Non-native plant drives the spatial dynamics of its herbivores: the case of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) in Europe

The North American gall mite Aceria fraxiniflora was first recorded in Europe in southeast Hungary in 2017. Since then, it has shown a remarkably rapid spread on its host, the also North American green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica). By the beginning of 2023 it has been recorded in eight Central-Eastern European countries. In 2022 it was recorded on the other North American ash (Fraxinus Americana) in Zagreb (Croatia) and in Szarvas Arboretum (SE Hungary). Possible reasons and outcomes of this spread are discussed.

Historical plant introductions predict current insect invasions

Thousands of insect species have been introduced outside of their native ranges, and some of them strongly impact ecosystems and human societies. Because a large fraction of insects feed on or are associated with plants, nonnative plants provide habitat and resources for invading insects, thereby facilitating their establishment. Furthermore, plant imports represent one of the main pathways for accidental nonnative insect introductions. Here, we tested the hypothesis that plant invasions precede and promote insect invasions. We found that geographical variation in current nonnative insect flows was best explained by nonnative plant flows dating back to 1900 rather than by more recent plant flows. Interestingly, nonnative plant flows were a better predictor of insect invasions than potentially confounding socioeconomic variables. Based on the observed time lag between plant and insect invasions, we estimated that the global insect invasion debt consists of 3,442 region-level introductions, representing a potential increase of 35% of insect invasions. This debt was most important in the Afrotropics, the Neotropics, and Indomalaya, where we expect a 10 to 20-fold increase in discoveries of new nonnative insect species. Overall, our results highlight the strong link between plant and insect invasions and show that limiting the spread of nonnative plants might be key to preventing future invasions of both plants and insects.

Taxonomic Delineation of the Old World Species Stomphastis thraustica (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) Feeding on Jatropha gossypiifolia (Euphorbiaceae) that Was Collected in the New World and Imported as a Biocontrol Agent to Australia

We provide the identification and species delineation of this biocontrol agent as Stomphastis thraustica (Meyrick in Trans Ent Soc Lond 80(1):107-120, 1908) belonging to the family Gracillariidae. We clarify the distribution pattern of S. thraustica, its host plant preferences, and present taxonomic and molecular diagnoses based on original morphological and genetic data as well as data retrieved from historic literature and genetic databases. Following our own collecting efforts in three continents Africa, South America, and Australia as well as our study of historic museum collection material, we present many new distribution records of S. thraustica for countries and territories in the world including the new discovery of this species in the Neotropical region and we report its introduction in Australia as a biocontrol agent. Using mitogenomic and COI gene data, we clarified that the closest relative of S. thraustica is Stomphastis sp. that occurs in Madagascar and Australia and feeds on the same host plant as S. thraustica - Jatropha gossypiifolia L. (Euphorbiaceae). The molecular sequence divergence in the mitochondrial DNA barcode fragment between these two closely related species S. thraustica and Stomphastis sp. is over 5.7% supporting that they are different species.

Drivers of invasion by laurel wilt of redbay and sassafras in the southeastern US

CONTEXT

Timely responses to mitigate economic and environmental impacts from invading species are facilitated by knowledge of the speed and drivers of invasions.

OBJECTIVE

Quantify changes in invasion patterns through time and factors that governed time-to-invasion by laurel wilt, one of the most damaging, non-native disturbance agents invading forests of the United States.

METHODS

We analyzed county-level occurrence data (2004-2021) for laurel wilt across the southeastern United States. A Cox proportional hazards modeling framework was used to elucidate drivers of invasion.

RESULTS

As of 2021, laurel wilt had been detected in 275 counties and made 72 discrete jumps (averaging 164 km ± 16 SE) into counties that did not share a border with a previously invaded county. Spread decelerated from 40 km/yr to 24 km/yr after 5 years, with a marked decline in the number of counties invaded in 2021 (16) compared with 2020 (33). The Cox proportional hazards model indicated that proxies for anthropogenic movement and habitat invasibility increased invasion risk.

CONCLUSION

The recent decline in number of counties invaded could be due to disruptions to travel and/or surveys from the coronavirus pandemic, but exhaustion of the most suitable habitat, such as counties in the southeastern US with warm annual temperatures and high densities of host trees, could have also contributed to this trend. This work suggests that without a shift in spread driven by additional insect vectors, that rates of range expansion by laurel wilt might have peaked in 2020 and could continue decelerating.

Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Robinia pseudoacacia Depending on the Origin of Different Geographic Provenances

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is recognised as a forest species of interest due to its multiple uses. The management of forest genetic resources and their efficient conservation suffer from variations in traits and start with seed germination. The aim of the current study was to investigate the germination of seeds obtained from plus trees selected in eight Romanian provenances, as well as to investigate the influence of the origin upon plants’ growth and development. Two experiments were undertaken to test seed germination: one treatment involved water-soaked seeds and heat/cold treatment, while the other treatment was based on sulphuric acid, at different concentrations (50, 70, 90%). The results were correlated with the morphological analysis of the seeds. Satu-Mare had the lowest germination rate within both treatments. Sulphuric acid did not improve seed germination as much as the heat treatment. The highest germination rate occurred for the water and temperature treatment on seeds from Bihor provenance (68.2%). The most distant provenance was Bihor, in inverse correlation with Bistrița Năsăud and grouped separately within the hierarchical dendrogram of cluster analysis based on the analysed parameters of the provenances investigated. The results demonstrated that the genotypes and environmental heterogeneity of the seed origin within the provenances may finally result in different performances.
