Experimental Protocol to Determine the Chloride Threshold Value for Corrosion in Samples Taken from Reinforced Concrete Structures

A novel approach to systematically collect critical chloride contents in concrete in an open access data base

A living data collection providing critical chloride contents for steel corrosion in concrete (C_crit) is presented. The C_crit values were measured on samples taken from engineering structures. This approach allows to overcome the well-known limitations of testing laboratory samples. The data are available in a public data repository. Currently, 46 C_crit are reported (measured on four different structures). The database will continuously be updated. The database includes information about the structure, material properties, and local condition of the steel-concrete interface. Utilization of volcanic ejecta as a high-performance supplementary cementitious material by gravity classification and pulverization

The reaction of natural pozzolans is caused by volcanic glass composed of amorphous silicate; however, volcanic ejecta also contains crystal mineral, pumice, and sometimes weathered clay fraction in their natural conditions. By focusing on the differences of physical properties between these components, high-purity volcanic glass powder (VGP) was manufactured by dry gravity classification and pulverization. This paper reports the results of investigations to utilize pyroclastic flow deposits as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). Through this method, the glass content of VGP increased to 88% with a mean particle size of 1 μm, when that of the raw material is about 60%. Chemical analysis indicated that VGP is principally composed of silica (about 72%) and alumina (about 13%). The performance of VGP as a SCM was evaluated by conducting tests on concrete mixtures, replacing 0% to 30% by weight of portland cement by VGP with a 20% to 60% water to cement ratio. VGP concrete showed better results of 7-and 28-day compressive strength compared to control concrete in all experiments. In particular, VGP demonstrated better flowability and strength development in concrete with a low water-binder ratio in comparison to silica fume.

An Innovative Approach to Control Steel Reinforcement Corrosion by Self-Healing

The corrosion of reinforced steel, and subsequent reinforced concrete degradation, is a major concern for infrastructure durability. New materials with specific, tailor-made properties or the establishment of optimum construction regimes are among the many approaches to improving civil structure performance. Ideally, novel materials would carry self-repairing or self-healing capacities, triggered in the event of detrimental influence and/or damage. Controlling or altering a material's behavior at the nano-level would result in traditional materials with radically enhanced properties. Nevertheless, nanotechnology applications are still rare in construction, and would break new ground in engineering practice. An approach to controlling the corrosion-related degradation of reinforced concrete was designed as a synergetic action of electrochemistry, cement chemistry and nanotechnology. This contribution presents the concept of the approach, namely to simultaneously achieve steel corrosion resistance and improved bulk matrix properties. The technical background and challenges for the application of polymeric nanomaterials in the field are briefly outlined in view of this concept, which has the added value of self-healing. The credibility of the approach is discussed with reference to previously reported outcomes, and is illustrated via the results of the steel electrochemical responses and microscopic evaluations of the discussed materials.
