Engin A. Endothelial Dysfunction in Obesity and Therapeutic Targets. ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY 2024; 1460:489-538. Abstract
Parallel to the increasing prevalence of obesity in the world, the mortality from cardiovascular disease has also increased. Low-grade chronic inflammation in obesity disrupts vascular homeostasis, and the dysregulation of adipocyte-derived endocrine and paracrine effects contributes to endothelial dysfunction. Besides the adipose tissue inflammation, decreased nitric oxide (NO)-bioavailability, insulin resistance (IR), and oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDLs) are the main factors contributing to endothelial dysfunction in obesity and the development of cardiorenal metabolic syndrome. While normal healthy perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) ensures the dilation of blood vessels, obesity-associated PVAT leads to a change in the profile of the released adipo-cytokines, resulting in a decreased vasorelaxing effect. Higher stiffness parameter β, increased oxidative stress, upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) oxidase in PVAT turn the macrophages into pro-atherogenic phenotypes by oxLDL-induced adipocyte-derived exosome-macrophage crosstalk and contribute to the endothelial dysfunction. In clinical practice, carotid ultrasound, higher leptin levels correlate with irisin over-secretion by human visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues, and remnant cholesterol (RC) levels predict atherosclerotic disease in obesity. As a novel therapeutic strategy for cardiovascular protection, liraglutide improves vascular dysfunction by modulating a cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-independent protein kinase A (PKA)-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway in PVAT in obese individuals. Because the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activity, hyperinsulinemia, and the resultant IR play key roles in the progression of cardiovascular disease in obesity, RAAS-targeted therapies contribute to improving endothelial dysfunction. By contrast, arginase reciprocally inhibits NO formation and promotes oxidative stress. Thus, targeting arginase activity as a key mediator in endothelial dysfunction has therapeutic potential in obesity-related vascular comorbidities. Obesity-related endothelial dysfunction plays a pivotal role in the progression of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonist, rosiglitazone (thiazolidinedione), is a popular drug for treating diabetes; however, it leads to increased cardiovascular risk. Selective sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor empagliflozin (EMPA) significantly improves endothelial dysfunction and mortality occurring through redox-dependent mechanisms. Although endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress are alleviated by either metformin or EMPA, currently used drugs to treat obesity-related diabetes neither possess the same anti-inflammatory potential nor simultaneously target endothelial cell dysfunction and obesity equally. While therapeutic interventions with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist liraglutide or bariatric surgery reverse regenerative cell exhaustion, support vascular repair mechanisms, and improve cardiometabolic risk in individuals with T2D and obesity, the GLP-1 analog exendin-4 attenuates endothelial endoplasmic reticulum stress.

Abstract
Obesity increases the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes through increased inflammation at cellular and tissue levels. Therefore, study of the molecular elements involved in obesity-related inflammation may contribute to preventing and controlling it. Inorganic polyphosphate is a natural phosphate polymer that has recently been attracting more attention for its role in inflammation and hemostasis processes. Polyphosphates are one of the main constituents of human platelets, which are secreted after platelet activation. Among other roles, they interact with multiple proteins of the coagulation cascade, trigger bradykinin release, and inhibit the complement system. Despite its importance, determinations of polyphosphate levels in blood plasma had been elusive until recently, when we developed a method to detect these levels precisely. Here, we perform cross sectional studies to evaluate plasma polyphosphate in: 25 children, most of them with obesity and overweight, and 20 adults, half of them with severe type 2 diabetes. Our results show that polyphosphate increases, in a significant manner, in children with insulin resistance and in type 2 diabetes patients. As we demonstrated before that polyphosphate decreases in healthy overweight individuals, these results suggest that this polymer could be an inflammation biomarker in the metabolic disease onset before diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An association between hemoglobin and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been reported. However, the relationships between hemoglobin and individual MetS components remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated these associations at baseline and at the 3-year follow-up. METHODS We enrolled 9960 middle-aged and elderly subjects (6726 women and 3234 men) and performed a 3-year follow-up cohort study. All subjects completed a questionnaire and underwent anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests. Logistic regression models were developed to assess the association between hemoglobin and MetS and its components. RESULTS MetS was present in 45.1% of women and 41.4% of men at baseline. The hemoglobin concentration was positively correlated with SBP, DBP, TGs, WC, FPG, insulin, HOMA-IR, BMI and uric acid (p < 0.05). The mean hemoglobin concentration was higher in subjects with hypertension, high TGs, abdominal obesity or elevated FPG (p < 0.01). At follow-up, elevated hemoglobin correlated with an increased incidence and ORs for MetS, high TGs, low HDL-c, hyperuricemia and NAFLD but not abdominal obesity, BP or FPG in women. Increased hemoglobin corresponded with an increased incidence and ORs for MetS, abdominal obesity, low HDL-c, hyperuricemia and NAFLD but not BP, high TGs or FPG in men. CONCLUSIONS Hemoglobin may play a role in predicting new-onset MetS in both women and men. Hemoglobin was notably correlated with future risk of high TGs, low HDL-c, hyperuricemia, and NAFLD among women and abdominal obesity, low HDL-c, hyperuricemia, and NAFLD among men.

