Abstract
Background Endodontic therapy aims to disinfect the entire root canal system. Extracts from the kernel of Mangifera indica has the potential to be a novel root canal irrigant that has yet to be studied. Hence, the present study evaluated the antimicrobial, and smear layer removal efficacy of the M. indica kernel extract as a root canal irrigant in primary molars. Materials and Methods Methanolic extract of M. indica was prepared using the standard method. The antimicrobial efficacy of M. indica kernel extract was determined by agar diffusion method with 3% sodium hypochlorite and distilled water as controls, and the smear layer removal efficacy was assessed under the SEM after processing the root samples with different concentrations of M. indica kernel extract with 17% EDTA and distilled water as positive and negative controls, respectively. Results A statistically significant antimicrobial efficacy was observed with the largest mean zone of inhibition recorded with 50 μl of M. indica kernel extract at 24 hr of incubation period, when compared to sodium hypochlorite as a root canal irrigant against Enterococcus faecalis using agar diffusion method at MIC value of 0.625 mg/ml. The smear layer removal efficacy of the M. indica kernel extract was not satisfactory, when compared with EDTA as a root canal irrigant in primary molars and observed under SEM. In contrast, a complete smear layer removal was observed with 17% EDTA solution. Conclusion M. indica kernel extract has an enhanced antimicrobial efficacy but poor smear layer removal efficacy when used as a root canal irrigant.

Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing uses a large amount of fresh water for its operation; conventional wells can consume up to 200 000 gallons of water, while unconventional wells could consume up to 16 million gallons. However, the world's fresh water supply is rapidly depleting, making this a critical and growing problem. Freshwater shortages during large-scale hydraulic fracturing in regions that lack water, such as the Arabian Peninsula and offshore operations, need to be addressed. One of the ways to address this problem is to substitute fresh water with seawater, which is a sustainable, cheap, and technically sufficient fluid that can be utilized as a fracturing fluid. However, its high salinity caused by the multitude of ions in it could induce several problems, such as scaling and precipitation. This, in turn, could potentially affect the viscosity and rheology of the fluid. There are a variety of additives that can be used to lessen the effects of the various ions found in seawater. This review explains the mechanisms of different additives (e.g., polymers, surfactants, chelating agents, cross-linkers, scale inhibitors, gel stabilizers, and foams), how they interact with seawater, and the related implications in order to address the above challenges and develop a sustainable and compatible seawater-based fracturing fluid. This review also describes several previous technologies and works that have treated seawater in order to produce a fluid that is stable at higher temperatures, that has a considerably reduced scaling propensity, and that has utilized a stable polymer network to efficiently carry proppant downhole. In addition, some of these previous works included field testing to evaluate the performance of the seawater-based fracturing fluid.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of different final irrigation regimens (Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet, MTAD, and EDTA) in removing the smear layer from intra-radicular dentin using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Eighty-four mandibular premolars were prepared with ProTaper Universal hand files and were equally divided into four groups i.e. Normal saline (control), EDTA, MTAD and CAP Plasma Jet. Prepared samples in the control, EDTA and MTAD groups were irrigated with 5 milliliters of the irrigant, and it was retained for 2 min. In the CAP Plasma Jet group, the plasma plume was directed towards the canal lumen for 2 min. The smear layer removal of all the groups was evaluated at the coronal, middle and apical thirds. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn's test. Evaluation by SEM showed that the smear layer removal ability of MTAD and EDTA were significantly better than CAP Plasma Jet (p < 0.05). While CAP Plasma Jet showed results comparable to EDTA in the coronal third. In the middle and apical third of the canal, its effect was comparable to the control group (p > 0.05). MTAD and EDTA aided in better smear layer removal than the CAP Plasma Jet in the coronal, middle, and apical third of the test samples. CAP Plasma jet performed better in the coronal third.

