Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Pudilan is a famous traditional Chinese medicine compound which contains several Chinese herbal ingredients, and has been wildly used to treat a variety of inflammatory diseases in China. Recently, it was reported that Pudilan extract had been used in the oral field, especially in the treatment of minor oral ulcers for its anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, antibacterial, clearing heat, and detoxifying effects. AIM OF THE STUDY To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Pudilan extract-containing toothpaste in controlling plaques and reducing chronic gingivitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 patients with chronic gingivitis were randomized into an experiment group and a control group (n = 60 patients per group) based on a double-blinded method. Patients in the experiment group used a Pudilan extract-containing toothpaste, whereas patients in the control group used a Pudilan toothpaste simulator, which were identical as the toothpaste used by the experiment group, except for not containing the Pudilan extract. The Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Bleeding Index (BI), and Bleeding On Probing proportion (BOP%) were recorded at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks after using the toothpaste. RESULTS After using the toothpaste for 8 and 12 weeks, PI, BI, GI, and BOP% of the experiment group were significantly lower when compared to the control group (both p < 0.001). Moreover, after using the toothpaste for 4, 8, and 12 weeks, the decline of the PI and GI in the experiment group were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.001, except 4weeks PI p = 0.011). After 12 weeks, the PI of the experiment group decreased 35.73% (p < 0.001) whereas the GI decreased 29.04% (p < 0.001). BI and BOP decline rates were statistically significant when compared to those of the control group at 8 and 12 weeks (both p < 0.001). Moreover, at 12 weeks, the BI of the experiment group decreased 34.33% (p < 0.001) and BOP% decreased 54.71% (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Toothpaste with Pudilan extract demonstrated good effect on relieving symptoms of chronic gingivitis by inhibiting plaque formation, reducing gingival inflammation and the degree of bleeding, and the bleeding rate. Toothpaste containing Pudilan extract has prospective application potentials in the prevention and treatment of chronic gingivitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of three desensitizing dentifrices on dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) and salivary biochemical characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomized, parallel arm, triple-blinded, clinical trial was conducted over a period of 12 weeks, with a total of three visits: baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks. Calcium sodium phosphosilicate, potassium nitrate and amine fluoride dentifrices were compared. A total of 68 subjects who satisfied the inclusion criteria were included and randomly divided into four groups. Visual analog scale scores for controlled air stimulus were used to assess dentinal sensitivity and salivary pH and buffering capacity were recorded at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks. RESULTS All groups showed a reduction in sensitivity scores at 6 and 12 weeks. The calcium sodium phosphosilicate group showed a higher degree of effectiveness in reducing DH than potassium nitrate, amine fluoride dentifrices, and placebo for sensitivity measures. Salivary pH of calcium sodium phosphosilicate group was more toward neutral, and the buffering capacity of the same group showed significant changes from baseline to 6 and 12 weeks compared to the other groups. CONCLUSION The desensitizing toothpaste containing calcium sodium phosphosilicate was found to be more effective in reducing DH and showed improvement in salivary biochemical characteristics over a period of 12 weeks compared to others.

Abstract
Aim This 12-week prospective, randomized, double-blind, two-center trial evaluated the impact of a microcrystalline zinc hydroxyapatite (mHA) dentifrice on plaque formation rate (PFR) in chronic periodontitis patients. We hypothesized that mHA precipitates cause delayed plaque development when compared to a fluoridated control (AmF/SnF2), and therefore would improve periodontal health. Material & Methods At baseline and after 4 and 12 weeks, PFR and other clinical and microbiological parameters were recorded. Seventy periodontitis patients received a mHA or AmF/SnF2 dentifrice as daily oral care without hygiene instructions. Four weeks after baseline, participants received full mouth debridement and continued using the dentifrices for another 8 weeks. Results Primary outcome PFR did not change statistically significantly from baseline to weeks 4 and 12, neither in mHA (n = 33; 51.7±17.2% vs. 48.5±16.65% vs. 48.4±19.9%) nor in AmF/SnF2-group (n = 34; 52.3±17.5% vs. 52.5±21.3% vs. 46.1±21.8%). Secondary clinical parameters such as plaque control record, gingival index, bleeding on probing, and pocket probing depth improved, but between-group differences were not statistically significant. Microbiological analyses showed similar slight decreases in colony-forming units in both groups. Conclusion In patients with mild-to-moderate periodontitis, periodontal therapy and use of a mHA-or AmF/SnF2 dentifrice without instructions induced comparable improvements in periodontal health but did not significantly reduce the PFR.
