High-Precision Colorimetric Sensing by Dynamic Tracking of Solvent Diffusion in Hollow-Sphere Photonic Crystals

Bioinspired Colorimetric Double Inverse Opal Photonic Crystal Indicators for Ethanol Concentration Sensing in Fermentation Engineering

Photonic crystal-based ethanol concentration indicators with rapid response and brilliant structural color output definitely take a place in colorimetric sensors. Here, based on the H-bond-regulated swelling of acrylate shape memory polymers (SMPs) and the solvent-induced structural color change of the double inverse opal photonic crystals (DIOPCs), new-type photonic crystals (PCs) colorimetric indicators were constructed, exhibiting a span of maximum reflection wavelength (λmax) up to ∼166 nm in response to alcohols with concentrations from 0 to 100 vol %. DIOPC indicators (DIOPCIs) show a rapid response to alcohols (<1.5 s) and output different structural colors (covering from blue to red). The colorimetric sensing mechanism includes the solvent-triggered recovery of the inverse opal skeleton, the cosolvency effect and H-bonds induced swelling/shrinkage of the polymer, the phase separation between polystyrene (PS) microsphere and polymer skeleton, and the light diffraction of DIOPCs. While ensuring a larger λmax span by regulating the H-bond interactions in polymer chains through acrylamide (AAm), AAm-modified DIOPCIs are sensitive to some specific ethanol concentrations. The real-time sensing of ethanol concentration during fermentation verified the practicability of DIOPCIs, thus establishing a visual model between structural color and corresponding fermentation kinetics. We envisage that the DIOPCIs will contribute to the intelligentization of the alcoholic fermentation and distillation industry.

Colorimetric Pressure Sensing by Plasmonic Decoupling of Silver Nanoparticles Confined within Polymeric Nanoshells

Employing a plasmonic decoupling mechanism, we report the design of a colorimetric pressure sensor that can respond to applied pressure with instant color changes. The sensor consists of a thin film of stacked uniform resorcinol-formaldehyde nanoshells with their inner surfaces functionalized with silver nanoparticles. Upon compression, the flexible polymer nanoshells expand laterally, inducing plasmonic decoupling between neighboring silver nanoparticles and a subsequent blue-shift. The initial color of the sensor is determined by the extent of plasmonic coupling, which can be controlled by tuning the interparticle distance through a seeded growth process. The sensing range can be conveniently customized by controlling the polymer shell thickness or incorporating hybrid nanoshells into various polymer matrices. The new colorimetric pressure sensors are easy to fabricate and highly versatile, allow for convenient tuning of the sensing range, and feature significant color shifts, holding great promise for a wide range of practical applications.

Smart colloidal photonic crystal sensors

Smart colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) with stimuli-responsive periodic micro/nano-structures, photonic bandgaps, and structural colors have shown unique advantages (high sensitivity, visual readout, wireless characteristics, etc.) in sensing by outputting diverse structural colors and reflection signals. In this review, smart PC sensors are summarized according to their fabrications, structures, sensing mechanisms, and applications. The fabrications of colloidal PCs are mainly by self-assembling the well-defined nanoparticles into the periodical structure (supersaturation-, polymerization-, evaporation-, shear-, interaction-, and field-induced self-assembly process). Their structures can be divided into two groups: closely packed and non-closely packed nano-structures. The sensing mechanisms can be explained by Bragg's law, including the change in the effective refractive index, lattice constant, and the order degree. The sensing applications are detailly introduced according to the analytes of the target, including solvents, vapors, humidity, mechanical force, temperature, electrical field, magnetic field, pH, ions/molecules, and so on. Finally, the corresponding challenges and the future potential prospects of artificial smart colloidal PCs in the sensing field are discussed.

Hollow mesoporous cubic silica self-assembling into photonic crystals with rhombohedral lattices and vivid structural colors for anti-counterfeiting

Colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) feature face-centered cubic (FCC) lattices since spherical particles are usually used as building blocks; however, constructing structural colors originating from PCs with non-FCC lattices is still a big challenge due to the difficulty in preparing non-spherical particles with tunable morphologies, sizes, uniformity, and surface properties and assembling them into ordered structures. Here, uniform, positively charged, and hollow mesoporous cubic silica particles (hmc-SiO2) with tunable sizes and shell thicknesses prepared by a template approach are used to self-assemble into PCs with rhombohedral lattice. The reflection wavelengths and structural colors of the PCs can be controlled by altering the sizes or the shell thicknesses of the hmc-SiO2. Additionally, photoluminescent PCs have been fabricated by taking the advantage of the click chemistry between amino silane and isothiocyanate of a commercial dye. The PC pattern achieved by a hand-writing way with the solution of the photoluminescent hmc-SiO2 instantly and reversibly shows the structural color under visible light but a different photoluminescent color under UV illumination, which is useful for anticounterfeiting and information encryption. The non-FCC structured and photoluminescent PCs will upgrade the basic understanding of the structural colors and facilitate their applications in optical devices, anti-counterfeiting, and so forth.

Non-gelated polymeric photonic crystal films

A rapid curing method for the preparation of colloidal photonic crystal films is presented. Firstly, a colloidal crystal array template was prepared by self-assembly of nanospheres, and then a dilute polymer solution was poured into the gap of the template. Then the composite photonic film was obtained as the polymer solution was cured. Such films have good properties in mechanical strength, anti pH interference, rapid solvent response and are easy to preserve. The films show good linear response to ethanol aqueous solutions of different concentrations, and the response equilibrium takes less than 20 s. The films also show long-term stability and reusability, and further functionalization can make the films multi-sensitive.