Abstract
Background The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of frequently used chemical agents in terms of their capacity to eliminate the smear layer after instrumentation, as observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and methods Sixty extracted single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth, each with roots 15 mm in length, were used in this study. The teeth were divided into one control group and four study groups, each containing 12 teeth. In Control Group 0, teeth were irrigated with 3 ml of saline only. In Group 1, teeth were irrigated initially with 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and then given a final rinse with 3 ml of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for one minute. In Group 2, teeth were irrigated with 3% NaOCl and given a final rinse with 3 ml of a mixture of tetracycline, acid, and detergent (MTAD, BIOPURE) for one minute. In Group 3, teeth were irrigated with saline and given a final rinse with 3 ml of 17% EDTA for one minute. In Group 4, teeth were irrigated with saline and given a final rinse with 3 ml of MTAD for one minute. One-half of each tooth was chosen and prepared for scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination at the cervical, middle, and apical thirds. These were observed at magnifications of up to 1,000 times to check for the presence or absence of a smear layer. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and post-hoc Dunn's test. Results All of the root canal irrigation protocols exhibited superior efficacy compared to the control group in the elimination of the smear layer. Group 2 (3% NaOCl with MTAD) showed the lowest mean scores, compared to all the groups, followed by Group 1 (3% NaOCl with 17% EDTA). MTAD was more effective than EDTA. The smear layer was effectively removed from the apical third, followed by the middle and coronal thirds of the root. Conclusion Initial irrigation with 3% NaOCl and one-minute final irrigation with 3 ml MTAD was the most effective root irrigant, and particularly indicated in teeth with infection of the apical third.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mechanical instrumentation of the root canal system generates a smear layer on the canal walls which are removed most commonly with the help of chelators such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) but can potentially cause severe dentinal erosion. Considerable research has been conducted to find an al- ternative to EDTA which removes the smear layer without causing dentinal erosion. The current study aimed at evaluating the ability of sodium gluconate compared with that of 17% EDTA in smear layer removal along with its effect on dentine decalcification when used as a final irrigant. METHODS Twenty single-rooted mandibular premolars were collected and prepared based on the pre-set criteria. Following preparation, the specimens were exposed to the test solutions as a final irrigant. Then the specimens were subjected to (Scanning electron microscope) SEM analysis at 1000x for evaluating the smear layer and 5000x for evaluating the dentinal erosion, and a Vickers microhardness tester was used for evaluat- ing the reduction in dentine microhardness post-treatment. The values obtained were analysed using SPSS software for a statistically significant difference with Mann-Whitney U test for evaluating of smear layer remov- al and dentinal erosion and using one-way (Analysis of variance) ANOVA test for microhardness evaluation. RESULTS The smear layer removal capability of sodium gluconate was as effective as EDTA on the contrary so- dium gluconate did not cause any dentinal erosion compared to EDTA with a statistically significant difference (p=0.002 in middle third and p=0.001 in apical third of the canal). Microhardness reduction caused by sodium gluconate was less compared to EDTA, however, no statistically significant difference (p=0.113) was noted. CONCLUSION Sodium gluconate, therefore, can produce a balance between smear layer removal and dentinal decalcification and can be considered a potential alternative to EDTA. (EEJ-2023-01-017).

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasonic activation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), maleic acid (MA), and fumaric acid (FA) in combination with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on postendodontic treatment root fracture toughness. Materials and Methods Forty single-rooted mandibular premolars were sectioned below the cementoenamel junction and were kept on average 14 mm long. With the exception of eight randomly selected teeth acting as a negative control group (Group I/nonprepared), the rest were prepared till F3. Thirty-two specimens were randomly placed into four groups equally and then irrigated using the final irrigation protocols. Saline and NaOCl were used to irrigate Group II, 17% EDTA and NaOCl were used to irrigate Group III, 7% MA and NaOCl were used to irrigate Group IV, and 0.7% FA and NaOCl were used to irrigate Group V. The irrigants were ultrasonically activated in every group. The root canals were obturated with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer. The roots were embedded along the long axis in the self-curing acrylic blocks along with polyvinyl siloxane, leaving the coronal 2 mm of the root exposed. The specimens were tested using a universal testing machine. Statistical Analysis The Post hoc Tamhane's and one-way ANOVA tests were applied to examine the data. Results The result of the study revealed that 0.7% FA (598.09 N) provided better root fracture resistance than EDTA (428.07 N) and MA (511.87 N). Conclusion The conclusion derived from the study was that 0.7% FA provided better fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth when compared to 17% EDTA and 7% MA.

