Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The traditional Chinese herb Panax notoginseng (PN) tonifies blood, and its main active ingredient is saponin. PN is processed by different methods, resulting in different compositions and effects. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate changes in the microstructure and composition of fresh PN processed by different techniques and the anti-anemia effects on tumor-bearing BALB/c mice after chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide (CTX). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fresh PN was processed by hot-air drying (raw PN, RPN), steamed at 120 °C for 5 h (steamed PN, SPN), or fried at 130 °C, 160 °C, or 200 °C for 8 min (fried PN, FPN1, FPN2, or FPN3, respectively); then, the microstructures were compared with 3D optical microscopy, quasi-targeted metabolites were detected by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC‒MS/MS), and saponins were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). An anemic mouse model was established by subcutaneous H22 cell injection and treatment with CTX. The antianemia effects of PN after processing via three methods were investigated by measuring peripheral blood parameters, performing HE staining and measuring cell proliferation via immunofluorescence. RESULTS 3D optical profiling revealed that the surface roughness of the SPN and FPN was greater than that of the other materials. Quasi-targeted metabolomics revealed that SPN and FPN had more differentially abundant metabolites whose abundance increased, while SPN had greater amounts of terpenoids and flavones. Analysis of the composition and content of the targeted saponins revealed that the contents of rare saponins (ginsenoside Rh1, 20(S)-Rg3, 20(R)-Rg3, Rh4, Rk3, Rg5) were greater in the SPN. In animal experiments, the RBC, WBC, HGB and HCT levels in peripheral blood were increased by SPN and FPN. HE staining and immunofluorescence showed that H-SPN and M-FPN promoted bone marrow and spleen cell proliferation. CONCLUSION The microstructure and components of fresh PN differed after processing via different methods. SPN and FPN ameliorated CTX-induced anemia in mice, but the effects of PN processed by these two methods did not differ.

Abstract
Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a type of large-vessel vasculitis that predominantly affects young females. The precise pathomechanism of TAK is still under investigation. In TAK, the vasa vasorum is considered to be the initial inflammatory site. Disruption of the vasa vasorum induces the entry of inflammatory cells into the vascular wall of large vessels between the media and adventitia, and infiltrated cells damage the vascular components, eventually leading to stenosis or dilatation of the affected arteries. In addition, T cells are considered key players in TAK, and myeloid cells function as effector cells. Although the roles of B cells in TAK are poorly understood, recent evidence supports their contribution to the pathogenicity of TAK. Particularly, two autoantibodies have been identified in TAK through investigation of anti-endothelial cell antibodies, and they could be involved in the maintenance of vascular inflammation. Furthermore, one of the autoantibodies, anti-endothelial protein C receptor, was shown to be present in ulcerative colitis (UC), which is genetically and clinically associated with TAK. Similar autoantibodies in inflammatory diseases with different target organs indicate a common underlying pathophysiology of these diseases, which could be characterized by the aberrant activation of B cells. This review discusses recent understanding of the pathomechanisms of TAK and UC, with a focus on the involvement of B cells and autoantibodies. The close association of UC with TAK further suggests a common etiology, and the importance of the intestinal microbiota, including dysbiosis, is also becoming known in TAK. Investigation of such common factors among TAK and UC would improve understanding of the interplay between gut and vascular inflammation, which is a new concept for developing vascular inflammation through the gut-vessel connection.

Abstract
Severe enteritis is a rare side effect of cyclophosphamide (CPA) therapy, and only two cases have been reported to date. We herein report a 60-year-old man who developed severe enteritis after intravenous CPA administration for microscopic polyangiitis. He was successfully treated by discontinuation of CPA administration and long-term intensive supportive care. A diagnosis of CPA-associated enteritis was made based on the clinical course and imaging and pathological findings. This review of three cases of CPA-related enteritis, including our case, suggests that prompt CPA discontinuation and intensive systemic management are necessary when patients have gastrointestinal symptoms after CPA administration.
