Abstract
Background Inflammation is critically involved in the development of human cancer, and blood inflammatory biomarkers have been proposed to indicate the risk of different cancer types. Methods Using the Swedish Apolipoprotein-Related Mortality Risk (AMORIS) Cohort (N=812,073), we first performed a time-to-event analysis to evaluate the association of the baseline level of 12 blood inflammatory biomarkers measured during 1985-1996 with the subsequent risk of head and neck cancer (HNC) identified through the nationwide Swedish Cancer Register until end of 2020. A nested case-control study was further conducted to demonstrate the longitudinal trends of the studied biomarkers during the 30-year period prior to diagnosis of HNC. Results In the time-to-event analysis, we identified a total of 2,510 newly diagnosed HNC cases. There was an increased risk of HNC per standard deviation (SD) increase of haptoglobin (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-1.30), leukocytes (HR: 1.22; 95%CI: 1.17-1.28), sedimentation rate (HR: 1.17; 95%CI: 1.07-1.29), and monocytes (HR: 1.34; 95%CI: 1.07-1.68) at baseline, after adjustment for age, sex, fasting status, occupational status, and country of birth. In contrast, there was a decreased risk of HNC per SD increase of lymphocytes in % (HR: 0.85; 95%CI: 0.73-0.99) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) (HR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.69-0.95) at baseline. In the nested case-control study using repeatedly measured biomarker levels, we found that individuals with HNC had consistently higher levels of haptoglobin, leukocytes, sedimentation rate, and monocytes, as well as consistently lower levels of lymphocytes in % and LMR, during the 30-year period prior to diagnosis, compared to controls. Conclusion Based on a cohort of more than half a million participants with up to 35 years of follow-up, our findings provide solid evidence supporting the presence of alterations in blood inflammatory biomarkers during the decades before diagnosis of HNC.

Abstract
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate order (ESRO), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are hematological parameters that reflect the presence of biomarkers in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). This study evaluated the best haematological parameter in order to distinguish between EOC patients and healthy individuals. There were a total of 33 patients with EOC as subjects treated in Dr. Sardjito hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia and 32 volunteer subjects as controls. Curves of receiver operation, area under the curve, specificity, and sensitivity were estimated. To demonstrate EOC's presence, the ESRO was better than the hematological parameters of RDW, PLR, and NLR (AUC = 0.9245, 0.9010, 0.8351, and 0.7457, respectively; sensitivity and specificity = 83.3 and 90.6; 88.9 and 87.5; 100.0 and 68.8; and 94.4 and 53.1, respectively) at the cut-off points 1,125, 44.2, 163.2, and 2,551. Hence, ESRO is a better parameter to indicate the presence of EOC compared to RDW, PLR and NLR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolism (VTE) represents a considerable burden on cancer patients' survival and quality of life, but this burden varies based on the patient's baseline characteristics and cancer-related factors. Although solid evidence on the predictors and effect of VTE in cancer patients exists. AIM To evaluate VTE rate, morbidity, and mortality to develop parameters that could predict VTEs and their associated mortality in patients with multiple primary malignancies (MPMs). METHOD AND RESULTS This was a retrospective cohort study that took place at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Two hundred and forty-two patients with at least two biopsy-proven malignancies and had at least 3 months of follow-up after MPMs diagnosis were included. VTE was diagnosed in 14.5% of the cases, two-thirds of which were deep vein thrombosis. VTE was significantly associated with a higher mortality and worse survival. Predictors of VTE after MPMs diagnosis were a high ECOG performance status at MPMs diagnosis, a metastatic first primary malignancy, and ICU admission after MPMs diagnosis. Having a GI or hematological malignancy as the second primary malignancy, a high D-dimer at ICU admission, and palliative care referral were significantly associated with a higher mortality in patients who had VTE. CONCLUSION VTE was diagnosed in 14.5% of patients with MPMs and it significantly compromises their survival. We believe that these results might be of particular benefit since the phenomenon of MPMs is becoming more frequently encountered.

