Photothermal effect of gold nanostar patterns inkjet-printed on coated paper substrates with different permeability

Light-Induced Clusterization of Gold Nanoparticles: A New Photo-Triggered Antibacterial against E. coli Proliferation

Metallic nanoparticles show plasmon resonance phenomena when irradiated with electromagnetic radiation of a suitable wavelength, whose value depends on their composition, size, and shape. The damping of the surface electron oscillation causes a release of heat, which causes a large increase in local temperature. Furthermore, this increase is enhanced when nanoparticle aggregation phenomena occur. Local temperature increase is extensively exploited in photothermal therapy, where light is used to induce cellular damage. To activate the plasmon in the visible range, we synthesized 50 nm diameter spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNP) coated with polyethylene glycol and administered them to an E. coli culture. The experiments were carried out, at different gold nanoparticle concentrations, in the dark and under irradiation. In both cases, the nanoparticles penetrated the bacterial wall, but a different toxic effect was observed; while in the dark we observed an inhibition of bacterial growth of 46%, at the same concentration, under irradiation, we observed a bactericidal effect (99% growth inhibition). Photothermal measurements and SEM observations allowed us to conclude that the extraordinary effect is due to the formation, at low concentrations, of a light-induced cluster of gold nanoparticles, which does not form in the absence of bacteria, leading us to the conclusion that the bacterium wall catalyzes the formation of these clusters which are ultimately responsible for the significant increase in the measured temperature and cause of the bactericidal effect. This photothermal effect is achieved by low-power irradiation and only in the presence of the pathogen: in its absence, the lack of gold nanoparticles clustering does not lead to any phototoxic effect. Therefore, it may represent a proof of concept of an innovative nanoscale pathogen responsive system against bacterial infections.

Gold nanostars-diagnosis, bioimaging and biomedical applications

Gold Nanostars (GNS) have attracted tremendous attention toward themselves owing to their multi-branched structure and unique properties. These state of the art metallic nanoparticles possess intrinsic features like remarkable optical properties and exceptional physiochemical activities. These star-shaped gold nanoparticles can predominantly be utilized in biosensing, photothermal therapy, imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and target drug delivery applications due to their low toxicity and extraordinary optical features. In the current review, recent approaches in the matter of GNS in case of diagnosis, bioimaging and biomedical applications were summarized and reported. In this regard, first an overview about the structure and general properties of GNS were reported and thence detailed information regarding the diagnostic, bioimaging, photothermal therapy, and drug delivery applications of such novel nanomaterials were presented in detail. Summarized information clearly highlighting the superior capability of GNS as potential multi-functional materials for biomedical applications.

Fabrication of photothermally active poly(vinyl alcohol) films with gold nanostars for antibacterial applications

The unique photothermal properties of non-spherical gold nanoparticles under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation find broad application in nanotechnology and nanomedicine. The combination of their plasmonic features with widely used biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films can lead to novel hybrid polymeric materials with tunable photothermal properties and a wide range of applications. In this study, thin PVA films containing highly photothermally efficient gold nanostars (GNSs) were fabricated and their properties were studied. The resulting films displayed good mechanical properties and a pronounced photothermal effect under NIR irradiation. The local photothermal effect triggered by NIR irradiation of the PVA-GNS films is highly efficient at killing bacteria, therefore providing an opportunity to develop new types of protective antibacterial films and coatings.

A green and facile preparation approach, licochalcone A capped on hollow gold nanoparticles, for improving the solubility and dissolution of anticancer natural product

This study described a valuable drug delivery system for poorly water-soluble anticancer naturalproduct, licochalcone A, isolated from Glycyrrhiza inflata, loaded on hollow gold nanoparticles by green method to improve solubility and dissolution and maintain its natural pharmacological property. Briefly, the formation of hollow gold nanoparticles involves three steps: preparing of silica nanospheres by Stober method, forming of a thick gold shell around the silica templates and etching of silica particles by HF solution. Hollow gold nanoparticles (HGNPs) and drug loaded hollow gold nanoparticles (L-HGNPs) displayed spherical structure and approximately 200nm in size observed by SEM, XRD, EDS and DSC analysis showed that HGNPs were gold hollow structure and crystalline form. The solubility in aqueous solution of licochalcone A was increased obviously to 488.9 μg/ml, compared with free drugs of 136.1 μg/ml. Another interesting finding is that near-infrared (NIR) irradiation increased the speed of solubility of licochalcone A in aqueous solutions, rather than quantity. In short, the method of nano-delivery system combined with poorly water-soluble drug to improve its solubility and dissolution is worth applying to other natural products in order to increase their opportunities in clinical applications.