Abstract
To compare circulating pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF) levels in type 2 diabetes patients (T2D) with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS+/-) to healthy controls and assess PEDF association with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) as markers of endothelial dysfunction. Fifty T2D individuals and forty healthy controls were included. PEDF, PAI-1, vWF, anthropological parameters, lipids, and markers of insulin resistance were investigated in all subjects. Compared to controls only MetS+ diabetics had higher PEDF levels [14.2 (10.2-16.0) mg/l vs. 11.1 (8.6-14.4) mg/l; p<0.05]. PEDF significantly correlated: positively with body mass index (ρ=0.25), smoking (ρ=0.21), C-reactive protein (ρ=0.22), triglycerides (ρ=0.38), non-HDL-cholesterol (ρ=0.39), apolipoprotein B (ρ=0.38), fasting glucose (ρ=0.22), glycated hemoglobin (ρ=0.24), C-peptide (ρ=0.28), insulin (ρ=0.26); and negatively with HDL-cholesterol (ρ=-0.42) and apolipoprotein A1 (ρ=-0.27). Independent association of PEDF with vWF in T2DMetS- subjects was found. Significantly elevated PEDF in T2DMet+ patients and its association with adverse metabolic profile confirmed PEDF as a marker of insulin resistance. Negative independent association of PEDF with vWF in T2DMetS- patients may reveal its angio-protective role.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze millet protein hydrolyzates and peptide fractions with molecular mass under 3.0 kDa obtained from grains treated with different temperature values as inhibitors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), α-amylase, and α-glucosidase activity. The protein fractions were hydrolyzed in vitro in gastrointestinal conditions and the highest degree of hydrolysis was noted for globulin 7S obtained from control grains (98.33%). All samples were characterized by a high peptide bioaccessibility index, which was 23.89 for peptides obtained from globulin 11S after treatment with 100 °C. The highest peptide bioavailability index was noted for peptides obtained from globulin 11S after the treatment with 65 °C (2.12). The highest potential metabolic syndrome inhibitory effect was determined for peptide fractions obtained from the prolamin control (IC50 for ACE and α-amylase was 0.42 and 0.11 mg/mL, respectively) and after the 100 °C treatment (IC50 for ACE and α-glucosidase was 0.33 and 0.12 mg/mL, respectively) and from globulin 11S after the 65 °C treatment (IC50 0.38 and 0.05 for ACE and α-glucosidase, respectively). The effect of these samples on endothelial cell HECa10 was determined. The sequences of potential inhibitory peptides were identified as GEHGGAGMGGGQFQPV, EQGFLPGPEESGR, RLARAGLAQ, YGNPVGGVGH, and GNPVGGVGHGTTGT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increasing studies have reported that erythrocyte parameters, including red blood cells (RBCs), haematocrit (HCT), haemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW), are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults worldwide. However, the association, stratified by sex, remains to be elucidated, particularly in the Pearl River Delta region of China. Therefore, our aim was to explore the association of erythrocyte parameters with MetS, stratified by sex, in the Pearl River Delta region of China. METHODS In this cross sectional study, 2161 men and 2511 women were enrolled. MetS was diagnosed using a modified version of the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate adjusted ORs of erythrocyte parameters associated with MetS stratified by sex. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was higher in women than in men (35.2%vs26.7%). RBC, HCT, Hb and RDW values increased linearly with the number of MetS components from 0 to 5 identified in both men and women. Among men, the ORs of MetS risk increased across the tertiles of Hb (Q2: OR=1.921, 95% CI=1.170 to 3.151; Q3: OR=1.992, 95%CI=1.198 to 3.312). Men in the highest tertiles of RDW had a 2.752-fold increased risk of suffering from MetS compared with those in the reference group. Among women, the ORs of MetS risk also increased across the tertiles of Hb (Q2: OR=1.538, 95%CI=1.008 to 2.348; Q3: OR=1.665, 95%CI=1.075 to 2.578). Women in the highest tertiles of RBC had a 1.718-fold increased risk of experiencing MetS compared with those in the reference group. CONCLUSIONS MetS was more prevalent in women than in men. The association between erythrocyte parameters and MetS differed between the sexes. RBC and Hb were identified as risk factors for MetS in women and Hb and RDW as risk factors in men.

