 bp by complete genome sequencing. The current study unveils the genomic characteristics of C. perfringens type A originating from Elaphurus davidianus. It provides a core foundation for further investigation regarding the prevention and treatment of such infectious diseases in Elaphurus davidianus.

Abstract
The enteric chicken astrovirus (CAstV) and avian nephritis virus (ANV) are the type species of the genus Avastrovirus (AAstV; Astroviridae family), capable of causing considerable production losses in poultry. Using next-generation sequencing of a cloacal swab from a backyard chicken in Tanzania, we assembled genome sequences of ANV and CAstV (6918 nt and 7318 nt in length, respectively, excluding poly(A) tails, which have a typical AAstV genome architecture (5'-UTR-ORF1a-ORF1b-ORF2-'3-UTR). They are most similar to strains ck/ANV/BR/RS/6R/15 (82.72%) and ck/CAstV/PL/G059/14 (82.23%), respectively. Phylogenetic and sequence analyses of the genomes and the three open reading frames (ORFs) grouped the Tanzanian ANV and CAstV strains with Eurasian ANV-5 and CAstV-Aii viruses, respectively. Compared to other AAstVs, the Tanzanian strains have numerous amino acid variations (substitutions, insertions and deletions) in the spike region of the capsid protein. Furthermore, CAstV-A has a 4018 nt recombinant fragment in the ORF1a/1b genomic region, predicted to be from Eurasian CAstV-Bi and Bvi parental strains. These data should inform future epidemiological studies and options for AAstV diagnostics and vaccines.

Abstract
Avian nephritis virus (ANV) infection is associated with diarrhea, uricosis, stunting, tubulonephrosis, interstitial nephritis, and mortality of chicken flocks, leading to economic losses in the poultry industry. In this study, an ANV strain designated as HNU-ANV-ML-2020 was identified in tissue samples collected from chickens with severe enteritis on a poultry farm in Hunan province, China, and analyzed. The genome of HNU-ANV-ML-2020 is 6943 nucleotides in length. It showed the highest sequence identity (88.1%) to ANV strain CHN/GXJL815/2017 (MN732559) from Guangxi province, China, while it showed less than 86% identity to other astrovirus (AstV) genome sequences available in the GenBank database. The capsid protein of this virus showed the highest sequence identity to ANV strains HQ330482 and HQ330498 from the UK (81.2% and 81.06%, respectively), while it showed only 73.9% identity to MN732559 and less than 80% identity to the capsid proteins of other AstVs available in GenBank. Further phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that HNU-ANV-ML-2020 belongs to group 4, together with ANV strains identified in Australia, Brazil, the UK, and the Netherlands. Furthermore, ANV strains identified in chickens in China were found to be separated into four distinct groups/genotypes, indicating substantial genetic divergence and a complex circulation pattern in China. The virus characterized in the present study is a novel ANV variant identified for the first time in Hunan province, China.

