The history of orthopaedic surgery in India: from antiquity to present

Indian orthopedists have a legacy dating back more than 4000 years. Starting with the Harappan civilization, ancient orthopaedic surgeons reduced fractures and conducted therapeutic trepanations. Since then, Indian physicians have pioneered many of the orthopaedic techniques still used today - including the use of prosthetics, fracture tables, and rehabilitative physical therapy. Today, orthopaedic surgeons coexist with traditional Indian bonesetters. Although bonesetting practices can have complication rates as high as 40%, bonesetters still handle a majority of fractures in India and are often culturally preferred. Importantly though, bonesetters are often the only expedient option available in both rural and urban settings.

Limb Salvage Surgery in Fungating Giant Cell Tumors: A Report of Three Cases

Introduction:

The WHO defines giant cell tumor as a benign locally aggressive neoplasm with metastasizing capacity and aggressive behavior. Very rarely, these tumors are seen fungating, mostly when neglected. But when they do, the treatment option commonly conferred is amputation of the limb which is disabling and traumatizing.

Case Report:

We report three cases of fungating limb masses (proximal tibia, distal fibula, and distal radius) diagnosed with giant cell tumor histologically, undergoing limb saving surgeries with various reconstruction techniques to endorse a good quality of life and functioning limb.

Conclusion:

Our study is one of the earliest to report medium-term follow-up after such limb salvage procedure. We recommend that salvage procedures should be considered in giant cell tumors even in the presence of fungation if there is no neurovascular encasement.

Evaluation of Patient Perceptions With Orthopedic Oncology Telehealth: A Pilot Project

Telehealth has been used for decades to improve access to care for rural and underserved patients. The adoption of telehealth in orthopedic oncology is novel and expected to positively impact patient access and compliance. However, no previous evaluation has been published of this expected impact. The objective of this pilot project was to evaluate patients' perceptions regarding orthopedic oncology telehealth services. A 13-question satisfaction survey was distributed to patients who used tele-orthopedic oncology. Fifteen respondents (a response rate of 42%) reported satisfaction with services at 9.7 of 10. Median travel distance to the nearest in-person orthopedic oncologist was greater than 150 miles (241 km). These results are consistent with the previous findings of high satisfaction with telehealth in other specialties. Health care organizations are likely to benefit from offering telehealth to orthopedic oncology patients with limited access.