Abstract
Introduction: This retrospective descriptive study evaluated the Scopus-indexed dental journals and their most-cited documents affiliated with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries from 2011 to 2021. Methods: Dental journals affiliated with MENA countries, their bibliometric indicators (SJR, CiteScore, SNIP, and H-index), and the 101 most cited articles of the considered journals were extracted and studied through descriptive statistics. In addition, the "citation per year" of each top 101 articles was calculated. Spearman's rho test was used for pairwise comparisons of the correlation coefficient values between each two of the considered bibliometric indicators. Results: The number of citations of the 101 most-cited papers ranged from 35 to 203. The mean (SD) citations of studied articles were 61.33 (37.58) and the median was 46. Furthermore, CiteScore had the highest significant correlation with SJR (r=0.828, P˂0.001). Moreover, the citation per year of the top 101 documents had no significant relationship with any of the journals' bibliometric indicators. Conclusion: Because journal performance and citation rate are multi-dimensional concepts, a single metric cannot express them thoroughly despite correlations between indices. "European Journal of Dentistry" from Turkey, "Saudi Dental Journal" from Saudi Arabia, and "Iranian Endodontic Journal" and "Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences" both from Iran had the highest ranks in the SCImago portal and the highest scores in bibliometric indices amongst the MENA dental journals.

Abstract
Several studies worldwide have reported contamination of bees' honey by antibiotics, which may pose a hazard to consumers' health. The present study was thus established to: (1) introduce a validated multi-residue method for determining sulfonamides (SAs) and tetracyclines (TCs) in honey; and (2) characterize the potential risk due to the exposure to SAs and TCs in honey samples from Egypt, Libya, and Saudi Arabia. SAs and TCs were simultaneously extracted using solid-phase extraction and matrix solid phase dispersion methods. SAs and TCs were screened using HPLC-MS/MS and HPLC-DAD. The results confirmed detection limits for SAs and TCs by HPLC-MS/MS of 0.01 and 0.02-0.04 (ng g-1), respectively. The limits were 2.5-5.6 and 12.0-21.0 (ng g-1) for SAs and TCs by HPLC-DAD, respectively. The obtained accuracy rates were in the ranges of 83.07-86.93% and 86.90-91.19%, respectively, for SAs and TCs, with precision rates lower than 9.54%. Concerning the occurrence of antibiotics, the positive samples constituted 57.6%, 75%, and 77.7% of the Egyptian, Saudi Arabian, and Libyan samples, respectively. Notably, SAs antibiotics were the most prevalent in the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian samples; in contrast, TCs were the most dominant in Libya. Calculated parameters of risk assessment, concerning the aggregated exposure to SAs and TCs, showed no potential adverse effects from the exposure to contaminated honey in studied countries.

MATERIALS AND METHODS The release of dentin sialoprotein (DSP), transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) with different chelating agents, including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), chitosan solution (CS), and nanoparticulate chitosan (CSnp), was investigated. DSP was quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). TGF-β1, VEGF, and PDGF-BB were quantified using a cytokine bead panel (CBA). Raman spectroscopy was performed to identify surface chemical changes. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test with Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon rank-sum test (p < 0.05). RESULTS TGF-β1, VEGF, and DSP solubilized in all irrigants tested. CSnp showed the highest concentration of DSP. PDGF-BB did not exceed the detection limits. Raman spectroscopy revealed a decrease in the phosphate and carbonate peaks, representing the chelating effect of EDTA, CS, and CSnp. Additionally, CSnp showed the greatest preservation of the amide I and III content. CONCLUSION Proteins can be released from dentin via EDTA, CS, and CSnp conditioning. Raman spectroscopic revealed changes in the inorganic content of the root dentin after chelation. Furthermore, use of CSnp facilitated a preservation of the organic content. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Chelation allows the release of proteins, justifying the use of chelating agents in regenerative endodontics. The chitosan-dentin matrix interaction also promotes the protection of the organic content as an additional benefit to its protein releasing effect.

Abstract
This study analysed the bioceramic sealer cleaning ability of two chemo-mechanical systems in intact and restored teeth. Thirty-two single-rooted teeth were used, and half of them restored with a pre-endodontic composite restoration (PCR). All samples were instrumented with a size 40 Reciproc Blue file and filled with BioRoot RCS. Canals were retreated using the R40 and then R50 Reciproc Blue. The samples were divided into four experimental groups (n = 8): intact teeth/passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) (G1), intact teeth/shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) (G2), PCR/PUI (G3) and PCR/SWEEPS (G4). The samples were scanned by micro-CT before and after retreatment, and the volume of remaining filling material was evaluated. The minor percentage of residues were observed in G2, with a volume of 0.447 ± 0.356% of the endodontic space (P < 0.001). The Reciproc/SWEEPS technique showed the better performance in intact teeth compared with PUI technique. Pre-endodontic restoration did not significantly affect the effectiveness of sealer removal.

