Performance and Fouling in Pre-Denitrification Membrane Bioreactors Treating High-Strength Wastewater from Food Waste Disposers

Nitrogen Removal Efficiency and Microbial Community Analysis of a High-Efficiency Honeycomb Fixed-Bed Bioreactor

Based on the concept of microbial community multi-processing in integrated spatial bacterial succession (ISBS), this study constructs a highly efficient cellular fixed-bed bioreactor that follows the growth of biological flora in the wastewater treatment process. The reactor is organically partitioned based on synergistic laws and in accordance with environmental and microbial metabolic changes, and sewage is subjected to unitized and specialized biological treatment under direct current conditions. The results show that the ISBS reactor exhibits stable nitrogen removal performance under a low-carbon source. Compared with traditional sewage biochemical treatment technology, the microbial concentration is increased by 2–3 times and even up to 12 times, and the ammonia nitrogen removal rate is maintained at 99%. The removal rate reaches 90% (hydraulic retention time of 14 h). High-throughput sequencing analysis based on 16S rDNA reveals the microbial community structure succession at different depths of the same section of the reactor. The microbial community is rich under the influence of environmental factors and exhibits different responses. The intervals vary. An analysis of the microbial community function explains why the ISBS reactor has high nitrogen removal efficiency.

An integrated anaerobic system for on-site treatment of wastewater from food waste disposer

In this study, an integrated system of siphon-driven self-agitated anaerobic reactor (SDSAR) and anaerobic fixed bed reactor (AFBR) was conducted for the treatment of wastewater from food waste disposer (FWD), and the effect of influent total solids (TS) concentration on the process performance was evaluated. When the influent TS concentration increased from 7.04 to 15.5 g/L, the methane gas production rate increased from 0.45 to 0.92 L-CH₄/L/day. However, with the influent TS concentration of food waste (FW) further increased to 23.5 g/L, a large amount of scum formed and accumulated in the SDSAR. According to the result of chemical oxygen demand (COD) recovery, the proportion of COD remained in the effluent at different TS concentrations was only around 2%. On the other hand, with an increase in TS concentration, the proportion of COD remained in the reactors increased significantly. Our results demonstrated that effluent from the integrated system can meet the water quality requirements recommended by Japan Sewage Works Association (JSWA) for wastewater from FWD. In addition, to enhance the process stability, the influent TS concentration should be maintained below 15.5 g/L.

Application of Composite Pre-Polymerized Coagulants for the Treatment of High-Strength Industrial Wastewaters

The aim of this study was the investigation of alternative pre-polymerized coagulants for the treatment of high-strength industrial wastewaters, such as those created by tanneries, or by yeast production industries. The novel inorganic composite coagulant examined in this study (as well as variations of it) was denoted as PSiFAC1.5-10-15. The contribution of a typical polyelectrolyte to improve the effectiveness of the coagulation/flocculation (C/F) process was additionally studied, either by adding it separately (i.e., as a flocculant aid) or by co-polymerizing it within the structure of inorganic coagulant (denoted as PAPEFAC1.5-10-15). It was found that the PSiFAC1.5:10:15 coagulant, either with or without the addition of polyelectrolyte, can provide better efficiency for the C/F process than the conventional coagulants. For example, the addition of 80 mg Al/L in yeast production wastewater samples resulted in a 56% reduction of COD, 40% of turbidity, and 43% of phosphates, regarding the pre-treated anaerobically wastewater samples and reduced by an extra 22%, 14%, and 38% for the pre-treated anaerobically plus aerobically wastewater samples, respectively. The residual aluminum concentration in the treated wastewaters was found to be below the legislation limit of 200 μg Al/L. The characterization of coagulants showed the relatively higher Al13 content of 51% and 43% for the cases of PSiFAC1.5-10-15 and PAPEFAC1.5-10-15, respectively, accompanied by the high zeta-potential measurements (50.5 and 39.5 mV).

Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent Using Membrane Bioreactor: Novel Processes and Their Major Drawbacks

Over the years, different types of alternative technologies have been developed and used for palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment. Specifically, membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been employed to relegate pollutants contained in POME under different operating conditions, and the technology was found to be promising. The major challenge impeding the wider application of this technology is membrane fouling, which usually attracts high operating energy and running cost. In this regard, novel methods of mitigating membrane fouling through the treatment processes have been developed. Therefore, this review article specifically focuses on the recent treatment processes of POME using MBR, with particular emphasis on innovative processes conditions such as aerobic, anaerobic, and hybrid processing as well as their performance in relation to fouling minimization. Furthermore, the effects of sonication and thermophilic and mesophilic conditions on membrane blockage were critically reviewed. The types of foulants and fouling mechanism as influenced by different operating conditions were also analyzed censoriously.
