Predictors of diabetes risk perception among college students

Objective: To explore the diabetes knowledge and future disease risk perception of college students. Participants: 697 college students were purposefully recruited at a large state university and completed an online survey. Methods: Diabetes knowledge, future disease risk perception, lifestyle, and demographic factors were assessed. Results: The majority of students (56%) reported a family history of diabetes but perceived their diabetes risk as low/moderate (90%). Logistic regression indicated higher knowledge (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01-1.13), age (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.00-1.16), bodymassindex (BMI) (OR, 4.90; 95% CI, 2.33-10.30) and family history of diabetes (OR, 4.30; 95% CI, 1.97-9.40) increased perception of future diabetes risk. Those who self-rated their health as good/excellent and read food labels regularly/often had lower perceived future risk of diabetes. Conclusions: Results highlight the importance of educating college students on diabetes risk factors as well as primary/secondary prevention for reducing diabetes incidence in this age group.

Health-promoting behaviors and psychosocial well-being of university students in Hong Kong

The objective of this study was to examine health-promoting behaviors and psychosocial well-being of university students in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sample (n = 247) of students recruited at various locations on campus. The Chinese version of the Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II; S. Walker, K. Sechrist, & N. Pender, 1995) was given to students as a questionnaire. Relatively few university students had a sense of "health responsibility" (6.5-27.1%), engaged in any form of physical activity (31.2%), or exercised regularly (13.8%). Less than half ate fruits (35.2%) and vegetables (48.9%) every day. Positive personal growth was reported by 50.6% of the students; 42.5% used stress-management skills and 74.1% rated their interpersonal relationships as meaningful and fulfilling. Students' scores on the health responsibility, nutritional habits, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, or stress-management subscales of the HPLP-II did not differ significantly by gender, but males scored better than females (p = 0.001) on the physical exercise subscale. This study provides information on gender differences and specific needs of students which can help university administrators, curriculum planners, and community health professionals design guidelines for structuring a healthier environment and developing health education programs that support healthy choices among university students.

Students and Senior Citizens Learning from Each Other

A service learning experience in a senior citizen center was planned for first-quarter associate-degree nursing students at a university. Activities were planned that would benefit both student learning and senior citizen health and well-being. Students had the opportunity to interact with well elderly adults before dealing with ill or frail elderly adults, thus preventing the formation of some negative attitudes about elderly individuals. Students practiced interviewing, using observational skills and taking blood pressures in a relaxed environment. Benefits to the senior citizens included having their blood pressure checked and learning about home safety and nutrition. Interactions made the senior citizens feel valued. Evaluation of the experience was positive from the students', senior citizens', faculty's, and center director's perspective. As a result, this service learning experience has been incorporated into the nursing curriculum for the university.

Theoretical Foundations of Service-Learning in Nursing Education

Although somewhat new to nursing, service-learning has had a long history of development. To be successful, a service-learning program must have institutional support, interested faculty and motivated students, potential for strong community partnerships, and an ongoing orientation and development component. Reflection is an important link between the service students perform and the learning outcomes of that service.

"Enter to learn, go forth to serve": service learning in nursing education

The Pew Health Professions Commission (1998) has recommended community-based service learning as an integral part of nursing education. Service learning activities in a baccalaureate nursing program with an integrated curricular model are described with a women's health elective used as one example of the integration of service learning with clinical experiences. Based on clinical journal entries, students identified benefits of service learning including (1) a sense of personal satisfaction, (2) professional growth, (3) a higher level of critical thinking skills, (4) preparation for nursing practice in a dynamic and diverse health care delivery system, and (5) an increased awareness of unmet needs in clients, families, communities, and populations. Students are truly engaged because they have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts in giving service, creating a "capacity for connectedness," and learning social responsibility as professionals.
