Abstract
AIM To systematically evaluate the effect of smoking cessation training on nursing students' learning outcomes. DESIGN This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022373280). METHODS Ten electronic English and Chinese databases were searched to identify articles on nursing students' smoking cessation training from inception to October 2022. Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument was used to assess the methodological quality of eligible studies. RESULTS Twelve moderate methodological quality studies (three randomized controlled trials and nine quasi-experimental studies) with 2114 undergraduate nursing students were included. Teaching strategies included didactic lectures, collaborative learning, blended learning and the service-learning approach. Eight studies showed that the training significantly increased nursing students' knowledge of smoking cessation (p < 0.05) and three of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.83-1.31). Seven studies showed that training enhanced students' attitudes/motivation towards smoking cessation interventions significantly (p < 0.05) and two of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 1.11-1.84). Nine studies reported that students' self-efficacy improved significantly after training (p < 0.05) and six of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.98-2.18). Two one-group pre-post studies showed training significantly improved students' practice of 5 A's behavior (p < 0.05), with a small effect size (Cohen's d < 0.50). CONCLUSIONS This review showed that smoking cessation training had a positive and large effect on undergraduate nursing students' knowledge, attitudes/motivation and self-efficacy towards smoking cessation intervention, but the effect of changing the practice of 5 A's was modest. We noted that very few RCTs were done and most studies only used subjective measures. More robust experimental studies with long-term follow-up are warranted in evaluating nursing students' practice/behavior of smoking cessation intervention and patients' quitting outcomes. Blended and collaborative learning are recommended in smoking cessation education.

