[Progress in the application of novel nano-materials to the safety analysis of agricultural products]

The quality and safety of agricultural products are strongly related to human livelihood. Thus, the government and consumers have recently paid increased attention to the quality and safety of agricultural products. The development of efficient, rapid, and sensitive analytical methods for detecting pesticides, veterinary drugs, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and environmental pollutants in agricultural products is of great significance. Owing to the complexity of many sample matrices and the low concentration of pollutants in a typical sample, appropriate sample pretreatment steps are necessary to enrich pollutants in agricultural products. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is the most widely used sample pretreatment technology; in this technique, the adsorbent generally determines the selectivity and efficiency of the extraction process. An increasing number of novel materials have been used as SPE adsorbents. The extraction efficiency, extraction selectivity, and analytical throughput of SPE could be greatly improved by combining these novel materials with various extraction modes (e. g., solid-phase microextraction, dispersed SPE, and magnetic SPE (MSPE)) during sample preparation. Because of their large specific surface area and high affinity toward target analytes, nanomaterials are often used as SPE adsorbents, thereby greatly improving the selectivity and sensitivity of the analytical technology. More importantly, these materials have become a priority area of research on preconcentration technologies for trace compounds in agricultural products. This paper summarizes the adsorption characteristics of several new nanomaterials, including magnetic materials, carbon-based materials, metal nanomaterials (MNs), metal oxide nanomaterials (MONs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These nanomaterials present numerous advantages, such as large specific surface areas, high adsorption capacities, and tailorable structural designs. MSPE employs magnetic materials as sorbents to afford fast dispersion and efficient recycling when applied to complex sample matrices under an external magnetic field. The use of MSPE can avoid several typical problems associated with SPE such as poor adsorbent packing and high pressure, thereby greatly simplifying the pretreatment process and providing a high flux for sample analysis. Carbon-based materials are powdered or bulk nonmetallic solid materials with carbon as the main component; carbon and nitrogen materials, mesoporous carbon, carbon nanotubes, and graphene are some examples of these materials. These materials provide large specific surface areas, abundant pore structures, good thermal stability, high mechanical strength and adsorption capacity, and controllable morphology. Pure and modified carbon nanomaterials have been successfully used to purify target analytes from agricultural products. Given their unique physical and chemical properties, MNs and MONs have attracted significant interest for use in sample preparation. MNs and MONs with excellent thermal and mechanical stabilities show good resistance to a wide pH range and diverse organic solvents, which is crucial in adsorbent-based extraction methods. The surface of these materials can be easily modified with various ligands to improve their selectivity. MOFs and COFs present many advantages such as large specific surface areas, high porosity, adjustable pore performance, and good thermal stability. Several methods that employ novel adsorbent materials to analyze pollutants in a variety of agricultural products, such as chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and other detection technologies, have been established. This paper also reviews the application of adsorbent materials in the analysis of agricultural product quality and safety, and discusses the future development trends of these sorbents in sample preparation for the safety analysis of agricultural products.

[Recent advances in the development and application of effervescence-assisted microextraction techniques]

Effervescence-assisted microextraction (EAM) is a novel sample pretreatment method based on the reaction of CO2 and H+ donors to generate CO2 bubbles and promote rapid dispersion of the extractant. During this process, the unique dispersion method increases the contact area between the target molecule and the extraction solvent, and the adsorption/extraction efficiency of the adsorbent/extractant toward the target molecule is also enhanced. The EAM technique is of particular interest due its convenient application, low running costs, reduced solvent consumption, high extraction efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Benefiting from the rapid development of extractants, the evolution and application of the EAM technology is becoming more tuned and diversified. Indeed, the synthesis of new extractants, such as nanomaterials with multi-pore structures, large specific surface areas, and rich active sites, has attracted extensive attention, as has the development of ionic liquids with strong extraction abilities and high selectivities. As a result, the EAM technology has been widely applied to the pretreatment of target compounds in various samples, such as food, plant, biological, and environmental samples. However, since these samples often contain polysaccharides, peptides, proteins, inorganic salts, and other interfering substrates, it is necessary to remove some of these substances prior to extraction by EAM. This is commonly achieved using methods such as vortexing, centrifugation, and dilution, among others. The treated samples can then be extracted using the EAM method prior to detection using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) to detect substances such as heavy metal ions, pesticide residues, endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), and antibiotics. Using effervescence as a novel assisted method for the dispersion of solvents or adsorbents, the concentrations of Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, bisphenol, estrogen, and the pyrethyl pesticides have previously been successfully determined. Moreover, many influencing factors have been evaluated during method development, including the composition of the effervescent tablet, the solution pH, the extraction temperature, the type and mass/volume of extractant, the type of eluent, the eluent concentration, the elution time, and the regeneration performance. Generally, the cumbersome single factor optimization and multi-factor optimization methods are also required to determine the optimal experimental conditions. Following determination of the optimal experimental conditions, the EAM method was validated by a series of experimental parameters including the linear range, the correlation coefficient (R2), the enrichment factor (EF), the limit of detection (LOD), and the limit of quantification (LOQ). In addition, the use of this method has been demonstrated in actual sample testing, and the obtained results have compared with those achieved using similar detection systems and methods to ultimately determine the accuracy, feasibility, and superiority of the developed method. In this paper, the construction of an EAM method based on nanomaterials, ionic liquids, and other emerging extractants is reviewed, wherein the preparation method, application range, and comparison of similar extractants were evaluated for the same extraction system. In addition, the current state-of-the-art in relation to EAM research and application when combined with HPLC, cold flame AAS, and other analytical techniques is summarized in terms of the detection of harmful substances in complex matrices. More specifically, the samples evaluated herein include dairy products, honey, beverages, surface water, vegetables, blood, urine, liver, and complex botanicals. Furthermore, issues related to the application of this technology are analyzed, and its future development trend in the field of microextraction is forecasted. Finally, the application prospects of EAM in the analysis of various pollutants and components are proposed to provide reference for monitoring pollutants in food, environmental, and biological samples.

