Abstract
Background/Objectives: Medical therapies that apply biodegradable materials, such as polydioxanone, are widely used to treat various disorders. Thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) is a unique form of acupuncture that exerts long-lasting therapeutic effects by inserting absorbable threads at specific acupuncture points, and is widely used to treat various diseases. However, there is currently a lack of research regarding the safety of TEA. This prospective observational trial aims to evaluate the safety of TEA by collecting and analyzing data related to adverse events in patients receiving TEA in actual practice. Methods: A total of 350 eligible participants who undergo TEA at one of three university-affiliated hospitals and two traditional Korean medicine clinics will be systemically observed for post-treatment adverse reactions. The patients will be monitored at three time points: 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months post-treatment. Safety evaluations will assess the incidence of adverse events and treatment discontinuation rates during the 3-month post-treatment period. Conclusions: This study will evaluate the safety of TEA and provide information for decision-making in clinical practice as well as basic data for future large-scale research.

Abstract
Facial aging prompts a shift in the demands for lifting procedures, transitioning from targeted improvements in younger individuals to overall facial contour enhancements as skin elasticity declines in later years. This paper examines the evolution of PDO volumizing threads, delineating their development from initial limitations to contemporary innovations aimed at addressing tissue deformation and maintaining thread integrity post-insertion. Categorizing these threads based on elasticity, shape, and functionality underscores their versatility and application nuances, catering to specific wrinkle correction, contour sculpting, and facial volume restoration. The discussion emphasizes the pivotal role of thread characteristics in achieving optimal outcomes while minimizing potential complications. By delving into historical contexts, mechanisms, effectiveness, and thread classification, this paper equips practitioners with a comprehensive understanding to make informed decisions in selecting threads for volumizing thread procedures. Recommendations for future research directions, including long-term safety assessments and patient-specific outcomes, seek to enhance the clinical utility and applicability of this analysis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thread lifting is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that utilizes threads to lift and tighten sagging skin on the face. In Lateral face lifting with anchoring technique, the threads are inserted into the skin and anchored in place to provide support to the skin at artery free zone. This technique utilizes a long cog thread, allowing for stronger fixation points. The optimal location for thread anchoring is in the fascia of the treatment area. METHOD AND MATERIALS The study was performed with twelve cadavers with twenty-four specimens of head from cadavers and was processed using phosphotungstic acid-based contrast enhancement micro-computed tomography and conventional computed tomography. The superficial temporal artery with branches of parietal and temporal were then observed with image Slicer program to analyze the safe anchoring place for the deep temporal fascia. The main branch was selected with diameter over 0.3 mm and less than 0.3 mm was regarded as arteriole. Additionally, a case of deep temporal tagging with the Secret Miracle (Hyundae Meditech Co., Ltd., South Korea) has been used for lifting procedures. RESULT The main branch of the parietal branch located posteriorly was located mean of -13 mm (range of +5.5 mm to -23 mm). And the temporal artery ran most anteriorly had mean of 44 mm anteriorly (range of 32 to 59 mm). The safe area for the tagging is at the deep temporal fascia between the superior temporal line and inferior temporal line. The safe range of deep temporal fascia is a vertical line crossing tragus from 1 to 3 cm anteriorly. CONCLUSION By analyzing the result of the superficial temporal artery of parietal and temporal branches the ideal tagging place for the thread anchoring area has been suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have reported the role of hair follicles (HFs) in the wound healing response, and vice versa, the creation of superficial injuries may stimulate hair growth, which has encouraged new treatments for hair loss. OBJECTIVE To review the phenomenon of wound-induced hair growth and the usefulness of therapeutic procedures based on skin wounding in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). METHODS A literature search was conducted to review cases of localized hypertrichosis induced by wounds and the role of microneedling, fractional laser, and scalp threading as monotherapy for AGA. RESULTS Localized hypertrichosis has been extensively reported after bone fractures, burn injury, chronic venous ulcer, etc. Only 2 cases of wound-induced hair neogenesis in humans have been reported. As monotherapy for AGA, 1 of 3 studies of microneedling, 4 of 6 of fractional lasers, and 2 of 3 studies of scalp threading show good efficacy. CONCLUSION Certain types of wounds seem to stimulate localized hair growth in humans, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. Reports on wound-induced HF neogenesis in humans are anecdotal and questions remain as to whether this is a true phenomenon in humans. Further clinical studies are needed before recommending wound-induced hair growth procedures as therapies for AGA.