Abstract
Background Tobacco use is undertreated in the medical setting. One driver may be inadequate tobacco use disorder treatment (TUDT) training for clinicians in specialties treating tobacco-dependent patients. Objective We sought to evaluate the current state of TUDT training for diverse professionals and how these skills are assessed in credentialing exams. Methods We performed a focused review of current educational practices, evidence-based strategies, and accreditation exam contents focused on TUDT. Results Among medical students, participants in reviewed studies reported anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours of TUDT training throughout their 4-year programs, most often in the form of didactic sessions. Similarly, little TUDT training was reported at the post-graduate (residency, fellowship, continuing medical education) levels, and reported training was typically delivered as time-based (expected hours of instruction) rather than competency-based (demonstration of mastery) learning. Multiple studies evaluated effective TUDT curricula at varied stages of training. More effective curricula incorporated longitudinal sessions and active learning, such as standardized patient encounters or proctored patient visits. Knowledge of TUDT is minimally evaluated on certification exams. For example, the American Board of Internal Medicine blueprint lists TUDT as <2% of one subtopic on both the internal medicine and pulmonary exams. Conclusion TUDT training for most clinicians is minimal, does not assess competency, and is minimally evaluated on certification exams. Effective, evidence-based TUDT training incorporating active learning should be integrated into medical education at all levels, with attention paid to inclusion on subsequent certifying exams.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because tobacco use is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, it is essential to prepare health care providers to assist patients with quitting smoking. Created in 1999, the "Rx for Change" tobacco cessation curriculum was designed to fill an educational gap in cessation training of health professional students. In 2004, a website was launched to host teaching materials and tools to support the efforts of educators and clinicians. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to characterize users and utilization of a website hosting shared teaching materials over a period of 15 years. METHODS Data from the Rx for Change website have been collected prospectively since its inception. In this study, end-user data were analyzed to determine user characteristics, how they heard about the website, intended use of the materials, and numbers of logins and file downloads over time. RESULTS Total number of website registrants was 15,576, representing all 50 states in the United States and 94 countries. The most represented discipline was pharmacy (6393/15,505, 41.2%), and nearly half of users were students or residents. The most common source of referral to the website was a faculty member or colleague (33.4%, 2591/7758), and the purpose of enhancing personal knowledge and skills was the most commonly cited intended use of the curricular materials. A total of 259,835 file downloads occurred during the 15-year period, and the most commonly downloaded file type was ancillary handouts. CONCLUSIONS The Rx for Change website demonstrated sustained use, providing immediate access to tobacco cessation teaching and practice tools for educators and clinicians over the first 15 years of its existence. The website has a broad interprofessional reach, and the consistent utilization over time and large number of downloads provide evidence for the feasibility and utility of a public-access website hosting teaching materials. The shared curriculum approach averts the need for educators to create their own materials for teaching tobacco cessation to students in the health professions.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review to examine the effectiveness of tobacco dependence education versus usual or no tobacco dependence education on entry-level health professional student practice and client smoking cessation. Sixteen published databases, seven grey literature databases/websites, publishers’ websites, books, and pertinent reference lists were searched. Studies from 16 health professional programs yielded 28 RCTs with data on 4343 healthcare students and 3122 patients. Two researchers independently assessed articles and abstracted data about student knowledge, self-efficacy, performance of tobacco cessation interventions, and patient smoking cessation. All forms of tobacco were included. We did not find separate interventions for different kinds of tobacco such as pipes or flavoured tobacco. We computed effect sizes using a random-effects model and applied meta-analytic procedures to 13 RCTs that provided data for meta-analysis. Students’ counseling skills increased significantly following the 5As model (SMD = 1.03; 95% CI 0.07, 1.98; p < 0.00001, I2 94%; p = 0.04) or motivational interviewing approach (SMD = 0.90, 95% CI 0.59, 1.21; p = 0.68, I2 0%; p < 0.00001). With tobacco dependence counseling, 78 more patients per 1000 (than control) reported quitting at 6 months (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.49, 2.74, I2 = 0%, p = 0.76; p < 0.00001), although the strength of evidence was moderate or low. Student tobacco cessation counseling improved guided by the above models, active learning strategies, and practice with standardized patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use is the primary preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, resulting in enormous health care expenditures. The burden of smoking is higher among disadvantaged populations, such as individuals with mental illness. As the largest group of health care providers, nurses must assume a leading role in tobacco control efforts to decrease the deleterious impact on health outcomes. METHOD Investigators used a randomized control group design to assess the effectiveness of a theory-based tobacco education program on the perceived competence and intrinsic motivation of prelicensure BSN students (N = 134) to engage in cessation interventions with patients with mental illness. RESULTS Students completing the program reported a significant increase in perceived competence, compared with their peers who received standard instruction only. Intrinsic motivation did not increase significantly for either group. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that the program improves students' perceived competence, but further research is needed to determine its effect on motivation and its usefulness in other health care contexts. Abstract
Persons living with a mental illness represent an especially vulnerable and disadvantaged subgroup of smokers. Compared to those in the general population, they smoke more, die younger, and suffer disproportionately from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, all diseases and conditions directly associated with, and exacerbated by, smoking. Despite strong evidence that tobacco cessation counseling by a health professional can approximately double patients' odds of quitting, clinicians across disciplines are reluctant to offer these individuals effective means by which to quit smoking. This disinclination is due, at least in part, to inadequate tobacco cessation training during degree education. The purpose of this qualitative study was to assess undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of a tobacco education intervention. Findings support the integration of tobacco education into undergraduate nursing curricula.

Abstract
Tobacco dependence is a major health problem for persons with a serious mental illness (SMI). Nurses working with psychiatric clients often lack the knowledge, ability, and confidence to offer their clients meaningful, effective help to quit smoking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a tobacco education program on the perceived competence and motivation of baccalaureate nursing students (BSN) to intervene with SMI clients who use tobacco. The education program significantly improved the competence and motivation of BSN students to deliver cessation interventions to this vulnerable population of smokers.