Room temperature fabrication of magnetic covalent organic frameworks for efficient enrichment of parabens in water

A novel 4 + 2 covalent magnetic organic framework (COF) with core-shell structure was synthesized for the first time with N, N, N', N'-Tetrakis (4-aminophenyl)-1, 4- benzenediamine (TPDA) and 2, 6-Pyridinedicarboxaldehyde (PCBA) at room temperature. The synthesized magnetic TPDA-PCBA-COF has a large specific surface area and superparamagnetism, which makes it an ideal sorbent for trace analytes enrichment. To this end, we combined it with magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) to enrich trace parabens in environmental water. The parameters affecting the enrichment efficiency of magnetic solid phase extraction, such as the amount of Fe₃O₄@TPDA-PCBA-COF, extraction time, pH of samples, salt concentration, desorption solvent volume and desorption time, were optimized. A simple method for extraction and determination of parabens in water samples by MSPE combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was established under optimized conditions. The validation results revealed that the linear ranges were at 1.0-5.0 × 10² ng mL^-1 with R value between 0.9915 and 0.9999, the spiked recoveries were in the range of 82.8% to 99.9% and RSDs were lower than 10%. The method was further applied to the determination of parabens in water samples, with recoveries in the range of 82.2% to 110.0% and RSDs ≤ 7.7%. These results suggest that the magnetic TPDA-PCBA-COF could be used as a promising adsorbent for efficient extraction and quantitation of parabens in environmental water samples.

[Preparation of sulfonic acid-functionalized polymeric ionic liquid-based magnetic adsorbent and its applications to diquat extraction]

In terms of the structure of polar pollutants, the design and development of new materials that can interact with target analytes is vital for effective extraction. Diquat is a broad-spectrum herbicide with strong toxicity. It is sprayed during the growing process of vegetables because of its high efficiency and low cost. Furthermore, diquat is a polar and basic cationic organic compound. Therefore, it is necessary to develop adsorbents that can form strong interaction with diquat to extract it from complex vegetable samples. In this study, sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid, 1-vinyl-3-propyl(3'-sulfonate) imidazolium chloride ([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl]), was synthesized through the reaction of 1-vinylimidazole and 1,3-propanesultone and characterized using nuclear magnetic-resonance spectroscopy. The resulting [VPImi-SO₃H][Cl] was then immobilized on the surface of vinyl-modified magnetic silica to obtain poly-(1-vinyl-3-propyl(3'-sulfonate) imidazolium chloride)-modified magnetic nanoparticles (Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP) via free radical polymerization between vinyl groups. The structure, morphology and magnetism of the obtained Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, vibrating sample magnetometer, and thermogravimetric analysis. The characterization results indicated that the Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP was synthesized with strong magnetic properties. Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP as magnetic adsorbent exhibited a different pH response to anion and cation. With the increase in solution pH, the adsorption efficiency of Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP for anionic dye amaranth decreased; whereas, the adsorption efficiency for cationic dye, methylene blue, increased. Under a high pH condition, sulfonic acid groups on the surface of Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP existed in the form of -SO3-. Thus, the adsorption efficiency of Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP for methylene blue could reach 95.2% due to the strong electrostatic attraction between adsorbent and positively charged methylene blue; whereas, negatively charged amaranth could hardly be adsorbed due to the electrostatic repulsion between adsorbent and amaranth. The above results showed sulfonic acid modification endowed Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP with abundant negative charges at certain pH conditions. Thus, the extraction can be achieved by the strong electrostatic attraction between negatively charged Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP and positively charged diquat. Using green vegetables as the sample matrix and magnetic solid-phase extraction as extraction model, the extraction performance of Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP for diquat was studied. Some extraction parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, such as solution pH, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, desorption solvent and its volume, and desorption time were optimized using the single factor experiment method. Under the optimized extraction conditions (30 mg of adsorbent, 15 min of adsorption time, 40 μL of ammonia, 600 μL of acetonitrile-formic acid (9∶1, v/v) as desorption solvent, 1 min of desorption time), the performance, and applicability of the proposed method were investigated by combining magnetic solid-phase extraction, high performance liquid chromatography, and UV-visible detector. Good linearity was observed at contents ranging from 0.2 to 20 μg/g with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9981. The limit of detection and limit of quantification based on the signal-to-noise ratio of 3∶1 and 10∶1 were 0.09 and 0.2 μg/g, respectively. The spiked recoveries at three levels of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 μg/g were obtained in the range of 82.7%-97.5% with the relative standard deviations of 2.8%-5.0% (n=3). The results showed that the sulfonic acid-functionalized Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP could be employed as a magnetic adsorbent for the quick and effective extraction of diquat, and the proposed method could be used for the determination of diquat from green vegetable samples. It could be anticipated that Poly([VPImi-SO₃H][Cl])-MP could be used as an adsorbent for extracting other cationic polar pollutants by adjusting the solution pH. This work provides a new way to construct adsorbents for extracting polar pollutants.