Abstract
Simple Summary Enteric viruses act as etiological agents for a series of health disturbances that pose a threat to commercial chickens worldwide. The affected chickens exhibit stunted growth, low feed conversion, etc. On a global scale, research on enteric virus diversity has been performed in countries such as India, South Korea and Brazil, yet at present, there have been no conclusive reports of avian enteric viruses in China. In the present study, the virus species, infection types, clinical symptoms, and relationships among the virus species were studied in 145 positive enteric virus samples. Additionally, the evolutionary relationship and recombination of the viruses were also further studied. The results of this study can be used to define the distribution and infection type of enteric viruses in poultry, and to analyze the classification of and evolutionary relationship between certain viruses. Abstract Enteric viruses, as a potential pathogen, have been found to be vital causes of economic losses in poultry industry worldwide. The enteric viruses widely studied to date mainly include avian nephritis virus (ANV), avian reovirus (ARe), chicken astrovirus (CAstV), chicken parvovirus (ChPV), fowl adenovirus group I (FAdV-1), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and avian rotavirus (ARoV). This paper aimed to identify single and multiple infections of the seven enteric viruses using the data obtained from positive 145 enteric virus samples in poultry flocks from different areas in Hebei Province, throughout the period from 2019 to 2021. Next, the correlation between bird age and clinical signs was investigated using PCR and RT-PCR techniques. Furthermore, the whole genomes of seven parvovirus strains and open reading frame 2 (ORF2) of six CAstV strains and eight ANV strains were sequenced for phylogenetic analysis and recombination analysis, to characterize the viruses and evaluate species correlation and geographic patterns. A total of 11 profiles of virus combinations were detected; 191 viruses were detected in 145 samples; 106 single infections were reported in 73.1% of the samples; and multiple infections were detected in the remaining 26.9%. For viruses, 69% of ChPV was correlated with single infection, while ANV (61.4%) and CAstV (56.1%) were correlated with multiple infections. However, IBV and ARe were not detected in any of the samples. Recombination events were reported in parvovirus, and all CAstV sequences investigated in this paper were included within genotype Bii. The eight ANV strains pertained to different subtypes with significant differences. The above results revealed for the first time the complexity of enteric viruses over the past several years, thus contributing to disease prevention and control in the future.

Abstract
AbstractAvian nephritis virus (ANV) infections of chicken flocks cause enteric and kidney disease, uneven growth, and runting stunting syndrome, leading to economic losses in the poultry industry. In this study, one ANV strain, designated as AH202017, was isolated from a diseased broiler flock in Anhui province, China, in 2020. Virus production in LMH cell culture was confirmed by real-time RT-PCR and immunofluorescence assay. The complete genome sequencing analysis indicated that AH202017 shares 77.5%-85.5% identity with 12 reference strains in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis of the capsid protein revealed that AH202017 is more closely related to VIC-6a/Australia/2014 belonging to ANV genotype 2. However, the phylogenetic tree, based on the ORF1a protein and ORF1b protein, indicated that AH202017 manifests a close relationship with GXJL815/China/2017 belonging to genotype 8. In infection experiments, four infected chickens showed depression and one chicken died at 6 days post-infection, corresponding to 5% mortality. The virus was shed daily in the feces of infected chickens, and was found distributed in multiple organs. Macroscopic and microscopic lesions in the kidneys were observed. This is the first paper that describes the genomic characteristics and pathogenicity of a novel ANV strain in China.

Abstract
Simple Summary The poult enteritis and mortality syndrome (PEMS) causes severe economic losses in turkeys. Several agents were described to be associated with the PEMS; however, a specific etiological agent(s) has not been identified. The diagnosis of PEMS is still a huge challenge for several reasons: (1) no specific clinical signs or pathognomonic lesions, (2) isolation of some enteric viruses still difficult, (3) the pathogenicity of several enteric viruses in turkeys is not fully understood, (4) PEMS is an interaction between several known and might be unknown agents and (5) opportunistic microorganisms also have a role in the pathogenesis of PEMS. Both electron microscopy and molecular techniques can be used for diagnosis of PEMS and might help to discover unknown causes. Until now, no specific vaccines against enteric viruses associated with PEMS. However, biosecurity, maintaining a healthy gut and strengthening the immune system of turkey poults using probiotics, prebiotics and/or phytogenic substances are crucial factors to prevent and/or reduce losses of PEMS in turkeys. This review is a call for scientists to perform further research to investigate the real cause(s) of PEMS and to develop a preventive strategy against it. Although the specific causes of PEMS remains unknown, this syndrome might involve an interaction between several causative agents such as enteropathogenic viruses (coronaviruses, rotavirus, astroviruses and adenoviruses) and bacteria and protozoa. Non-infectious causes such as feed and management are also interconnected factors. However, it is difficult to determine the specific cause of enteric disorders under field conditions. Additionally, similarities of clinical signs and lesions hamper the accurate diagnosis. The purpose of the present review is to discuss in detail the main viral possible causative agents of PEMS and challenges in diagnosis and control.