Abstract
Aim: Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) has been suggested to be a positive regulator of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) in adipocytes, while some studies are not consistent with this prothrombotic property of S1P. Since S1P is bound to apolipoprotein M (apoM) on HDL or to albumin in plasma, we compared the properties of these two forms on the PAI-1 induction. Methods: We investigated the associations of S1P, apoM, and PAI-1 concentrations in the plasma of normal coronary artery (NCA), stable angina pectoris (SAP), and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) subjects (n = 32, 71, and 38, respectively). Then, we compared the effects of S1P with various vehicles on the PAI-1 expression in 3T3L1 adipocytes. We also investigated the modulation of the PAI-1 levels in mice infected with adenovirus coding apoM. Results: Among ACS subjects, the PAI-1 level was positively correlated with the S1P level, but not the apoM level. In adipocytes, S1P bound to an apoM-rich vehicle induced PAI-1 expression to a lesser extent than the control vehicle, while S1P bound to an apoM-depleted vehicle induced PAI-1 expression to a greater extent than the control vehicle in 3T3L1 adipocytes. Additionally, apoM overexpression in mice failed to modulate the plasma PAI-1 level and the adipose PAI-1 expression level. S1P bound to albumin increased PAI-1 expression through the S1P receptor 2-Rho/ROCK-NFκB pathway. Conclusion: S1P bound to albumin, but not to apoM, induces PAI-1 expression in adipocytes, indicating that S1P can exert different properties on the pathogenesis of vascular diseases, depending on its vehicle.

Abstract
Chronic inflammatory state in obesity causes dysregulation of the endocrine and paracrine actions of adipocyte-derived factors, which disrupt vascular homeostasis and contribute to endothelial vasodilator dysfunction and subsequent hypertension. While normal healthy perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) ensures the dilation of blood vessels, obesity-associated PVAT leads to a change in profile of the released adipo-cytokines, resulting in a decreased vasorelaxing effect. Adipose tissue inflammation, nitric oxide (NO)-bioavailability, insulin resistance and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) are main participating factors in endothelial dysfunction of obesity. In this chapter, disruption of inter-endothelial junctions between endothelial cells, significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammation mediators, which are originated from inflamed endothelial cells, the balance between NO synthesis and ROS , insulin signaling and NO production, and decrease in L-arginine/endogenous asymmetric dimethyl-L-arginine (ADMA) ratio are discussed in connection with endothelial dysfunction in obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between inflammatory markers, coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters, and microvascular complications in 182 Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who sought treatment at a large hospital in Zhejiang province, China. METHODS We investigated the relationships of blood inflammatory markers with hemostatic markers in 87 patients with T2DM who did not have complications and 95 patients with T2DM who had microvascular complications. RESULTS C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly correlated with fibrinogen, thrombin-antithrombin III complex (TAT III), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), von Willebrand factor (vWF), and coagulation factors (F) VII in patients with T2DM who had microvascular complications (P <.05). Based on logistic regression analysis, the highest-tertile groups of fibrinogen, FVII, and FVIII, corresponded to a greater risk of high CRP, whereas risk of high IL-6 was significantly greater in the groups with highest-tertile values for fibrinogen, FVII, TAT III, PAI-1, and activated protein C (APC). CONCLUSIONS Elevated levels of CRP and IL-6 might be associated with increased coagulability and a tendency towards thrombus formation in patients with T2DM who have microvascular complications.

