Constructed Wetlands as Sustainable Technology for the Treatment and Reuse of the First-Flush Stormwater in Agriculture—A Case Study in Sicily (Italy)

Stormwater reuse for water-sensitive city - Integrated analysis of urban hydrology for efficient alternatives of Amaravati city, India

In the present study, Amaravati, a proposed city of Andhra Pradesh, India, is identified for stormwater reuse analysis and for various efficient options for reuse. Peak runoff from the entire catchment is determined for the management of stormwater using different models such as soil and water assessment tool (SWAT), stormwater management model, and intensity-duration-frequency curves by the log Pearson Type III method. Further, the bio-retention cell low-impact development option with 60% impervious area, 60% zero depression impervious area, bio-retention cell for 40% area for each sub-catchment, and the underground stormwater network system, for part of peak runoff reduction, remaining peak runoff is considered for reuse. The remaining peak runoff is proposed to be reused for irrigation purposes (option 1), and storage retention ponds as extended detention ponds (option 2). Also, in situ storage/percolation is recommended for unaccounted stormwater within or around each premise. The findings can help to propose, implement, and maintain various stormwater reuse measures and/or practices for any city.

Use of constructed wetlands to prevent overloading of wastewater treatment plants

The fluctuation in the number of people in tourist areas affects the wastewater quality and quantity. Constructed wetlands (CWs) aim to simulate physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring in natural environments for wastewater treatment and are considered a sustainable system. The current study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of in-vessel CWs for supporting the wastewaters treatment plants in periods of overloading. Such approach can be quickly implementable, economic, and the CWs can be fast regenerated in the framework of sustainable good practices. Three pilot scale CWs were prepared in as many containers layering 10 cm of gravel, 60 cm of sand and 10 cm of gravel, and placing pieces of giant reed rhizomes in the upper layers. The bottom of each CW had a tap, and CWs were irrigated with a real municipal sewage three times a week. Before each new irrigation, the tap was opened, and the effluent collected for determining gross parameters, elemental composition, and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). CWs significantly reduced almost all gross parameters considered and half the CECs, except for a couple of metabolites of corresponding parental compounds. With regards to the potentially toxic elements, all reduced their concentration from the influents to the effluents. The results of this study were promising and highlighted good efficiency of constructed wetlands as pre-treatment of real municipal sewage to reduce the overloading of the wastewater treatment plant.

Urban stormwater management for sustainable and resilient measures and practices: a review

Stormwater drainage in urban areas has become a challenge due to the rapid and random growth of urban areas, removal of vegetation, reduction in the effectiveness of drainage infrastructure, and climate change. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), Low Impact Development (LID), Best Management Practices (BMP), Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and the Sponge City Programme (SCP) are various aspects for urban stormwater management in a few parts of the world. Urban hydrology plays a vital role in the urban stormwater management system. However, optimal results can only be possible when the combined effect of climate change, land use patterns, reuse, treatment, ecology, and societal aspects are considered. There is a need to provide sustainable and resilient urban drainage systems to manage stormwater more efficiently. The present review has thoroughly discussed various features related to urban stormwater management, highlighted key drivers, identified knowledge gaps in each of the measures and/or practices, recommended future research needs of urban stormwater management to become sustainable and resilient. Integrated modelling approaches considering various key drivers including reuse and real time governance enables stormwater management to be sustainable and resilient in urban environments.

Effects of Irrigation with Different Sources of Water on Growth, Yield and Essential Oil Compounds in Oregano

Aromatic plants can benefit from the use of treated wastewater to satisfy their water requirements, but the effects on the essential oil yield and quality need an assessment. The aims of this study were to assess the effects of freshwater and treated wastewater obtained from a Sicilian (Italy) pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland system on plant growth and yield, essential oil yield and composition of oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart) and soil characteristics. The system had a total surface area of 100 m2 and was planted with giant reed and umbrella sedge. An experimental open field of oregano was set up close to the system. Two years and two different sources of irrigation water were tested in a split-plot design for a two-factor experiment. Treated wastewater was characterized by higher values of mineral and organic constituents than freshwater. The results highlight that short-term irrigation with freshwater and treated wastewater, in both years, led to increased plant growth, dry weight and essential oil yield of oregano plants. However, it did not significantly affect the essential oil content and composition in comparison with the control. Furthermore, the year and source of irrigation water did not significantly vary the chemical composition of the soil. Our results suggest that treated wastewater can be considered an alternative to freshwater for the cultivation of oregano due to the fact that it does not greatly influence the yield quality and quantity of this species in the short-term.
