Impact of Surface Functionalization and Deposition Method on Cu-BDC surMOF Formation, Morphology, Crystallinity, and Stability

For direct integration into device architectures, surface-anchored metal-organic framework (surMOF) thin films are attractive systems for a wide variety of electronic, photonic, sensing, and gas storage applications. This research systematically investigates the effect of deposition method and surface functionalization on the film formation of a copper paddle-wheel-based surMOF. Solution-phase layer-by-layer (LBL) immersion and LBL spray deposition methods are employed to deposit copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Cu-BDC) on gold substrates functionalized with carboxyl- and hydroxyl-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). A difference in crystal orientation is observed by atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffractometry based on surface functionalization for films deposited by the LBL immersion method but not for spray-deposited films. Cu-BDC crystallites with a strong preferred orientation perpendicular to the substrate were observed for the films deposited by the LBL immersion method on carboxyl-terminated SAMs. These crystals could be removed upon testing adhesive properties, whereas all other Cu-BDC surMOF film structures demonstrated excellent adhesive properties. Additionally, film stability upon exposure to water or heat was investigated. Ellipsometric data provide insight into film formation elucidating 7 and 14 Å average thicknesses per deposition cycle for films deposited by the immersion method on 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUD) and 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHDA), respectively. In contrast, the films deposited by the spray method are thicker with the same average thickness per deposition cycle (21 Å) for both SAMs. While the spray method takes less time to grow thicker films, it produces similar crystallite structures, regardless of the surface functionalization. This research is fundamental to understanding the impact of deposition method and surface functionalization on surMOF film growth and to provide strategies for the preparation of high-quality surMOFs.

Enhancing Interfacial and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Properties of Carbon Fiber Composites via the Hierarchical Assembly of the MWNT/MOF Interphase

A metal-organic framework (MOF) based on a conjugated organic ligand and a transition-metal ion was designed and used to construct a novel multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/MOF interphase via hierarchical assembly on the carbon fiber (CF) surface and was compared to various interphases established by MWNT and MOF. An intertwined MWNT and MOF "jujube core" was randomly dispersed on MWNT@CF and MOF@CF surfaces, while interpenetrating structures with the MWNT network and MOF jujube core were simultaneously observed on MWNT/MOF@CF due to coordination bonds and π-π conjugation effects, which were derived from the MWNT template with carboxyl groups and sp²-hybridized domains as well as the secondary growth of MOF to promote self-assembly and the connection of MOF. The transverse fiber bundle test (TFBT) strength and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the MWNT/MOF@CF composite were 36.9, 6.1, and 20.8%, 16.3% higher than those of MWNT@CF and MOF@CF composites, which were attributed to the smoothed modulus transition of the stiffening interphase formed by the MWNT/MOF hybrid structure as "armor" to effectively buffer the stress transfer between a carbon fiber and the resin matrix. Compared to MWNT@CF and MOF@CF composites, MWNT/MOF@CF composites had the highest EMI shielding effectiveness, which was attributed to the combined effects of multiple reflections, conductive loss, and interface polarization from the interpenetrating MWNT/MOF hybrid structures, which realized the integration of the structure and function of the carbon fiber composites.

Metal-Organic Framework Stationary Phases for One- and Two-Dimensional Micro-Gas Chromatographic Separations of Light Alkanes and Polar Toxic Industrial Chemicals

Despite promising advances with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as stationary phases for chromatography, the application of MOFs for one- and two-dimensional micro-gas chromatography (μGC and μGC × μGC) applications has yet to be shown. We demonstrate for the first time, μGC columns coated with two different MOFs, HKUST-1 and ZIF-8, for the rapid separation of high volatility light alkane hydrocarbons (natural gas) and determined the partition coefficients for toxic industrial chemicals, using μGC and μGC × μGC systems. Complete separation of natural gas components, methane through pentane, was completed within 1 min, with sufficient resolution to discriminate n-butane from i-butane. Layer-by-layer controlled deposition cycles of the MOFs were accomplished to establish the optimal film thickness, which was validated using GC (sorption thermodynamics), quartz-crystal microbalance gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Complete surface coverage was not observed until after ~17 deposition cycles. Propane retention factors with HKUST-1-coated μGC and a state-of-the-art polar, porous-layer open-tubular (PLOT) stationary phase were approximately the same at ~7.5. However, with polar methanol, retention factors with these two stationary phases were 748 and 59, respectively, yielding methanol-to-propane selectivity factors of ~100 and ~8, respectively, a 13-fold increase in polarity with HKUST-1. These studies advance the applications of MOFs as μGC stationary phase.

Metal–Organic Framework Thin Films: Fabrication, Modification, and Patterning

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been of great interest for their outstanding properties, such as large surface area, low density, tunable pore size and functionality, excellent structural flexibility, and good chemical stability. A significant advancement in the preparation of MOF thin films according to the needs of a variety of applications has been achieved in the past decades. Yet there is still high demand in advancing the understanding of the processes to realize more scalable, controllable, and greener synthesis. This review provides a summary of the current progress on the manufacturing of MOF thin films, including the various thin-film deposition processes, the approaches to modify the MOF structure and pore functionality, and the means to prepare patterned MOF thin films. The suitability of different synthesis techniques under various processing environments is analyzed. Finally, we discuss opportunities for future development in the manufacturing of MOF thin films.

Conformal Ultrathin Film Metal-Organic Framework Analogues: Characterization of Growth, Porosity, and Electronic Transport

Thin-film formation and transport properties of two copper-paddlewheel metal-organic framework (MOF) -based systems (MOF-14 and MOF-399) are investigated for their potential integration into electrochemical device architectures. Thin-film analogs of these two systems are fabricated by the sequential, alternating, solution-phase deposition of the inorganic and organic ligand precursors that result in conformal films via van der Merwe-like growth. Atomic force microscopy reveals smooth film morphologies with surface roughnesses determined by the underlying substrates and linear film growth of 1.4 and 2.2 nm per layer for the MOF-14 and MOF-399 systems, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is used to evaluate the electronic transport properties of the thin films, finding that the MOF-14 analog films demonstrate low electronic conductivity, while MOF-399 analog films are electronically insulating. The intrinsic porosities of these ultrathin MOF analog films are confirmed by cyclic voltammetry redox probe characterization using ferrocene. Larger peak currents are observed for MOF-399 analog films compared to MOF-14 analog films, which is consistent with the larger pores of MOF-399. The layer-by-layer deposition of these systems provides a promising route to incorporate MOFs as thin films with nanoscale thickness control and low surface roughness for electrochemical devices.
