Monoethanolamine Wastewater Treatment via Adsorption Method: A Study on Comparison of Chitosan, Activated Carbon, Alum and Zeolite

Catalytic ozonation of N-methyldiethanolamine over mixed oxides derived from Mg/Fe-LDH

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of catalytic ozonation to increase the degradation of aqueous N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solutions, using two lamellar double hydroxides, namely Mg_xFe-LDH with x = Mg/Fe = 2, 3, were synthesized by the simple and rapid co-precipitation method. Then, the obtained materials were calcined at 400 °C for 6 h. The calcined products were respectively designated as HTcMg₂Fe and HTcMg₃Fe, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ physisorption (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The powders produced were used in the ozonation reaction to remove MDEA from aqueous solutions. Experimental results showed that the highest MDEA removal efficiency is in the catalytic ozonation process. Under the optimal conditions for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of MDEA: initial concentration of 4 Wt% MDEA, 30 °C, catalyst mass of 30 mg/100 ml solution, and contact time of 60 min. The results showed the highest percentage of COD removal, which was up to 80.76% for HTcMg₂Fe higher than that of HTcMg₃Fe 80.36%.

Bioadhesive Nanoparticles for Local Drug Delivery

Local drug delivery is an effective strategy for achieving direct and instant therapeutic effects. Current clinical treatments have fallen short and are limited by traditional technologies. Bioadhesive nanoparticles (NPs), however, may be a promising carrier for optimized local drug delivery, offering prolonged drug retention time and steadily maintained therapeutic concentrations. In addition, the possibility of clinical applications of this platform are abundant, as most polymers used for bioadhesion are both biodegradable and biocompatible. This review highlights the major advances in the investigations of polymer-based bioadhesive nanoparticles and their innumerable applications in local drug delivery.

Sorption of water alkalinity and hardness from high-strength wastewater on bifunctional activated carbon: process optimization, kinetics and equilibrium studies

Sorption optimization and mechanism of hardness and alkalinity on bifunctional empty fruit bunch-based powdered activation carbon (PAC) were studied. The PAC possessed both high surface area and ion-exchange properties, and it was utilized in the treatment of biotreated palm oil mill effluent. Batch adsorption experiments designed with Design Expert(®) were conducted in correlating the singular and interactive effects of the three adsorption parameters: PAC dosage, agitation speed and contact time. The sorption trends of the two contaminants were sequentially assessed through a full factorial design with three factor interaction models and a central composite design with polynomial models of quadratic order. Analysis of variance revealed the significant factors on each design response with very high R(2) values indicating good agreement between model and experimental values. The optimum operating conditions of the two contaminants differed due to their different regions of operating interests, thus necessitating the utility of desirability factor to get consolidated optimum operation conditions. The equilibrium data for alkalinity and hardness sorption were better represented by the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the adsorption rates and behavior better. It was concluded that chemisorption contributed majorly to the adsorption process.
