Use of municipal, agricultural, industrial, construction and demolition waste in thermal and sound building insulation materials: a review article

Production and usage of green and sustainable building materials realizes the desire to integrate more biodegradable, natural, recycled, and renewable resources into the construction industry. The aim is to replace traditionally available construction industry materials due to their environmental impacts through air emissions and waste generation. An observed trend is the production of insulation materials by recycling of industrial, agriculture, construction and demolition (C&D), and municipal solid wastes, thus reducing the environmental burdens of these wastes. While thermal insulation is important in saving energy, sound insulation has drawn much attention in recent years. There are various waste materials that have good thermal and sound properties, enabling effective replacement of traditional materials. This review investigates the use of industrial, agricultural, C&D, and municipal solid wastes to produce innovative thermal and acoustic insulating building materials. The performance of these insulating materials, and the influence of several materials parameters (density, thermal conductivity, sound absorption coefficient) on thermal and acoustic performance are reported after a brief description of each material.

Selective classification and quantification model of C&D waste from material resources consumed in residential building construction

The unfortunate economic situation involving Spain and the European Union is, among other factors, the result of intensive construction activity over recent years. The excessive consumption of natural resources, together with the impact caused by the uncontrolled dumping of untreated C&D waste in illegal landfills have caused environmental pollution and a deterioration of the landscape. The objective of this research was to generate a selective classification and quantification model of C&D waste based on the material resources consumed in the construction of residential buildings, either new or renovated, namely the Conventional Constructive Model (CCM). A practical example carried out on ten residential buildings in Seville, Spain, enabled the identification and quantification of the C&D waste generated in their construction and the origin of the waste, in terms of the building material from which it originated and its impact for every m(2) constructed. This model enables other researchers to establish comparisons between the various improvements proposed for the minimization of the environmental impact produced by building a CCM, new corrective measures to be proposed in future policies that regulate the production and management of C&D waste generated in construction from the design stage to the completion of the construction process, and the establishment of sustainable management for C&D waste and for the selection of materials for the construction on projected or renovated buildings.

Recycled blocks with improved sound and fire insulation containing construction and demolition waste

The environmental problem posed by construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) is derived not only from the high volume produced, but also from its treatment and disposal. Treatment plants receive C&D waste which is then transformed into a recycled mixed aggregate. The byproduct is mainly used for low-value-added applications such as land escape restoration, despite the high quality of the aggregate. In the present work, the chemical composition properties and grading curve properties of these aggregates are defined. Furthermore, the resulting recycled concrete with a high proportion of recycled composition, from 20% to 100% replacement of fine and coarse aggregate, is characterized physically and mechanically. An environmental study of the new construction material when all aggregates are substituted by C&D waste shows a low toxicity level, similar to that of other construction materials. The new material also has improved properties with respect to standard concrete such as high fire resistance, good heat insulation, and acoustic insulation.
