From ambition to substance use tendency: the mediating role of significance quest

In this study, the aim was to determine the mediating effect of the quest for significance on the relationship between ambition and substance use tendency in emerging adults. Data were collected from emerging adults studying at various universities in Turkey through both face-to-face and online processes. A total of 506 emerging adults ( X ¯ age = 21.62) participated in the study. The Ambition Scale, Significance Quest Scale, Substance Initiation Tendency Scale, and a demographic form were used to gather data. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the data. The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between ambition and the quest for significance, as well as between the quest for significance and substance use tendency in emerging adults. Furthermore, the quest for significance was found to mediate the relationship between ambition and substance use tendency in this population. Suggestions were provided based on the findings of the study.

Unraveling substance abuse among Malawian street children: A qualitative exploration

This qualitative study adopts a phenomenological and symbolic interactionist approach to comprehensively explore substance abuse among street children in Lilongwe, Malawi. The research aims to uncover the complex sociocultural, economic, and environmental determinants influencing substance abuse within this marginalized cohort. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews, the study engages with street children to understand their subjective experiences, perceptions, and interpretations of substance abuse within their community context. Employing convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling strategies, the research collected data from street children, acknowledging their transient nature and societal challenges. Thematic analysis was conducted on interview transcripts to derive comprehensive insights. Results revealed five key thematic areas: familial absence and emotional void, societal normalization and peer pressure, economic hardships, coping mechanisms, environmental accessibility, and peer influence and belongingness. These themes highlighted the intricate interplay between personal experiences, socio-environmental factors, and peer dynamics, shaping the prevalence and persistence of substance abuse among street children. This study's implications for practice underscore the need for tailored interventions and support mechanisms addressing substance abuse within this demographic. It emphasizes the urgency for context-specific strategies and policy formulations aimed at ameliorating the challenges faced by street children dealing with substance abuse in Malawi. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of substance abuse among marginalized street children, advocating for compassionate and contextually sensitive interventions within this overlooked drug abusers' population subset.

Parenting style and child asthma control in families of school-age children with asthma: The mediating effects of children's general self-efficacy and medication adherence

PURPOSE

Parenting style plays a pivotal role in children's chronic disease control. However, the relationship and underlying mechanism between parenting style and asthma control remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of parenting style on children's general self-efficacy, medication adherence and asthma control and the mediating effects of general self-efficacy and medication adherence among school-age children with asthma.

DESIGN AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling approach was conducted. This study followed the STROBE guidelines. School-age children with asthma and their parents (N = 211) from pediatric respiratory clinics in China completed the General Questionnaire, Short-Egna Minnen av. Barndoms Uppfostran-Chinese, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Medication Adherence Questionnaire and Childhood Asthma Control Test. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the mediation models.

RESULTS

Positive parenting style was positively correlated with child general self-efficacy, medication adherence and asthma control (r = 0.602, 0.572, 0.613, p < 0.001). Negative parenting style was negatively correlated with child general self-efficacy, medication adherence and asthma control (r = -0.535, -0.598, -0.586, p < 0.001). Structure Equation Modle (SEM) results indicated that the relationships between positive parenting style, negative parenting style and child asthma control were mediated by general self-efficacy (Effect Size [ES]: 0.209, 95%CI [0.075, 0.372]; and ES: -0.229, 95%CI [-0.387, -0.103], respectively) and medication adherence (ES: 0.128, 95%CI [0.032, 0.322]; and ES: -0.190, 95%CI [-0.432, -0.071], respectively) and together in serial (ES: 0.177, 95%CI [0.076, 0.295]; and ES: -0.118, 95%CI [-0.235, -0.020], respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Parenting style may impact child asthma through both child general self-efficacy and medication adherence. The study may provide useful intervention targets for improving asthma control.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Nurses should encourage parents to increase positive parenting style while decreasing negative parenting style. Family interventions focusing on general self-efficacy and medication adherence may be advantageous to improve asthma control.

Executive functions and play

Executive functions and play have been researched separately over the last few decades. Only recently has the association between the two constructs received more attention. Thus, a Special Issue on this association is timely. The six empirical studies of the Special Issue applied various types of play (e.g., dramatic play or physical play) in their research. Children's executive functions were also measured with a variety of tasks. The wide variability of the studies was a learning point, especially given the cultural connotation of executive function measures. All the studies of the Special Issue were conducted in WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) countries raising the issue of generalizability. We discuss future directions of the research on executive functions and play hoping for longitudinal studies on the association between these constructs in the future.