Abstract
Obesity is characterised by low-grade inflammation, which increases the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risks. The aim of the present study was to verify the role of multicomponent therapy in controlling the MetS, inflammation and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in obese adolescents. The second aim was to investigate the relationships between adipokines, the MetS parameters and cIMT. A total of sixty-nine obese adolescents participated in the present study and completed 1 year of multicomponent therapy (a combination of strategies involving nutrition, psychology, physical exercise and clinical therapy), and were divided according to their MetS diagnosis as follows: MetS (n 19); non-MetS (n 50). Blood analyses of glucose, lipid and adipokine concentrations (adiponectin, leptin, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and C-reactive protein) were collected. Insulin resistance was assessed using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, quantitative insulin sensitivity check index and homeostasis model assessment-adiponectin. cIMT and visceral and subcutaneous fat were estimated using ultrasonography. At baseline, the MetS group presented higher waist circumference, glucose and insulin levels, and systolic and median blood pressures compared with the non-MetS group. After therapy, both groups showed improvements in the anthropometric profile, body composition, insulin level, insulin resistance, insulin sensibility, TAG and VLDL-cholesterol, adiponectin, leptin and PAI-1 levels, blood pressure and cIMT. The prevalence of the MetS was reduced from 27·5 to 13·0 %. Metabolic syndrome patients showed resistance in the attenuation of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and leptin:adiponectin and adiponectin:leptin ratios. In the MetS group, the variation in the adiponectin:leptin ratio was correlated with variations in glucose, insulin sensibility, total cholesterol, LDL-c and systolic blood pressure. Additionally, the number of MetS parameters was correlated with the carotid measurement. Moreover, the variation in cIMT was correlated with the variations in insulin sensibility, total cholesterol and LDL-c. For the entire group, the number of MetS alterations was correlated with the leptin level and leptin:adiponectin ratio and adiponectin:leptin ratio after therapy. In conclusion, multicomponent therapy was effective in controlling the MetS, inflammation and cIMT in the obese adolescents. However, the MetS patients showed resistance in the attenuation of the atherogenic lipid profile and leptin:adiponectin ratio and adiponectin:leptin ratio. These results suggest that the MetS patients have increased cardiovascular risks, and that it is important to attempt to control the inflammatory process that occurs due to obesity in clinical practice in order to improve the health of adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Repairing cyanotic congenital heart disease may be associated with preserving endothelial function. The present study aimed to evaluate vascular endothelial function in patients with repaired cyanotic congenital heart disease. METHODS In a case-control study conducted in 2012 in Isfahan, Iran, 42 consecutive patients aged <35 years who had suffered from different types of cyanotic congenital heart disease and had undergone complete repair of their congenital heart defect were assessed in regard to their endothelial function state by measuring flow-mediated dilatation and other cardiac function indices. They were paired with 42 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. RESULTS The mean flow-mediated dilatation was lower in patients with repaired cyanotic congenital heart disease than in the controls [6.14±2.78 versus 8.16±1.49 respectively (p<0.001)]. Significant adverse correlations were found between flow-mediated dilatation, age, and body mass indexes, in those who underwent repair surgery. In addition, flow-mediated dilatation had a positive association with the shortening fraction, ejection fraction, and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion value, and it was also inversely associated with carotid intima-media thickness and the myocardial performance index. The mean of the flow-mediated dilatation was significantly higher in the group with tetralogy of Fallot along with complete repair before the age of 2.5 years and also in those patients with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection or transposition of the great arteries repaired with an arterial switch operation before 6 months of age, compared with the other two subgroups. This includes patients with a tetralogy of Fallot defect repaired after 4 years of age and those with complex cyanotic congenital heart disease that was repaired after 2.5 years of age (mean age at repair 9±6.1 years). CONCLUSION Early repair of a cyanotic defect can result in the protection of vascular endothelial function and prevent the occurrence of vascular accidents at an older age.

Abstract
Background Many MetS related biomarkers had been discovered, which provided the possibility for building the MetS prediction model. In this paper we aimed to develop a novel routine biomarker-based risk prediction model for MetS in urban Han Chinese population. Methods Exploring Factor analysis (EFA) was firstly conducted in MetS positive 13,345 males and 3,212 females respectively for extracting synthetic latent predictors (SLPs) from 11 routine biomarkers. Then, depending on the cohort with 5 years follow-up in 1,565 subjects (male 1,020 and female 545), a Cox model for predicting 5 years MetS was built by using SLPs as predictor; Area under the ROC curves (AUC) with 10 fold cross validation was used to evaluate its power. Absolute risk (AR) and relative absolute risk (RAR) were calculated to develop a risk matrix for visualization of risk assessment. Results Six SLPs were extracted by EFA from 11 routine health check-up biomarkers. Each of them reflected the specific pathogenesis of MetS, with inflammatory factor (IF) contributed by WBC & LC & NGC, erythrocyte parameter factor (EPF) by Hb & HCT, blood pressure factor (BPF) by SBP & DBP, lipid metabolism factor (LMF) by TG & HDL-C, obesity condition factor (OCF) by BMI, and glucose metabolism factor (GMF) by FBG with the total contribution of 81.55% and 79.65% for males and females respectively. The proposed metabolic syndrome synthetic predictor (MSP) based predict model demonstrated good performance for predicting 5 years MetS with the AUC of 0.802 (95% CI 0.776-0.826) in males and 0.902 (95% CI 0.874-0.925) in females respectively, even after 10 fold cross validation, AUC was still enough high with 0.796 (95% CI 0.770-0.821) in males and 0.897 (95% CI 0.868-0.921) in females. More importantly, the MSP based risk matrix with a series of risk warning index provided a feasible and practical tool for visualization of risk assessment in the prediction of MetS. Conclusions MetS could be explained by six SLPs in Chinese urban Han population. The proposed MSP based predict model demonstrated good performance for predicting 5 years MetS, and the MetS-based matrix provided a feasible and practical tool. Abstract
