Pediatric focal calvarial lesions: an illustrated review

Focal skull lesions in children can be diagnostically challenging with a wide variety of potential etiologies. Understanding the diverse pathologies and recognizing their associated clinical and imaging characteristics is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning. We review pertinent anatomy of the scalp and calvarium and review different pathologies that can present with focal skull lesions in pediatric patients. These include neoplastic, non-neoplastic tumor-like, congenital, post traumatic, and vascular-associated etiologies. We review the key clinical and imaging features associated with these pathologies and present teaching points to help make the correct diagnosis. It is important for radiologists to be aware of the common and rare etiologies of skull lesions as well as the clinical and imaging characteristics which can be used to develop an accurate differential to ensure a timely diagnosis and initiate appropriate management.

Endoscopic Excision of the Intraosseous Hemangioma of the Nasal Bone

An intraosseous hemangioma is a rare benign tumor of the bone. Moreover, it is rarely observed in the nasal bone. A 58-year-old female patient complained of swelling in the nasal dorsum and mild pain. CT showed a round mass with a honeycomb appearance meanwhile, MRI revealed a hypointense mass in T1 sequences and hyperintense in T2 and gadolinium sequences. Endoscopic removal of the intraosseous hemangioma was performed. No recurrence was observed in the post-op 6th-month follow-up.

Endoscopic open rhinoplasty enables a cosmetic approach for a rare case of intraosseous cavernous hemangioma in the nasal bone

A rare case of intraosseous cavernous hemangioma was identified in the nasal root. Using a combination of endoscopic surgery and open rhinoplasty, an osteotomy was performed and resection of the hemangioma was successfully achieved with transcolumellar and infracartilaginous incisions and 2 stab incisions. No adverse side effects were observed after the procedure, no tumor recurrence was observed at the 16-month-postoperative follow-up. The preserved periosteum contributed to the osteogenesis and thus, a need for a reconstructive surgery was indicated. The favorable outcomes associated with this approach justify and authenticate the use of endoscopy-assisted open rhinoplasty in the treatment of intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas without leaving ventral surgical scarring.