Abstract
Objective Obesity is an epidemic with an increasing prevalence in developing countries. The condition affects almost all physiologic functions of the body and is a significant threat to public health. Treatment of obesity is often difficult and expensive. Pharmacologic therapy has many side-effects. Acupuncture, a nonpharmacologic therapy, has shown promising results for treating obesity. Electroacupuncture (EA) and thread-embedded acupuncture (TEA) can be used. The aim of this study was to analyze the therapeutic effects of EA and TEA, using polydioxanone (PDO), on weight loss, waist circumference, and plasma-leptin concentrations in obese patients undergoing a dietary intervention. Materials and Methods This single-blinded, randomized clinical trial randomized 34 subjects into 2 groups: EA and TEA. In the EA group, EA was administered 3 times per week for 4 weeks (a total of 12 sessions). In the TEA group, EA was administered only once. Body weight and waist circumference were measured at baseline, and on days 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 (end) of the trial. Plasma-leptin concentrations were measured at the beginning and end of the trial. Results There was a significant decrease in body weight and waist circumference in the groups before and after treatment (P < 0.001), and a significant decrease in plasma-leptin concentrations in the EA (P = 0.012) and TEA groups (P = 0.001). There were no significant differences between the groups in weight loss (P = 0.621), waist circumference (P = 0.545), and plasma-leptin concentration (P = 0.784). Conclusions EA and PDO TEA are equally effective for reducing body weight, waist circumference, and plasma-leptin concentrations in obese patients undergoing dietary interventions. However, TEA is more time-efficient than EA.

Abstract
Although thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) is widely used for facial nerve palsy (FNP) in Korea, it lacks clinical evidence. Therefore, a large-scale and long-term clinical trial is needed. It is necessary to standardize and optimize TEA treatment for clinical study. Hence, we collected information about how TEA in the facial region is performed in clinical practice using a web-based survey. A questionnaire was developed consisting of 22 essential items and 30 optional items including demographic characteristics, purpose of TEA, adverse events (AE), direct medical cost, required time, and current state of TEA treatment on FNP. The questionnaire was sent via e-mail to 23,910 traditional Korean medicine doctors (TKMD). A total of 427 respondents answered the questionnaire. The most common response for the purpose for TEA was cosmetic, followed by musculoskeletal disease and nervous system disease. The most common AE that resolved without medical treatment was bruising (90.4%). The most common AE that required medical treatment was dimple (30.5). Many respondents commonly used TEA for the sequelae of FNP (71.8%). The most frequent sequelae of FNP for which TEA was used as contracture around the mouth (75.3%). The most preferred treatment method was insertion of 6-10 monofilament threads using a 29-gauge needle at intervals of 2.2 ± 1.59 weeks in the sequelae period. The results of this survey can be used to standardize and optimize the procedure of TEA for FNP for further clinical research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) is a special type of acupuncture treatment in which medical threads are inserted into subcutaneous tissues or muscles at therapeutic points. TEA is a medical practice that combines acupuncture and medical threads. As such, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of TEA. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the safety of TEA and reporting quality of studies regarding TEA. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The systematic review will be conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Searching strategies will be systemically conducted using the following databases from their inception date to September 2022: MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), CiNii, J-STAGE, Korean Medical Database, Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), ScienceON and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS). The search strategies will be adjusted for each database as appropriate. The risk of bias will be assessed using the McMaster tool to identify the quality of harm assessment and reporting in study reports (McHarm). A meta-analysis will be used to synthesise the frequency and incidence of adverse events. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval and consent is required for this systematic review. The results of this systematic review will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022297123.