[Application progress of covalent organic framework materials in extraction of toxic and harmful substances]

Toxic and hazardous substances constitute a category of compounds that are potentially hazardous to humans, other organisms, and the environment. These substances include pesticides (benzoylureas, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids), persistent organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluorinated compounds), plasticizers (phthalate esters, phenolic endocrine disruptors), medicines (sulfonamides, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, tetracyclines, fluoroquinone antibiotics), heterocyclic aromatic amines, algal toxins, and radioactive substances. Discharge of these toxic and harmful substances, as well as their possible persistence and bioaccumulation, pose a major risk to human health, often to the extent of being life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to analyze and detect toxic and hazardous substances in the environment, drinking water, food, and daily commodities. Sample pretreatment is an imperative step in most of the currently used analytical methods, especially in the analysis of trace toxic and harmful substances in complex samples. An efficient and fast sample pretreatment technology not only helps improve the sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and accuracy of analytical methods, but also avoids contamination of the analytical instruments and even damages the performance and working life of instruments. Sample pretreatment techniques widely used in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances include solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and dispersed solid-phase extraction (DSPE). The adsorbent material plays a key role in these pretreatment techniques, thereby determining their selectivity and efficiency. In recent years, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted increasing attention in sample pretreatment. COFs represent an exciting new class of porous crystalline materials constructed via the strong covalent bonding of organic building units through a reversible condensation reaction. COFs present four advantages: (1) precise control over structure type and pore size by consideration of the target molecular structure based on the connectivity and shape of the building units; (2) post-synthetic modification for chemical optimization of the pore interior toward optimized interaction with the target; (3) straightforward scalable synthesis; (4) feasible formation of composites with magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, silica, etc., which is beneficial to enhance the performance of COFs and meet the requirement of diverse pretreatment technologies. Because of the well-defined crystalline porous structures and tailored functionalities, COFs have excellent potential for use in target extraction. However, some issues need to be addressed for the application of COFs in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances. (1) For the sample matrix, most of the reported COFs are highly hydrophobic, which limits their dispersibility in water-based samples, leading to poor extraction performance. COFs with good dispersibility in water-based samples are urgently required. (2) Besides, COFs rely on hydrophobic interaction, size repulsion, π-π stacking, and Van der Waals forces to extract target substances, but they are not effective for some polar targets. Thus, it is necessary to develop COFs with high affinity for polar toxic and hazardous substances. (3) Methods for the synthesis of COFs have evolved from solvothermal methods to room-temperature methods, mechanical grinding, microwave-assisted synthesis, ion thermal methods, etc. Most of the existing methods are time-consuming, laborious, and environmentally unfriendly. The starting materials are too expensive to prepare COFs in large quantities. More effort is required to improve the synthesis efficiency and overcome the obstacles in the application of COFs for extraction. This article summarizes and reviews the research progress in COFs toward the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances in recent years. Finally, the application prospects of COFs in this field are summarized, which serves as a reference for further research into pretreatment technologies based on COFs.