Aim. To determine levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in different cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) modalities and to compare findings to some already investigated direct and indirect parameters of inflammation and atherosclerosis. Materials and Methods. Testing involved 114 examinees, divided into control and clinical groups suffering from different modalities and were formed according to the basis of a valid classification for CRS. Results. C-reactive protein (CRP) was significantly higher in all CRSs in comparison to the control group (P < 0.05). PAI-1 in CRSs was statistically higher than in the control group. IL-8 was increased in all CRSs, and especially in CRS-5, where no significance was found. PAI-1 correlated with IL-8 in all CRSs, with significant value in CRS-2 and CRS-5. Correlation for PAI-1 and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) was found in CRS-4, while IL-8 was found to be related to CRP level in all CRSs, with significance only in CRS-1 (P < 0.001). Conclusions. C-reactive protein, IL-8, and PAI-1 could be useful for clinical differentiation of chronic modalities of CRSs. Inflammation was the most pronounced in CRS-4. Lipid status parameters could be useful for differentiation of CRSs. Furthermore, HDL in chronic primary kidney diseases and triglycerides and total cholesterol in CRS-5 could be valuable.

Abstract
High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) has been witnessed to possess a range of different functions that contribute to its atheroprotective effects. These functions are: the promotion of macrophage cholesterol efflux, reverse cholesterol transport, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-apoptotic, pro-fibrinolytic and anti-oxidative functions. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an HDL associated enzyme esterase/homocysteinethiolactonase that contributes to the anti-oxidant and anti-atherosclerotic capabilities of HDL. PON1 is directly involved in the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis through the modulation of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. The aim of this review is to summarize the role of HDL on endothelial homeostasis, and also to describe the recently characterized molecular pathways involved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (METS) increases after the menopause; nevertheless, concomitant vascular, inflammatory and endothelial changes have not been completely elucidated. OBJECTIVE To measure serum markers of angiogenesis, inflammation and endothelial function in postmenopausal women screened for the METS. METHODS Serum of 100 postmenopausal women was analyzed for angiopoietin-2, interleukin-8 (IL-8), soluble FAS ligand (sFASL), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA). Comparisons were made in accordance to the presence or not of the METS and each of its components. Modified Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to define the METS. RESULTS Women with the METS (n=57) had similar age and time since menopause as compared to those without the syndrome (n=43). In general, women with the METS displayed a trend for higher levels of the analyzed markers. Nevertheless, only IL-6 levels were found to be significantly higher and uPA levels significantly lower among METS women as compared to those without the syndrome. When analyte levels were compared as to presenting or not each of the diagnostic features of the METS, it was found that IL-6 levels were higher among women with abdominal obesity, low HDL-C and high triglyceride levels. Women with low HDL-C and high triglyceride levels presented significantly lower uPA levels and those with high glucose and low HDL-C displayed significantly higher sCD40L levels. CONCLUSION Postmenopausal women with the METS in this sample displayed higher IL-6 (inflammation) and lower uPA levels (endothelial dysfunction). These were mainly related to metabolic and lipid abnormalities. More research is warranted in this regard.

Abstract
Background Although various cross-sectional studies have shown that erythrocyte parameters, including red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (HCT), were linked with metabolic syndrome (MetS), few longitudinal studies have been used to confirm their relationship. The study, therefore, constructed a large-scale longitudinal cohort in urban Chinese population to highlight and confirm the association between erythrocyte parameters and MetS/its components. Methods A longitudinal cohort with 6,453 participants was established based on the routine health check-up systems to follow up MetS, and Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) model was used to detect the association between erythrocyte parameters and MetS/its components (obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension). Results 287 MetS occurred over the four-year follow-up, leading to a total incidence density of 14.19 per 1,000 person-years (287/20218 person-years). Both RBC and Hb were strongly associated with MetS (RR/95% CI, P value; 3.016/1.525-5.967, 0.002 for RBC; 3.008/1.481-6.109, 0.002 for Hb), with their dose–response trends detected. All three erythrocyte parameters (RBC, Hb and HCT) were found to be associated with obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia with similar dose–response trends respectively, while only Hb showed a significant association with hyperglycemia. Conclusions Elevated erythrocyte parameters were confirmed to be associated with MetS/its components in urban Chinese population, suggesting that erythrocyte parameters might be served as a potential predictor for risk of MetS.