The impact of e-government information quality (EGIQ) dimensions on the adoption of electronic government services

E-government's capacity to reform public service delivery is hinged on critical factors from the demand side of e-government. The demand side of e-government is the element that drives users’ behaviors to adopt e-government services and understanding these factors is fundamental to driving the realization of e-government targets. This study thus examined the extent to which e-government information quality dimensions can stimulate the acceptance and utilization of e-government services. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was used as the theoretical basis for this paper and the data congregated was evaluated with Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) statistical software using the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The results have revealed that both effort expectancy and facilitating conditions significantly drive the intention to use and recommend the adoption of e-government services. Also, e-government information quality dimensions such as availability, objectivity, utility, confidentiality, and integrity were all found to positively drive the intention to use e-government services. Additionally, people's intention to use e-government was significant in driving the recommendation behavior of e-government services to others. The practical and research repercussions of these discoveries on the development and deployment of e-government-empowered services are deliberated.

Mediating Role of Customer Value Co-creation and Internal Branding Between Brand Orientation and Brand Performance: Moderating Effect of Enterprise Innovative Capabilities-Evidence From Agri Product Users

There has been a rejuvenated interest from researchers and scholars regarding the various ways in which organizations can enhance their overall brand performance. Enterprise brand orientation are said to be the main factors that aid in improving brand performance along with internal branding and the customer value co-creation. To assess this relationship, the present study undertook an inquiry to investigate the impact of enterprise brand orientation on brand performance. Moreover, the mediating roles of customer value co-creation and internal branding were also studied. Data was obtained from 358 Chinese consumers of various household, electronic, and textile goods through a self-administered survey. A SEM technique was applied using Smart-PLS to examine the data. The findings suggested that enterprise brand orientation had a significant effect on brand performance. Moreover, it was also observed that internal branding and customer value co-creation also had a predicting role in brand performance. In addition to this, customer value co-creation and internal branding were seen to be strongly mediating the relationships between enterprise brand orientation and brand performance. The study also checked the moderating role of enterprise innovative capabilities on the effect on enterprise brand orientation and brand performance. The theoretical implication entailed the value addition made by the current study in expanding the knowledge on the predictors of enterprise brand equity. The practical implication outlined the steps that could be taken by organizations to improve brand performance through enterprise brand orientation; internal branding and customer value co-creation so that customer satisfaction and enterprise brand performance could be enhanced.

Determinants of Unverified News Sharing on Social Media and Its Effects on Corporate Image

Social media channels are interactive channels that let users spread content, participate, and generate positive or negative news. In this era of social media (SM), organizations run structured and systematic campaigns to shape their corporate images. The present study examines the role of social consciousness (SC) of employees, entertainment (Ent), and altruism (Alt) on unverified news sharing (UVN) with the mediation of corporate image (CI) and the moderation of workplace stress (WS). We conducted the study on 375 employees of the social media teams in the corporate sector in China. The sampling technique used in this study is convenience sampling. We carried out data analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM) with the help of Smart PLS (Partial Least Square) software. The results reveal that the entertainment and altruism of employees affect UVN. However, the direct negative effect of social consciousness of employees and CI on UVN came out to be insignificant. The findings also show that CI mediates the relationship between the social consciousness (SC) of employees and UVN, altruism and UVN, and entertainment and UVN. The moderating role of WS between CI and UVN is significant. Theoretically, the study contributes to the literature by examining the effect of different determinants of UVN on SM on the role of CI and WS. Practically, the present study provides implications for the managers and the organizations. The study finds that Alt is an essential factor that fosters UVN and CI; therefore, altruistic values of the employees should be instigated to reduce the flow of UVN.

Fostering Enterprise Performance Through Employee Brand Engagement and Knowledge Sharing Culture: Mediating Role of Innovative Capability

Enterprise performance is a critical component of any organizational success that is directly affected by its employees and the culture prevailing in the organizations. In order to gain strategic advantage from the employee brand equity it is important that organizations make efforts in retaining such employees that benefit the organizations. Therefore, this research examines the impact of employee brand equity and knowledge sharing culture on the enterprise performance with the mediating role of innovative capabilities. A self-administered survey was conducted among the 323 employees of information technology sector working in the software houses in China. Smart PLS has been used to analyze the data through partial least square structural equation modeling. Results of the study have demonstrated that knowledge sharing culture plays a significant role in the enterprise performance while employee brand equity could not find statistically significant impact on enterprise performance. In addition, the SEM analysis further showed that employee brand equity and knowledge sharing culture play a significant role in the innovative capabilities. Results also revealed that innovative capabilities mediate the effect of employee brand equity and knowledge sharing culture variables on the enterprise performance. This research enriches the literature by examining the role of knowledge sharing culture in enterprise performance and innovative capabilities. This research further offers certain implications for the human resource department in developing their human resources. This can be achieved by availing the maximum skills of the branded employees by creating learning opportunities for the other employees through training sessions where they help and share their experiences.