Abstract
Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional change of the spine, presenting 10° above Cobb angle. Various acupuncture methods are being increasingly performed to correct scoliosis. However, no systematic review has been published. Therefore, we report on the effectiveness of acupuncture on mild scoliosis in this systematic review. We searched various databases for acupuncture treatment for scoliosis published before June 2021. The primary outcome was Cobb angle, and the secondary outcomes were patient-centered scores. Six studies were identified. RCTs that compared combination therapy with acupuncture, and other treatment methods and showed significant improvement in the Cobb angle, and effective rate, but, with low quality evidence. Acupuncture monotherapy resulted in significant improvement in the Cobb angle and had high heterogeneity compared with other treatment methods, but no significant improvement in the effective rate was observed, and the quality of evidence was low. Regardless of the type of scoliosis, acupuncture monotherapy or combination therapy with acupuncture showed significant improvement in the Cobb angle, and the quality of evidence was moderate. No serious adverse events were observed in the 6 studies reviewed. Acupuncture is considered safe, and it is more effective when performed with other conventional treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral facial paralysis sequela (PFPS) is a group of sequence syndrome after the acute onset of peripheral facial paralysis. Nearly 70% of patients with peripheral facial paralysis recover completely, but nearly 30% of patients leave multiple sequelae, which have serious negative impacts on the physical and psychological health of patients. Without a high risk of side effect, acupoint catgut embedding (ACE), a common acupuncture therapy, is widely used to treat this disorder. And a number of studies have shown the efficacy of this therapy for PFPS. But in fact, the evidence of the overall effect of ACE in the treatment of PFPS is still insufficient. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and safety of ACE for PFPS. METHODS Two reviewers will collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on ACE for PFPS by searching the following databases, including The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, China Biomedical Literature (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP), and Wanfang database, from their initiation to May 2021. The searching of publications will include English and Chinese without any restriction of countries and regions. Besides, 2 reviewers will independently include in studies that meet the inclusion criteria and extract data we need, then use Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias Tool to assess their methodological quality. The efficacy and safety of ACE as a treatment for PFPS will be assessed according to the synthetic risk ratio (RR), odds ratio (OR), or weighted mean difference (WMD), standardized mean difference (SMD) with consistent 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). And the Review Manager 5.3 software will be adopted to conduct the statistical analysis. RESULTS The protocol for meta-analysis will systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of ACE for PFPS. And the final result of this search will provide sufficient evidence and an authentic assessment focusing on the problem. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to determine the feasibility of thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) for the treatment of shoulder instability. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a patient-assessor blinded, randomized, sham-controlled trial with two parallel arms. A total of 40 patients with shoulder instability aged between 13 and 43 years will be recruited and screened using set inclusion and exclusion criteria. After screening, they will be randomly allocated to the TEA or sham TEA group. Patients in both groups will then receive TEA or sham TEA treatment on six acupoints once a week for 8 weeks, which will be followed by additional follow-up assessments at 4 and 8 weeks after the end of treatment. Changes in shoulder pain and disability will be assessed as the primary outcome, whereas 100-mm pain visual analogue scale, shoulder range of motion, rotator cuff quality of life index, EuroQol 5-dimension 5-levels, treatment satisfaction, economic evaluation, and safety will all be measured as secondary outcomes of the study. Outcome assessment will be conducted at baseline and at 4, 8, and 16 weeks after screening. CONCLUSION The results from this trial will help to design further clinical trials on the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of performing TEA for shoulder instability. Abstract
