Dye-doped spheres with plasmonic semi-shells: Lasing modes and scattering at realistic gain levels

Optical modulation based on tunable light absorption and amplification in metasurfaces coupled with gain medium

While previous tunable metasurfaces were based mainly on tuning of dielectric permittivity or losses in associated tunable elements, here we propose gain-assisted tunable metasurfaces as optical modulators with high ON-OFF ratio. They consist of a dye-doped film placed within metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavities. Plasmonic modes with enhanced electric field significantly enhance both absorption and emission of light by dye molecules. As a result, it is possible to achieve the perfect absorption in MIM cavities with zero reflection, as well as to compensate losses thus achieving unit reflection. As a result, the achievable ON/OFF ratio is more than 100.

Mode Modification of Plasmonic Gap Resonances Induced by Strong Coupling with Molecular Excitons

Plasmonic cavities can be used to control the atom-photon coupling process at the nanoscale, since they provide an ultrahigh density of optical states in an exceptionally small mode volume. Here we demonstrate strong coupling between molecular excitons and plasmonic resonances (so-called plexcitonic coupling) in a film-coupled nanocube cavity, which can induce profound and significant spectral and spatial modifications to the plasmonic gap modes. Within the spectral span of a single gap mode in the nanocube-film cavity with a 3 nm wide gap, the introduction of narrow-band J-aggregate dye molecules not only enables an anticrossing behavior in the spectral response but also splits the single spatial mode into two distinct modes that are easily identified by their far-field scattering profiles. Simulation results confirm the experimental findings, and the sensitivity of the plexcitonic coupling is explored using digital control of the gap spacing. Our work opens up a new perspective to study the strong coupling process, greatly extending the functionality of nanophotonic systems, with the potential to be applied in cavity quantum electrodynamic systems.

Multipolar, time-dynamical model for the loss compensation and lasing of a spherical plasmonic nanoparticle spaser immersed in an active gain medium

The plasmonic response of a metal nanoparticle in the presence of surrounding gain elements is studied, using a space and time-dependent model, which integrates a quantum formalism to describe the gain and a classical treatment for the metal. Our model fully takes into account the influence of the system geometry (nanosphere) and offers for the first time, the possibility to describe the temporal evolution of the fields and the coupling among the multipolar modes of the particle. We calculate the lasing threshold value for all multipoles of the spaser, and demonstrate that the dipolar one is lowest. The onset of the lasing instability, in the linear regime, is then studied both with and without external field forcing. We also study the behaviour of the system below the lasing threshold, with the external field, demonstrating the existence of an amplification regime where the nanoparticle’s plasmon is strongly enhanced as the threshold is approached. Finally, a qualitative discussion is provided on later, non-linear stages of the dynamics and the approach to the steady-state of the spaser; in particular, it is shown that, for the considered geometry, the spasing is necessarily multi-modal and multipolar modes are always activated.

Minimal spaser threshold within electrodynamic framework: Shape, size and modes

It is known (yet often ignored) from quantum mechanical or energetic considerations, that the threshold gain of the quasi-static spaser depends only on the dielectric functions of the metal and the gain material. Here, we derive this result from the purely classical electromagnetic scattering framework. This is of great importance, because electrodynamic modelling is far simpler than quantum mechanical one. The influence of the material dispersion and spaser geometry are clearly separated; the latter influences the threshold gain only indirectly, defining the resonant wavelength. We show that the threshold gain has a minimum as a function of wavelength. A variation of nanoparticle shape, composition, or spasing mode may shift the plasmonic resonance to this optimal wavelength, but it cannot overcome the material-imposed minimal gain. Furthermore, retardation is included straightforwardly into our framework; and the global spectral gain minimum persists beyond the quasi-static limit. We illustrate this with two examples of widely used geometries: Silver spheroids and spherical shells embedded in and filled with gain materials.
