Abstract
The acute effects of exercise can elucidate the molecular and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying exercise's benefits in several systems (e.g., the brain, muscle, and bone). In this study, a single 30-minute session of high-intensity interval aerobic exercise (HIIAE) administered in conjunction with isometric resistance exercise on a whole-body vibration (WBV) platform (HIIAE+WBV) was compared with HIIAE alone in their effects on molecular and neurocognitive indices among 63 sedentary, healthy postmenopausal women who were randomly assigned to HIIAE (n = 20), HIIAE+WBV (n = 20), and Control (n = 23) groups. The assessed molecular indices were serum levels of osteocalcin (OC), uncarboxylated OC (ucOC), carboxylated OC (cOC), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and irisin, and the assessed neurocognitive indices were the accuracy rate (AR), reaction time (RT), and electroencephalography event-related potentials (ERPs) of P2 and P3 components in a visuospatial working memory task. Data on these indices before versus after an acute bout of HIIAE or HIIAE+WBV or after a resting session were compared. An HIIAE or HIIAE+WBV intervention yielded no significant change in ERP P2 latency/amplitude and P3 latency but yielded significantly higher ARs, shorter RTs, larger ERP P3 amplitudes, and higher OC, cOC, BDNF, and irisin levels in the postmenopausal women. HIIAE+WBV outperformed HIIAE alone in AR, ucOC, and BDNF. However, the changes in these molecular and neurocognitive indices induced by the two exercise modes did not show any significant correlations in the present study. The present findings suggest that HIIAE and HIIAE+WBV have the potential to acutely influence markers of bone and brain health, with HIIAE+WBV showing greater effectiveness than HIIAE alone. These interventions should be further investigated in future randomized controlled trials involving postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Menopause is an important period of life for women, all of whom experience this natural state. However, awareness of the bodily changes during this period is of great significance. Hence, not paying attention to the dietary, physical, and psychological criteria can reduce the quality of women’s lives. This study aimed to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL), body composition, and physical fitness in postmenopausal women after Pilates exercises. Thirty postmenopausal Iranian women were randomly divided into Pilates (performed for 8 weeks) and control groups. The HRQoL Questionnaire (SF-12) was filled out, and a three-day record of food intake was also kept for dietary assessment. The diet of the women consisted of mean values of 1,923 Kcal daily energy, 16% protein, 72% carbohydrate, 12% fat, and 11.32 mg iron. Calcium, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin E intake were respectively 73, 87.5, 81.7 and 83.53% of the recommended daily allowance. Pilates exercises had a significant effect on flexibility (P=0.002), endurance (P=0.001), muscle strength (P=0.001), body mass index (P=0.001), lean mass (P=0.003), body fat percentage (P=0.001), and quality of life (P=0.001). Therefore, Pilates is an appropriate training to increase body fitness and improve body composition, lean mass, and quality of life in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Epigenetic changes have been shown to be associated with both aging process and aging-related diseases. There is evidence regarding the benefits of physical activity on the functionality, cognition, and quality of life of institutionalized older adults, however, the molecular mechanisms involved are not elucidated. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effects of a multimodal exercise intervention on functional outcomes, cognitive performance, quality of life (QOL), epigenetic markers and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels among institutionalized older adult individuals. Participants (n = 8) without dementia who were aged 73.38 ± 11.28 years and predominantly female (87.5%) were included in this quasi-experimental pilot study. A multimodal exercise protocol (cardiovascular capacity, strength, balance/agility and flexibility, perception and cognition) consisted of twice weekly sessions (60 minutes each) over 8 weeks. Balance (Berg Scale), mobility (Timed Up and Go test), functional capacity (Six-Minute Walk test), cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination) and QOL (the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Scale questionnaire) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Blood sample (15 mL) was also collected before and after intervention for analysis of biomarkers global histone H3 acetylation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels. Significant improvements were observed in cognitive function, balance, mobility, functional capacity and QOL after the intervention. In addition, a tendency toward an increase in global histone H3 acetylation levels was observed, while brain-derived neurotrophic factor level remained unchanged. This study provided evidence that an 8-week multimodal exercise protocol has a significant effect on ameliorating functional outcomes and QOL in institutionalized older adult individuals. In addition, it was also able to promote cognitive improvement, which seems to be partially related to histone hyperacetylation status.