Purpose The prevalence of non-specific posterior neck pain (NPNP) has been increasing yearly. There are several treatments for NPNP, but in this review, we will focus on thread-embedded acupuncture (TEA). TEA is used in the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, and China for managing musculoskeletal diseases, obesity, and sequelae of facial palsy. However, there is insufficient evidence on its effectiveness and safety. This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of TEA for NPNP. Methods We will search the following nine electronic databases, from their inception to May 2020: MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Citation Information by the National Information infrastructure, Korean Studies Information Service System, National Digital Science Library, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, and Research Information Service System. Only randomized controlled trials of TEA for NPNP will be included. The methodological quality of the included trials will be assessed using the Cochrane risk-of bias tool. To conduct the meta-analysis, the risk ratio and mean difference with the 95% confidence interval will be used. Sensitivity analyses will be conducted based on this protocol. Results The results of this study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Conclusion The results of this study would provide the evidence of whether TEA can be effective for treating NPNP. Registration Number PROSPERO CRD42020188346.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Monofilament thread therapy (PLLA) and minoxidil have been used as alternative treatments for female androgenetic alopecia. AIM The aim was to determine the efficacy and safety of thread therapy combined with minoxidil in female androgenetic alopecia. PATIENT AND METHODS Twenty-seven women were enrolled in this randomized half-split study based on a left-head to the right-head pattern. Thread therapy (PLLA) treatment was unilaterally performed (once); minoxidil was bilaterally applied for 6 months. Global photographs and dermoscopy assessments were performed in the baseline and every 2 months till the end of treatment. Global photographs underwent blinded review by three independent dermatologists. RESULTS Mean hair density increased from 114 ± 27 to 143 ± 25/cm2 (P < .001) in the combined group and from 113 ± 24 to 123 ± 19/cm2 in the minoxidil group (P < .001). The mean change from baseline between the two groups was also compared (P = .003). Global photographs showed improvement in 93% (25/27) patients in the combined group and 52% (14/27) patients in the minoxidil group. CONCLUSION Poly-l-lactic acid microthread therapy combined with minoxidil may improve hair density, hair thickness, and hair appearance better than minoxidil alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Catgut implantation at acupoint (CIAA) is increasing used in allergic rhinitis therapy, and many studies have published that it is effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. However, it is controversy if CIAA can provide an evidence-based clinical benefit in the allergic rhinitis population. METHODS We will go through 8 databases, and conduct a systematic review of CIAA and health-related outcomes in allergic rhinitis patients according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews. The primary objective is to assess the impact of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines on clinical outcomes relevant to allergic rhinitis patients, such as effective rate, life-quality evaluation, and adverse events. Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool will be used to assess the quality of eligible studies according to the Cochrane handbook. RESULTS The results of this systematic review will provide a synthesis of current evidence of CIAA and we have a specific opportunity to determine the efficacy and safety of it. Abstract
BACKGROUND Lumbar herniated intervertebral disc (LHIVD) is a frequent disease among patients attending Korean medicine hospitals, and it is associated with considerable medical expenses for the patients. Although several recent randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have reported that thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) has a more favorable therapeutic effect on LHIVD than other types of acupuncture or other treatments, the evidence remains limited because these trials used poor assessment methods and had a high risk of bias. This study aims to evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness and safety of TEA for LHIVD. In this article, we describe our methods and plan for a systematic review. METHODS We will conduct an electronic search of the following databases from their inception to May 2018: MEDLINE; EMBASE; COCHRANE; China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) (a Chinese database); CiNii and J-STAGE (Japanese databases); and KoreaMed, Korean Medical Database (KMbase), Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), National Digital Science Library (NDSL), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS). RCTs investigating any type of TEA will be included. The risk of bias in each study will be evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Risk ratios or mean differences with 95% confidence intervals will be used to show the effects of TEA if it will be possible to conduct a meta-analysis. Sensitivity analyses will also be conducted in this study. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval is not necessary as this paper does not involve patient data. Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, thread treatment has been commonly used in Korean medicine for cosmetic reasons such as decreasing skin wrinkles. It was noted that an inserted thread caused constant stimulation, followed by assistance for connective tissue regeneration. However, its role in hair development has not yet been revealed. OBJECTIVE To perform a pilot study on the effect of monofilament threads scalp injections in women with female androgenetic alopecia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled study compared the effect of monofilament threads with that of saline as placebo. The endpoints were hair count and hair mass index (HMI), along with patient-opinion survey responses. RESULTS HMI or hair count has statistically significantly differed between the study and placebo groups. However, 73.3% of the treatment subjects (vs. 0% of the placebo subjects) experienced substantial improvement in hair loss, rate of hair loss, hair thickness, and ease of managing/styling hair, and 76.8% (vs. 18.4% of the placebo group) reported that their hair felt coarser or heavier after the treatment. CONCLUSION Monofilament threads demonstrate highly statistically significant improvement in HMI or hair count in women female pattern hair loss. The patient survey results suggest a therapeutic advantage of monofilament threads as perceived by patients and according to hair count or HMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sequelae of Bell's palsy cause critical problem in facial appearance, as well as social and psychological problems in the patient's life. The aim of the present study is to establish clinical evidence of thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) in the treatment of sequelae of Bell's palsy. METHOD/DESIGN This is a patient-assessor blinded, randomized, sham-controlled trial with two parallel arms. Fifty-six patients aged 19-65 years, who have experienced sequelae of Bell's palsy for >3 months, will be recruited and screened using the eligibility criteria. After screening, they will be randomly allocated to a TEA group or a sham TEA (STEA) group. Both groups will receive TEA or STEA treatment on ten predefined acupoints once a week for 8 weeks. Additionally, both groups will receive the same acupuncture treatment twice a week for 8 weeks as a concurrent treatment. Changes in the Facial Disability Index over 8 weeks will be assessed as the primary outcome. Furthermore, the House-Brackmann Grade, Facial Nerve Grading System 2.0, Sunnybrook Facial Grading System, facial stiffness score, lip mobility score, and treatment satisfaction score will be measured and analyzed as secondary outcomes. All outcomes will be assessed at baseline and at 4 and 8 weeks after screening. DISCUSSION The results from this trial will help establish clinical evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of TEA in the treatment of patients with sequelae of Bell's palsy. Abstract
BACKGROUND Back pain is one of the most common diseases, and many patients with recurrent pain seek alternative treatment strategies. Thread embedding acupuncture involves thread insertion at the acupuncture point for continuous physical and chemical stimulation. Although thread embedding is widely used in clinical practice, there is no sound evidence of its efficacy for chronic back pain. We describe the protocol for a randomized controlled trial for investigation of the efficacy and safety of thread embedding acupuncture combined with conventional acupuncture for chronic low back pain. METHODS This randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, 2-armed, parallel, multicenter clinical trial will include 38 outpatients with chronic low back pain recruited from 4 traditional Korean Medicine hospitals. The patients will be randomly allocated to a treatment group (conventional acupuncture + thread embedding acupuncture) and a control group (only conventional acupuncture) in a 1:1 ratio. The treatment group patients will receive thread embedding acupuncture treatment at 10 acupuncture points (multifidus muscle, 4 points; spinal erector muscles, four points; lumbar quadrate muscle, 2 points) once a week for 8 weeks (8 sessions). In addition, all patients will receive conventional acupuncture treatment at 14 acupuncture points (GV3, EX-B5, and bilateral BL23, BL24, BL25, BL26, BL40, and BL60) twice a week for 8 weeks (16 sessions). The primary outcome will be the change in the visual analog scale score from visit 1 to visit 16, analyzed by independent t tests, in both groups. The groups will also be compared with regard to the clinical relevance (minimal clinically important difference), quality of life (3-level version of Euroqol-5D), disability level (Roland and Morris Disability Questionnaire), global assessment (patient global impression of change), and safety. Cost data for cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses will be collected. DISCUSSION Our study results will provide evidence of the efficacy and safety of thread embedding acupuncture combined with conventional acupuncture for the management of chronic low back pain. Even though the assessors will be blinded, the patients will not be blinded to treatment because of the lack of a sham embedding acupuncture group; this is a limitation of our study. Abstract
