The Predictive Strength of Students' Self-Efficacy, Problem Solving Skills to Perform Catheter Care

Decision-based learning for teaching arterial blood gas analysis

OBJECTIVES

This case study explored implementation of a Decision-Based Learning (DBL) tool for teaching arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis to nursing students.

METHODS

For this mixed-methods study, ABG problems in a DBL model were solved by nursing students. Students answered a survey about their experience with DBL. Quantitative survey results are reported with descriptive statistics. Open-ended questions and instructor and student interview data were qualitatively analyzed.

RESULTS

Students had a positive experience with DBL and gained self-efficacy regarding ABG analysis. The tool was engaging, simple to use, and not overly time-consuming.

CONCLUSIONS

DBL can be a useful tool for teaching ABG analysis to nursing students. Implications for an international audience nursing students everywhere benefit from understanding ABG analysis. DBL is a promising tool that can be used in any location with digital resources.

The relationships between self-regulated learning in clinical nursing practice and self-efficacy: A cross-sectional study among nursing students

PURPOSE

The aim is to examine self-regulated learning and self-efficacy levels of nursing students, the relationship between them, and to reveal the variables that make a significant difference.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 417 nursing students. The data were collected using the Self-Regulated Learning Scale in Clinical Nursing Practice and Self-Efficacy Scale.

FINDINGS

Nursing students have high self-regulated learning (60.28 ± 11.47) and moderate self-efficacy (62.72 ± 11.04) scores, and there is a weak positive and significant relationship between them (r = 0.349, p < 0.001). Students' gender, grade, and self-confidence in practice made a significant difference in the scores (p < 0.05).

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Developing the self-regulated learning levels of nursing students can help increase the clinical practice performance of students by affecting their self-efficacy levels.

Effects of Problem-Based Learning on the Problem-Solving Ability and Self-Efficacy of Students Majoring in Dental Hygiene

This study developed a problem-based learning (PBL) module to improve integrated thinking and problem-solving ability in students of dental hygiene. After applying PBL, the study tested the improvement in the problem-solving ability and self-efficacy of students. The subjects were 31 fourth-year students of the Department of Dental Hygiene at G University. The PBL process was applied to three topics for 15 weeks, and the tools for evaluating problem-solving ability and self-efficacy were reconstructed and used before and after the application to examine the effects of the module. The result indicates that the mean of problem-solving ability (32 detailed items) increased from 3.37 to 3.65 (an increase of 0.28) after classes (p < 0.001). Alternatively, the average for self-efficacy (22 detailed questions) increased from 0.21 to 2.89 (p < 0.05; an increase of 2.67). The study also confirmed the correlation between problem-solving ability and the total posttest score for self-efficacy (p < 0.001). Thus, the problem-solving ability and self-efficacy of learners were improved in the class to which PBL was applied. These improvements exerted a significant effect on the improvement of problem-solving ability. This finding confirmed the effect of the PBL method on dental hygiene education.

Relationships between Nursing Students’ Skill Mastery, Test Anxiety, Self-Efficacy, and Facial Expressions: A Preliminary Observational Study

Test anxiety and self-efficacy significantly influence the mastery of nursing skills. Facial expression recognition tools are central components to recognising these elements. This study investigated the frequent facial expressions conveyed by nursing students and examined the relationships between nursing skill mastery, test anxiety, self-efficacy, and facial expressions in a test-taking situation. Thirty-three second-year nursing students who were attending a university in a Korean metropolitan city participated. Test anxiety, self-efficacy, and facial expressions were collected while the students inserted indwelling catheters. Using Microsoft Azure software, the researchers examined the students’ facial expressions. Negative facial expressions, such as anger, disgust, sadness, and surprise, were more common during the test-taking situation than the practice trial. Fear was positively correlated with anxiety. None of the facial expressions had significant relationships with self-efficacy; however, disgust was positively associated with nursing skill mastery. The facial expressions during the practice and test-taking situations were similar; however, fear and disgust may have been indicators of test anxiety and skill mastery. To create a screening tool for detecting and caring for students’ emotions, further studies should explore students’ facial expressions that were not evaluated in this study.

Evidence of learning on the insertion and care of peripheral venous catheters in nursing students: A mixed study

OBJECTIVES

1) To assess nursing students' evidence-based knowledge on the use of PVCs, and 2) to examine the perception of learning and teaching strategies aimed at this skill.

BACKGROUND

Insertion and care of Peripheral Venous Catheters (PVCs) are essential skills in undergraduate nursing education. Appropriate knowledge of this skill is crucial to improve clinical practice and patient safety. Therefore, training becomes an enabler for safe practice.

DESIGN

A multi-centre convergent parallel mixed-methods.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

A total of 675 second-, third- and fourth-year nursing students from 3 nursing schools took part in the study.

METHODS

Quantitative data collection used a validated 15-question survey on knowledge of PVC management, and a descriptive and inferential analysis was carried out. Qualitative data were collected via a questionnaire consisting of 4 open-ended questions assessing knowledge, teaching methodologies and scenarios, and points for improvement.

RESULTS

Most participants were female (74.04%), with a mean age of 22.45 (SD = 4.65), who had no experience in the health field (61.8%). They obtained a mean knowledge score of 7.27 (SD = 2.64) out of 15. The students who obtained higher scores had a mean professional experience of 7.96, SD = 2.66 (p 0.000) and were in their final year, with a mean of 8.59, SD = 2.56, (p 0.000). On the other hand, the students assessed their knowledge as basic but improving year by year. They also identified a need to apply more active and experiential methodologies that would allow for reflection.

CONCLUSION

Level of educational level and experience is associated with increased knowledge. In order to improve knowledge, changes must be made in the training process to incorporate methodologies such as simulation and online training. There is a need to develop programmes that favour the alignment of theory with clinical practice.

The Relationship between Self-Directed Learning and Problem-Solving Ability: The Mediating Role of Academic Self-Efficacy and Self-Regulated Learning among Nursing Students

Problem-solving ability is necessary for the clinical reasoning and decision-making of nurses to solve patients' health problems. This study aims to investigate the association between self-directed learning and problem-solving ability using the multiple mediation model to identify strategies to enhance problem-solving ability in nursing students. This is a descriptive survey study of 193 nursing students from two universities in South Korea. Data about self-directed learning, self-regulated learning, academic self-efficacy, and problem-solving ability were collected using structured questionnaires between 5 March and 17 June 2018, and were analyzed using serial multiple mediation analysis. The direct effect of self-directed learning on problem-solving ability was statistically significant. The serial multiple mediation technique predicting problem-solving ability from self-directed learning, academic self-efficacy, and self-regulated learning was significant, explaining 40% of the variance in problem-solving ability. The relationship between self-directed learning and problem-solving ability was partially mediated by academic self-efficacy and self-regulated learning. This study suggests the suitability of considering academic self-efficacy and self-regulated learning together when conducting self-directed learning to improve nursing students' problem-solving ability.