Abstract
Introduction : Les infirmières qui ont reçu une formation en cessation tabagique ont tendance à intervenir davantage auprès des fumeurs que celles qui n’ont pas été formées. Il est démontré qu’une intervention même très brève conduit à une diminution de la prévalence du tabagisme. Or, les programmes qui préparent à l’exercice de la profession infirmière laissent actuellement peu de place à la formation en cessation tabagique. Les objectifs de la recherche sont de décrire les pratiques d’enseignement de la cessation tabagique dans les programmes de formation infirmière et de comparer en tenant compte de la formation en cessation tabagique reçue par les professeures. Méthodologie : Un devis descriptif-comparatif a été choisi. Résultats : Au total, 278 professeures (20,8 %) ont répondu à un sondage en ligne effectué à l’aide d’un questionnaire validé. Celles-ci avouent offrir en moyenne une heure en cessation tabagique par année. Les aspects physiopathologiques sont couverts au détriment de l’intervention professionnelle en cessation tabagique. Les obstacles identifiés par les professeures sont le manque de temps, de connaissances et de pertinence avec le cours enseigné. Seulement 11,9 % des sujets mentionnent avoir reçu une formation spécifique en cessation tabagique. Or ce sont ces dernières qui enseignent davantage d’éléments reliés à l’intervention en cessation tabagique. Conclusion : Une meilleure intégration de l’intervention en promotion de la santé, incluant la cessation tabagique, dans la formation initiale devrait amener la future infirmière à réaliser davantage d’interventions personnalisées en cessation tabagique.

Abstract
Smoking cessation strategies are barely discussed in nursing education programs, even though initial education shapes how future professionals practice their profession. The aim of this research is to describe the practices, attitudes, and beliefs of nursing educators of Quebec with regard to smoking cessation strategies in initial nursing education. A descriptive design was chosen along with an online questionnaire. A total of 278 educators (20.8%) participated in the survey. Although educators recognize the importance of incorporating smoking cessation strategies into their teaching practice, they allocate an average of only one hour per year to the topic. Tobacco use is addressed mostly in terms of risk factors, with little focus on how to help patients quit. The perceived obstacles are related to false beliefs and a lack of knowledge. The results of this study demonstrate the need to raise educators’ awareness of the importance of incorporating smoking cessation strategies into classroom teaching.

Abstract
Tobacco use and dependence is a serious public health issue that disproportionately affects the mentally ill client population. Mental health professionals, including psychiatric/mental health advanced practice nurses (PMHAPNs), are disinclined to integrate tobacco cessation interventions into their practice, due in part, to a general lack of tobacco-related knowledge (C. Essenmacher, C. Karvonen-Gutierrez, J. Lynch-Sauer, & S. A., Duffy, 2008; A. J. Molina, T. Fernandez, D. Fernandez, M. Delgado, S. de Abajo, & V. Martin, 2012; L. Sarna, L. L. Danao, S. Chan, S. Shin, L. Baldago, E. Endo, & M. E. Wewers, 2006); D. Sharp, S. Blaakman, R. Cole, & J. Evinger, 2009). This paper provides an in-depth literature review of tobacco education in nursing curricula and proposes the systematic integration of theory-based tobacco content into psychiatric/mental health graduate nursing programs.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The purpose of this study was to examine an evidence-based smoking cessation education program effect on nursing students' perceptions and self-confidence to help smokers quit smoking. METHOD Upon completion of an on-line educational program students were provided opportunities to practice through simulation. Data were collected by pre and post assessment tools for the online-education and by a post assessment tool for the simulation. RESULTS 110 senior nursing students participated in this study. Students' confidence in their overall ability to assist smokers to quit smoking was statistically significant compared to baseline (t=4.09, p<.001). Students self-rated higher levels of smoking cessation skills on Advising, Assessing, Assisting, and Arranging compared to baseline (p<0.00). CONCLUSION Integration of evidence-based didactic and practical smoking cessation program into curricula improves nursing students' clinical skills in helping smokers to quit.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effectiveness of a tobacco control course on the improvement of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about smoking among health sciences' students. METHODS This was a quasi-experimental study of community intervention carried out during the years 2005-2008, at 2 university health science centres in northwest Spain. A total of 290 students on the intervention and 256 on the control campus took part in the study. The intervention consisted of a course on the prevention and control of tobacco use offered only on the intervention campus. Data were collected before the intervention and 6 months afterwards. RESULTS After the course, significant differences between groups were observed in the improvement of knowledge, attitudes and perceived ability to act in tobacco control. CONCLUSIONS The introduction of training concerning smoking through active methodologies had a positive impact on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about tobacco of students.