Abstract
Background
This study aims to investigate the relationship between preoperative erythrocyte sedimentation rate and survival in patients undergoing pulmonary resection due to lung cancer.
Methods
Between January 2011 and July 2017, a total of 575 patients (433 males, 142 females; mean age: 61.2±9.9 years; range, 29 to 82 years) who were operated due to primary lung cancer in our clinic were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were grouped according to erythrocyte sedimentation rate to analyze the relationship between erythrocyte sedimentation rate and survival.
Results
The mean overall survival time was 61.8±1.7 months in 393 patients with an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of ≤24 mm/h and 48.9±2.9 months in 182 patients with an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of ≥25 mm/h (p<0.001). Among the patients with Stage 1-2 disease, the mean survival time was 66.2±1.9 in patients with an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of ≤24 mm/h and 53.8±3.2 in patients with an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of ≥25 mm/h (p=0.008). The mean survival time in patients with adenocarcinoma was 62.4±2.4 months in patients with ≤24 mm/h erythrocyte sedimentation rate and 46.1±4.6 months in patients with ≥25 mm/h erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p=0.003).
Conclusion
The relationship between elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and poor prognosis in patients with the same stage of the disease is promising for the use of erythrocyte sedimentation rate as a prognostic marker.

Abstract
AIM To assess the relationship between nutritional status and inflammatory markers of breast cancer patients, and to identify predictors of malnutrition in these patients. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 45 patients with breast cancer assessed between January and June 2018. Nutritional status was evaluated by objective and subjective methods. The inflammatory markers and inflammation-based scores evaluated were C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), CRP/albumin ratio, and Albumin/CRP ratio. RESULTS A total of 45 patients were evaluated. Majority of the patients have high levels of both CRP and ESR (73.3% and 86.7% respectively). More than 70% of the patients were well nourished. There was no significant association between CRP (P = 0.067), ESR (P = 0.094) and SGA (Subjective Global Assessment) categories. Albumin (P < 0.001), Albumin/CRP ratio (P = 0.002), CRP/albumin ratio (P = < 0.001), and GPS (P < 0.001) were significantly associated with SGA categories. On multivariate analysis, albumin (P < 0.001), Albumin/CRP ratio (P = 0.004), CRP/albumin ratio (P = 0.009), GPS (P = 0.01), and ECOG (P = 0.009) were the only markers independently related to malnutrition. CONCLUSION The inflammation-based scores were significantly associated with malnutrition and can be used as biochemical nutritional assessment tools in cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND T-box transcription factor protein 21 (TBX21) is expressed in immune cells and some tumor cells. Defects in TBX21 gene can cause Th1/Th2 imbalance, which is closely related to tumorigenesis. The expression and clinical value of TBX21 in skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) are not clear. MATERIAL AND METHODS RNA-Seq expression and clinical information were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases. Wilcoxon signed-rank test and logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between TBX21 expression and clinical parameters such as gender, stage, etc. The correlation between clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival of SKCM patients was estimated by Cox regression and the Kaplan-Meier method. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) were conducted to analyze the potential mechanism of TBX21 in the progression of SKCM. RESULTS Compared with normal samples, TBX21 was significantly upregulated in SKCM tissues. SKCM patients with lower TBX21 expression might have a worse prognosis than those with higher TBX21 expression according to Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Cox analysis also reached the same conclusion: TBX21 was an independent prognostic indicator. GSEA showed that the highly expressed phenotypes in TBX21 were enriched to varying degrees with various signaling pathways. PPI network showed the top 10 proteins that were closely related to TBX21. CONCLUSIONS TBX21 expression was significantly correlated with the prognosis of SKCM patients and was found to be involved in a great many immunological pathways that affect the occurrence and development of tumors.

