Automatic detection method of epileptic seizures based on IRCMDE and PSO-SVM

Multi-scale dispersion entropy (MDE) has been widely used to extract nonlinear features of electroencephalography (EEG) signals and realize automatic detection of epileptic seizures. However, information loss and poor robustness will exist when MDE is used to measure the nonlinear complexity of the time sequence. To solve the above problems, an automatic detection method for epilepsy was proposed, based on improved refined composite multi-scale dispersion entropy (IRCMDE) and particle swarm algorithm optimization support vector machine (PSO-SVM). First, the refined composite multi-scale dispersion entropy (RCMDE) is introduced, and then the segmented average calculation of coarse-grained sequence is replaced by local maximum calculation to solve the problem of information loss. Finally, the entropy value is normalized to improve the robustness of characteristic parameters, and IRCMDE is formed. The simulated results show that when examining the complexity of the simulated signal, IRCMDE can eliminate the issue of information loss compared with MDE and RCMDE and weaken the entropy change caused by different parameter selections. In addition, IRCMDE is used as the feature parameter of the epileptic EEG signal, and PSO-SVM is used to identify the feature parameters. Compared with MDE-PSO-SVM, and RCMDE-PSO-SVM methods, IRCMDE-PSO-SVM can obtain more accurate recognition results.

EEG artifacts reduction by multivariate empirical mode decomposition and multiscale entropy for monitoring depth of anaesthesia during surgery

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been widely utilized to measure the depth of anaesthesia (DOA) during operation. However, the EEG signals are usually contaminated by artifacts which have a consequence on the measured DOA accuracy. In this study, an effective and useful filtering algorithm based on multivariate empirical mode decomposition and multiscale entropy (MSE) is proposed to measure DOA. Mean entropy of MSE is used as an index to find artifacts-free intrinsic mode functions. The effect of different levels of artifacts on the performances of the proposed filtering is analysed using simulated data. Furthermore, 21 patients' EEG signals are collected and analysed using sample entropy to calculate the complexity for monitoring DOA. The correlation coefficients of entropy and bispectral index (BIS) results show 0.14 ± 0.30 and 0.63 ± 0.09 before and after filtering, respectively. Artificial neural network (ANN) model is used for range mapping in order to correlate the measurements with BIS. The ANN method results show strong correlation coefficient (0.75 ± 0.08). The results in this paper verify that entropy values and BIS have a strong correlation for the purpose of DOA monitoring and the proposed filtering method can effectively filter artifacts from EEG signals. The proposed method performs better than the commonly used wavelet denoising method. This study provides a fully adaptive and automated filter for EEG to measure DOA more accuracy and thus reduce risk related to maintenance of anaesthetic agents.

EEG Signals Analysis Using Multiscale Entropy for Depth of Anesthesia Monitoring during Surgery through Artificial Neural Networks

In order to build a reliable index to monitor the depth of anesthesia (DOA), many algorithms have been proposed in recent years, one of which is sample entropy (SampEn), a commonly used and important tool to measure the regularity of data series. However, SampEn only estimates the complexity of signals on one time scale. In this study, a new approach is introduced using multiscale entropy (MSE) considering the structure information over different time scales. The entropy values over different time scales calculated through MSE are applied as the input data to train an artificial neural network (ANN) model using bispectral index (BIS) or expert assessment of conscious level (EACL) as the target. To test the performance of the new index's sensitivity to artifacts, we compared the results before and after filtration by multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD). The new approach via ANN is utilized in real EEG signals collected from 26 patients before and after filtering by MEMD, respectively; the results show that is a higher correlation between index from the proposed approach and the gold standard compared with SampEn. Moreover, the proposed approach is more structurally robust to noise and artifacts which indicates that it can be used for monitoring the DOA more accurately.

Monitoring depth of anesthesia using combination of EEG measure and hemodynamic variables

Monitoring depth of anesthesia (DOA) via vital signs is a major ongoing challenge for anesthetists. A number of electroencephalogram (EEG)-based monitors such as the Bispectral (BIS) index have been proposed. However, anesthesia is related to central and autonomic nervous system functions whereas the EEG signal originates only from the central nervous system. This paper proposes an automated DOA detection system which consists of three steps. Initially, we introduce multiscale modified permutation entropy index which is robust in the characterization of the burst suppression pattern and combine multiscale information. This index quantifies the amount of complexity in EEG data and is computationally efficient, conceptually simple and artifact resistant. Then, autonomic nervous system activity is quantified with heart rate and mean arterial pressure which are easily acquired using routine monitoring machine. Finally, the extracted features are used as input to a linear discriminate analyzer (LDA). The method is validated with data obtained from 25 patients during the cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. The experimental results indicate that an overall accuracy of 89.4 % can be obtained using combination of EEG measure and hemodynamic variables, together with LDA to classify the vital sign into awake, light, surgical and deep anesthetised states. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can estimate DOA more effectively than the commercial BIS index with a stronger artifact-resistance.

Dynamic characteristics of absence EEG recordings with multiscale permutation entropy analysis

Understanding the transition of brain activities towards an absence seizure, called pre-epileptic seizure, is a challenge. In this study, multiscale permutation entropy (MPE) is proposed to describe dynamical characteristics of electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings on different absence seizure states. The classification ability of the MPE measures using linear discriminant analysis is evaluated by a series of experiments. Compared to a traditional multiscale entropy method with 86.1% as its classification accuracy, the classification rate of MPE is 90.6%. Experimental results demonstrate there is a reduction of permutation entropy of EEG from the seizure-free state to the seizure state. Moreover, it is indicated that the dynamical characteristics of EEG data with MPE can identify the differences among seizure-free, pre-seizure and seizure states. This also supports the view that EEG has a detectable change prior to an absence seizure.
