Incidental Finding of Suprachoroidal Space's Silicone Oil Migration: A Tumor-Mimicking Lesion and Its Clinical Management

The migration of silicone oil into the suprachoroidal region is a rare complication of vitrectomy. A 70-year-old man was admitted to our ocular oncology unit with a choroidal elevation in the nasal area, as well as signs of pars plana vitrectomy surgery performed about 5 years ago for retinal detachment. The patient underwent ocular ultrasound, visual field test, fluorangiography, and magnetic resonance imaging, which led to the diagnosis of silicone oil migration in the suprachoroidal space. Silicone oil may move into the suprachoroidal area, mimicking choroidal neoformation. It is important to have a comprehensive diagnosis and then set up the appropriate treatment. Suprachoroidal silicone oil migration following retinal detachment repair

Silicone oil is a commonly used tamponade agent. We report the rare complication of a patient who presented with silicone oil in the suprachoroidal space following retinal detachment repair. The silicone oil was subsequently removed without any long-term complications.

Management of suprachoroidal 5,000-centistoke silicone oil: two contrasting approaches

Two patients experienced unplanned infusion of suprachoroidal 5,000-centistoke silicone oil during vitrectomy surgery. In one patient the oil was surgically removed using an internal incision in the pars plana choroid after external aspiration failed. The oil was expressed from the suprachoroidal space through this opening into the vitreous cavity. Perfluorocarbon liquid was injected over the posterior pole to displace residual suprachoroidal oil into the vitreous cavity, and the oil was then removed via the existing sclerotomy. In the second patient, the oil was observed, and the patient had a stable visual and anatomic outcome at 1-year follow-up.
