Caregiving Ability of Mothers of Children With Cancer: Qualitative Content Analysis

BACKGROUND

Childhood cancer confronts the child and the parents with considerable degrees of stress. Because caring for the child is mainly the role of the mother in most families, her ability to take care of the affected child is very important.

OBJECTIVE

To explore the caregiving ability of Iranian mothers who have children diagnosed with cancer.

METHODS

In this present study, which was conducted using the Directed Qualitative Content Analysis Method, 11 parents having children diagnosed with cancer and 5 professional caregivers working at the Department of Hematology and Oncology of Mofid Children Hospital in Tehran, Iran, were selected using purposeful sampling method. Data were collected through semistructured interviews. Data analysis was performed simultaneously with data collection using the Directed Content Analysis Approach.

RESULTS

Five main categories emerged, namely, care exhaustion, care confusion, spiritual conflict, care competence, and care preparedness that represent the beneficiaries' perception of the caring ability of Iranian mothers of cancer-afflicted children.

CONCLUSION

Study results revealed that the caregiving capacity of mothers nurturing cancer-stricken children can be evaluated across 5 domains, encompassing a spectrum of maternal requirements in child care. Improving these domains can elevate maternal caregiving proficiency, fostering self-care and enhancing care for the ailing child.

IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE

A program can be developed based on the findings of the present study, in order to improve the caring ability of mothers of cancer-afflicted children, which results in improving the mother's care for her cancer-afflicted child.

Mothers' efforts to overcome difficult twists and turns in living with children with cancer: a phenomenological study

BACKGROUND

Child cancer impacts the entire family. However, those who identify as mothers may be most negatively affected due to the societal expectations placed upon them in primary caregiving. This study was conducted with the aim of exploring the lived experiences of mothers of children with cancer and their adaptation to their child's illness.

METHODS

This study employed a qualitative and hermeneutic approach using Heideggerian phenomenology as a philosophical framework. Our sampling strategy was purposive. Mothers (n = 14) of children diagnosed with cancer participated in face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The seven-steps of critical hermeneutic analysis were used to summarize and interpret findings.

RESULTS

Analysis revealed that participants' adaptation to their child's illness occurs through comprehensive support and the utilization of empowering beliefs. The theme of comprehensive support included sub-themes of seeking informational support, seeking psychological support, and seeking social support. The theme of utilizing empowering beliefs encompassed sub-themes of resilience against cultural misconceptions and reliance on spiritual beliefs. Furthermore, one constitutive pattern 'mothers' efforts to overcome difficult twists and turns in living with children with cancer' was identified.This related to participants' striving to navigate the twists and turns of life's hardships.

CONCLUSIONS

Relationships and social context are vital and important features of this phenomena. Employing a team approach to provide comprehensive support to mothers of children with cancer involving physicians, nurses, and psychologists can be supportive in their adaptation to their child's cancer. Additionally, reductions in cultural taboos surrounding cancer could facilitate improved adaptation to childhood cancer for these mothers.

Spiritual Coping Among Families of Children With Cancer: A Qualitative Study

The impact of a childhood cancer diagnosis precipitates caregiver's engagement in spiritual coping. This study aimed to explore spirituality among Malaysian Muslim caregivers of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A total of 13 eligible caregivers participated in this qualitative semi-structured interview via purposive sampling. Each interview was audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using NVivo 12 via thematic analysis. Three main themes revolved around hope through the act of praying and recitation (du'ā' and dhikr), acceptance of God's will (redha), and faith toward God as the Provider of sustenance (rezeki). The findings of this study contribute to a holistic supportive care system in pediatric oncology as it informs health care providers the role of spirituality in mitigating the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis and promoting psychological adaptation. As a multicultural country, future studies may explore spirituality in other cultures and religion in the country.