Thread-embedding therapy has been widely applied for cosmetic purposes such as wrinkle reduction and skin tightening. Particularly, gold thread was reported to support connective tissue regeneration, but, its role in hair biology remains largely unknown due to lack of investigation. When we implanted gold thread and Happy Lift™ in human patient for facial lifting, we unexpectedly found an increase of hair regrowth in spite of no use of hair growth medications. When embedded into the depilated dorsal skin of mice, gold thread or polyglycolic acid (PGA) thread, similarly to 5% minoxidil, significantly increased the number of hair follicles on day 14 after implantation. And, hair re-growth promotion in the gold threadimplanted mice were significantly higher than that in PGA thread group on day 11 after depilation. In particular, the skin tissue of gold thread-implanted mice showed stronger PCNA staining and higher collagen density compared with control mice. These results indicate that gold thread implantation can be an effective way to promote hair re-growth although further confirmatory study is needed for more information on therapeutic mechanisms and long-term safety.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) is a special type of acupuncture that inserts certain medical threads (eg, catgut or polydioxanone) into subcutaneous tissue or muscles at specific points. Although TEA has been widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain in Korea, China and Taiwan, evidence regarding its efficacy is lacking. The aim of this protocol is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of TEA in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The following 16 databases will be searched from their inception to 14 May 2017: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, three Chinese database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database and the Wanfang database) and eight Korean databases (Korean Medical Database, Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors, Korean Studies Information Service System, Korean National Assembly Digital Library, National Digital Science Library, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, 'Database Periodical Information Academic and Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal'). The WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform will also be searched to retrieve the recently completed studies.All randomised controlled studies in which TEA was used on specific points for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain will be included and no restrictions on language will be applied. The risk of bias of each study will be evaluated by the Cochrane risk of bias tool.Mean difference or standardised mean difference for continuous data and risk ratio for dichotomous data will be calculated with 95% CIs using a random effects model or a fixed effects model. Additional subgroup and sensitivity analyses will be conducted according to a predefined protocol. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical issues are predicted. The systematic review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference presentation. These findings will summarise the current evidence of TEA for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and may provide guidance for clinicians and patients to select TEA for musculoskeletal pain. Abstract
Background There is a growing trend for patients to seek the least invasive treatments with less risk of complications and downtime for facial rejuvenation. Thread embedding acupuncture has become popular as a minimally invasive treatment. However, there is little clinical evidence in the literature regarding its effects. Methods This single-arm, prospective, open-label study recruited participants who were women aged 40-59 years, with Glogau photoaging scale III-IV. Fourteen participants received thread embedding acupuncture one time and were measured before and after 1 week from the procedure. The primary outcome was a jowl to subnasale vertical distance. The secondary outcomes were facial wrinkle distances, global esthetic improvement scale, Alexiades-Armenakas laxity scale, and patient-oriented self-assessment scale. Results Fourteen participants underwent thread embedding acupuncture alone, and 12 participants revisited for follow-up outcome measures. For the primary outcome measure, both jowls were elevated in vertical height by 1.87 mm (left) and 1.43 mm (right). Distances of both melolabial and nasolabial folds showed significant improvement. In the Alexiades-Armenakas laxity scale, each evaluator evaluated for four and nine participants by 0.5 grades improved. In the global aesthetic improvement scale, improvement was graded as 1 and 2 in nine and five cases, respectively. The most common adverse events were mild bruising, swelling, and pain. However, adverse events occurred, although mostly minor and of short duration. Conclusion In this study, thread embedding acupuncture showed clinical potential for facial wrinkles and laxity. However, further large-scale trials with a controlled design and objective measurements are needed.
