Predictors of Depression in Elderly According to Gender during COVID-19: Using the Data of 2020 Community Health Survey

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to examine factors influencing depression according to gender in people during COVID-19.

METHODS

This study was conducted on 61,147 elderly individuals over the age of 65 who participated in the 2020 Community Health Survey (CHS). Data analysis was conducted using SAS 9.4.

RESULTS

Elderly females had a higher perceived fear of COVID-19 than males. The common factors affecting depression in elderly individuals were age, monthly income, economic activity, stress, subjective health status, and social support. Among elderly women, changes in residential areas and daily life due to COVID-19 were identified as factors affecting depression.

CONCLUSIONS

Therefore, during COVID-19, it was necessary to provide customized depression relief programs for the elderly, and it was necessary to find ways for them to positively perceive their health status and increase healthcare efficacy. In the future, it is necessary to pay attention to elderly women living in rural areas and make efforts to ensure that their daily lives are not interrupted by infectious diseases.

Family functions, social support and quality of life among elderly during pandemic COVID-19

This study aims to determine the relationship between family function, social support, and the quality of life of the elderly in Kebumen District. Commonly elderly face weakness, limitation, and disability issues so that their quality of life decreases. Families have an important role to improve the quality of life of the elderly. This study used a cross-sectional design involving 468 elderly determined by a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis used univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. The bivariate analysis used simple logistic regression analysis and if the value of the bivariate analysis was < 0.25, then it would be continued with the multivariate analysis. The multivariate analysis used multiple logistic regression with Adjusted OR and 95% CI with a significant level of 0.05. : there is a significant relationship between family function and social support and the quality of life of the elderly with a p-value of 0.001 with 95% CI (2.35-4.19) and a p-value of 0.001 with 95% CI (3.33 – 6.02) respectively. Family function and social support are factors reducing the morbidity and mortality rates which finally can improve the quality of life of the elderly.

Factors Associated for Mortality of Older People With COVID 19: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Background

Whilst people of all ages are affected in some way by COVID-19 virus, older people are at a high mortality risk. This study aimed to systematically review the numerous factors associated with mortality among COVID-19 infected older people.

Method

PubMed and Science Direct were searched from inception to the April 15, 2021. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement and Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool to assess the methodological quality of the included studies.

Results

Of the 4957 studies identified, 20 were included in the qualitative analysis, while 10 were included in the quantitative analysis. Male sex (OR = 2.22, 95% CI = 1.23-3.99), age (over 75 years old) (OR = 3.36, 95% CI = 2.30-4.90), Dementia (OR = 3.69, 95% CI = 1.99-6.83) and Dyspnoea (OR = 3.16, 95% CI = 2.61-3.82), were found to be significantly associated with mortality. There is no significant association between Diabetes, or Hypertension.

Conclusion

Older age, male gender, dyspnoea and dementia were associated with a greater risk of death of older people from COVID-19 infection. These findings may help health care professionals to identify high-risk groups, facilitate appropriate remedial measures, and control mortality among older people.
