Salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates: A case series and brief literature review

BACKGROUND

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in non-human primates.

METHODS

Thirty-five years of pathology records were reviewed at the Southwest (SNPRC) and Yerkes (YNPRC) National Primate Research Centers. An in-depth literature search for salivary gland neoplasms in non-human primates was performed.

RESULTS

Seventeen salivary gland neoplasms (nine from SNPRC and YNPRC, eight from published literature) were identified. There were seven malignant, nine benign, and one of undetermined behavior identified in eight rhesus macaques, six baboons, a chimpanzee, a bonnet macaque, and a moustached tamarin. Parotid gland was the most frequent origin (n = 7), followed by mandibular (n = 4) or minor salivary glands (n = 2). Two animals with salivary gland adenoma had a history of prior radiation exposure.

CONCLUSIONS

Parotid glands are the most common origin for salivary gland neoplasms. Salivary gland neoplasms should be considered in the differential diagnoses of head and neck masses in non-human primates.

Lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland: 2 case reports and review of the literature on fat-containing salivary gland lesions

Two cases of lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland in two dogs are reported. Both dogs were presented with a slow growing unilateral non-painful mass in the parotid region. The mass measured 12 and 15 cm on the longest axis for case 1 and 2 respectively. Initial incisional biopsies were suggestive of infiltrative lipoma or salivary gland adenocarcinoma. Case 2 underwent head radiographs that showed a soft tissue opacity on the area of the right parotid gland followed by a computed tomography that showed a multi-lobulated infiltrative mass occupying the right parotid gland. Both cases underwent total parotidectomy with an excisional biopsy intent. Surgery on case 1 included total ear canal ablation (TECA). Histology revealed lipomatosis of the parotid gland with a similar admixture of adipocytes and well-differentiated salivary acini on both cases. No recurrence was reported by 4 years for case 1 and by 3 years for case 2. Case 1 developed long-term right-sided facial paralysis and palpebral reflex deficit due to damage of the facial and trigeminal nerve during surgery. The cases are described and the veterinary literature is reviewed in view of the most updated information available in human medicine on fat-containing salivary gland lesions. Considering this literature review, authors recommended these two cases to be classified as lipomatosis of the salivary gland. In conclusion, fat-containing salivary gland lesions should be considered in the list of differential diagnoses in dogs with an enlarged salivary gland and seem to be associated with an excellent prognosis after surgical excision.

Infiltrative cutaneous hemangiolipoma in a goat

An approximately 4-year-old castrated male, Saanen cross goat presented to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for evaluation and removal of a 22 cm × 22 cm, dark red, thickened, and crusted cutaneous lesion along the left ventrolateral thorax. An initial incisional biopsy performed approximately 8 weeks earlier was suspicious for cutaneous hemangiosarcoma. Surgical excision was deemed to be the most appropriate treatment option for this goat. A complete physical exam, complete blood count, and chemistry profile were performed and results were within normal limits. Thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasound were performed to rule out metastatic disease and comorbid conditions; no metastatic lesions or other abnormalities were observed. En bloc surgical excision of the affected skin was performed and the entire tissue was submitted for histopathology. A final diagnosis of cutaneous hemangiolipoma was reached upon extensive sectioning and histologic examination of the larger tissue specimen. The goat recovered well from surgery and has had no further complications up to 9 months postoperatively. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a hemangiolipoma in a goat and surgical excision for such lesions appears to be a viable treatment method.