Abstract
Aim: Malignant melanoma is the most frequent skin cancer in children and adolescents. It comprises 1–3% of all malignancies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical aspects, histopathologic features, and treatment outcomes of our patients with malignant melanoma. Material and Methods: Patients aged <15 years who were treated between 2003 and 2018 for malignant melanoma were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Seventeen patients (10 females, 7 males), with a median age of 7 years (range, 7 months-13 years) were evaluated. Five patients had congenital melanocytic nevi. All had cutaneous melanoma except one with mucosal (conjunctival) melanoma. The most frequent primary tumor site was the lower extremities (35%). Sentinel lymphoscintigraphy, sentinel node biopsy, and PET/CT were performed as the staging procedures at initial diagnosis. Localized disease was present in eight patients; nine had regional lymph node metastasis. The only treatment was surgery in localized disease; surgery and adjuvant interferon treatment was given in patients with regional lymph node metastasis. Three developed distant metastasis (bone, lung, brain) at a median of 9 months. A three-year-old patient received a BRAF inhibitor (vemurafenib), and a 13-year-old patient received a check point inhibitor (ipilimumab); both died of progressive disease. The median follow-up for all patients was 25 months. The 5-year overall survival was 76.6%. Conclusion: Although malignant melanoma is rare in children, prognosis is good if diagnosed early. Physicians should be aware of skin lesions and full-layer biopsy should be obtained in suspicious skin lesions. Patients with congenital melanocytic nevi should also be followed up cautiously.

Abstract
Background: Inflammation represents a pivotal role in the progression of cervical cancer. The hematological markers of inflammation in complete blood count (CBC) panel are potentially useful in determining the prognosis of the disease. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate whether the pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) could be used as in predicting the stage of cervical cancer. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study involving 282 patients with cervical cancer was enrolled at Sanglah General Hospital for five years (2013-2017). The histopathological records and complete blood counts (CBC) of the patients were collected and analyzed using SPSS ver. 16 software. FIGO stage I–II and III-IV were classified as early and advance stage respectively. Results: The median NLR and PLR were significantly higher in the advance stage compared with early stage (7.58 (1.36-33.20) and 247.89 (97.10-707.11); p-value = 0.001). A strong positive correlation was found between the staging of cervical cancer and NLR (r=0.638) and PLR (r=0.668). The AUC, sensitivity, and specificity value of NLR and PLR were 0.803 (82%; 71%) and 0.716 (72%; 70%). Advanced stage of cervical cancer was found in high NLR (adjusted OR: 9.02; 95%CI=2.42-33.64; p=0.001) and PLR (adjusted OR = 2.47; 95% CI = 1.45-4.85; p = 0.032). Conclusion: Increased pretreatment NLR and PLR values may provide a useful information in predicting the staging of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Biomarkers to distinguish patients with advanced melanoma responsive to nivolumab are of great interest. Therefore, we examined the possibility that laboratory data of daily blood examination become novel biomarkers. Laboratory data of 16 melanoma patients who were treated with nivolumab were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were classified as responder group or non-responder group. Examined were: white blood cell count (WBC), absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute monocyte count (AMC), absolute eosinophil count (AEC), and absolute basophil count (ABC), as well as levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), one hour value of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and 5-S-cysteinydopa (5-S-CD). Responder group showed significantly higher baseline levels of ESR or CRP and significantly lower ALC level before nivolumab treatment. Additionally, nivolumab treatment decreased the levels of CRP, ESR, and ANC, while it increased ALC level in the responder group. CRP was the most effective in distinguishing responder group from non-responder group both before and during treatment, according to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. We firstly showed that ESR is also the baseline biomarker of the efficacy of nivolumab. Furthermore, we confirmed that CRP is useful to predict the efficacy both before and during the treatment, and suggested that CRP is the most effective biomarker among daily blood examination by using ROC curve analysis. There is a possibility that nivolumab treatment may be more effective for malignant melanoma with stronger inflammation.
