Abstract
BACKGROUND Both autonomic dysfunction and frailty are common and complex geriatric syndromes with similar negative health outcomes. Both conditions are characterized by a loss of homeostasis that makes individuals more vulnerable to stressors. AIM The primary aim of this study is to examine the association between drugs that affect autonomic function and frailty onset in community-dwelling octogenarians. The secondary aim is to investigate the relationship between autonomic dysfunction and frailty onset in this population. METHODS In total, 372 nonfrail adults aged 80 years and above (mean age 83 ± 3 years) from the BUTTERFLY project were prospectively followed for 2 years (mean follow-up of 22 ± 6 months). The association between autonomic dysfunction (defined as neurogenic orthostatic hypotension and symptoms of orthostatic hypotension), the use of medications affecting autonomic function, and frailty status were examined using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The completely adjusted binary logistic regression model showed that the use of drugs affecting autonomic function was associated with frailty {adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.78 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06-3.00], p = 0.030}. Furthermore, symptoms of orthostatic hypotension were related to frailty (aOR = 2.98 [95% CI 1.13-7.88], p = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS Our results show that symptoms of orthostatic hypotension and the use of drugs that affect autonomic function are accompanied with respectively 3-fold and 1.8-fold higher odds of frailty onset in persons aged 80 years and over. Therefore, pharmacological treatment that affects autonomic function should be started with caution and timely discontinued in older persons.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess cardiorespiratory coupling (CRC) in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (T2DM) and apparently healthy individuals, in order to test the hypothesis that this method can provide additional knowledge to the information obtained through the heart rate variability (HRV). A cross-sectional study was conducted in T2DM patients(T2DMG=32) and health controls (CON=32). For CRC analysis, the electrocardiogram, arterial pressure, and thoracic respiratory movement were recorded at rest in supine position and during active standing. Beat-to-beat series of heart period and systolic arterial pressure were analyzed with the respiratory movement signal via a traditional non-causal approach, such as squared coherence function. In this sample of T2DM, no differences in HRV were observed when compared to the CON, but the T2DMG showed a reduction in resting CRC. We conclude that in CRC in T2DM, reflected by the squared coherence may already be compromised even before HRV changes.

Abstract
AIMS To determine whether there is an association between high blood glucose levels and having autonomic symptoms among adults aged 30-69 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The presence of autonomic symptoms was defined as the positive response to any item of the Survey of Autonomic Symptoms (SAS). Blood glucose levels were defined as euglycemia, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes (T2D), based on oral glucose tolerance test. Poisson regression, with link log and robust variance, and linear regression were conducted to evaluate the association of interest. RESULTS A total of 1607 subjects, mean age 48.2 (SD: 10.6) and 810 (49.7 %) women, were included. T2D was associated with higher prevalence of erectile dysfunction (PR = 3.00; 95 % CI: 1.78-5.02) and dryness of mouth and eyes (PR = 1.29; 95 % CI: 1.02-1.61) compared with those with euglycemia. Those with T2D had 0.32 (95 % CI: 0.04-0.62) and 1.03 (95 % CI: 0.03-2.03) more points in the SAS score and severity scale, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Erectile dysfunction and dry mouth and eyes are the more common autonomic symptoms associated with T2D. Our results suggest a periodic evaluation of sexual function and eye humidity among T2D patients.