Abstract
Groundwater is one of the main sources of water for irrigation used worldwide. However, the application of the resource is threatened by the possibility of high saline levels, especially in low-lying coastal regions. Furthermore, the lack of readily accessible materials for successful treatment procedures makes the purification of such water a constant challenge. Based on the fact that natural zeolite is one of the easily accessible and relatively cheap filter materials, this study examined the potential use of high-salinity groundwater filtered by natural zeolite for irrigation. Zeolite-filled filters at two different depths (0.5 m and 1 m) were studied. The samples were collected from the low-lying areas of Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania. The study observed that when the raw groundwater samples were exposed to the 0.5 m column depth, sodium (Na+) had the lowest removal efficiency at 40.2% and calcium (Ca2+) had the highest removal efficiency at 98.9%. On the other hand, magnesium (Mg2+) had the lowest removal efficiency, at about 61.2%, whereas potassium (K+) had up to about 99.7% removal efficiency from the 1 m column depth treatment system. Additionally, from the salinity hazard potential analysis, most of the samples fell within C4 (based on the electrical conductivity), which is a "very high salinity" class, and based on the quality it means the water cannot be directly applied for irrigation purposes. From the 0.5 m column depth, most of the samples fell within C3 (the "high salinity" class), and from the 1 m column depth most of the samples fell within C1 ("low salinity" class). The findings of this study offer some valuable insight into the prospective use of natural zeolite for the filtration of saline groundwater before its application for irrigation.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the role of crosslinking agents in the resin–dentin bond strength (BS) when used as modifiers in adhesives or pretreatments to the dentin surface through a systematic review and meta-analysis. This paper was conducted according to the directions of the PRISMA 2020 statement. The research question of this review was: “Would the use of crosslinkers agents improve the BS of resin-based materials to dentin?” The literature search was conducted in the following databases: Embase, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Science. Manuscripts that reported the effect on the BS after the use of crosslinking agents were included. The meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager v5.4.1. The comparisons were performed by comparing the standardized mean difference between the BS values obtained using the crosslinker agent or the control group. The subgroup comparisons were performed based on the adhesive strategy used (total-etch or self-etch). The immediate and long-term data were analyzed separately. A total of 50 articles were included in the qualitative analysis, while 45 articles were considered for the quantitative analysis. The meta-analysis suggested that pretreatment with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), carbodiimide, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), glutaraldehyde, and riboflavin crosslinking agents improved the long-term BS of resin composites to dentin (p ≤ 0.02). On the other hand, the use of proanthocyanidins as a pretreatment improved both the immediate and long-term BS values (p ≤ 0.02). When incorporated within the adhesive formulation, only glutaraldehyde, riboflavin, and EGCG improved the long-term BS to dentin. It could be concluded that the application of different crosslinking agents such as carbodiimide, EDTA, glutaraldehyde, riboflavin, and EGCG improved the long-term BS of adhesive systems to dentin. This effect was observed when these crosslinkers were used as a separate step and when incorporated within the formulation of the adhesive system.

Abstract
Direct utilization of treated effluent from natural treatment systems for irrigation can be challenging on sensitive plants due to high levels of salinity. Post-treatment of such an effluent prior to its applicability in irrigation can be of significant importance. In this study, the wastewater from a natural treatment plant was treated using a lab-scale filtration system with zeolite as a filter material. Three different column depths (0.5 m, 0.75 m, and 1 m) were used to investigate the effect of column depth on the treatment efficiency of the media. The suitability of the raw wastewater and the treated effluent from each column for irrigation purposes was investigated. The water quality parameters investigated were; electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+). From the analysis results, it was observed that the column depth had a significant influence on the removal efficiency of the pollutants. The highest removal efficiency (94.58%) was achieved from the combination of electrical conductivity and 1 m column depth, while the lowest removal efficiency (10.05%) was observed from the combination of calcium and 0.5 m column depth. The raw wastewater fell mostly into a “very high” hazard, which is class four (C4) based on electrical conductivity and class four (S4) based sodium adsorption ratio; making it unsuitable for irrigation purposes. However, when the wastewater was subjected to 1 m column depth, the quality of the treated effluent improved significantly which in turn also improved the suitability of the effluent for irrigation purposes, with percent compliance ranging from 20.19% to 97.54%.

Abstract
Dental enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, providing external protection for the tooth against masticatory forces, temperature changes and chemical stimuli. Once enamel is damaged/altered by genetic defects, dental caries, trauma, and/or dental wear, it cannot repair itself due to the loss of enamel producing cells following the tooth eruption. The current restorative dental materials are unable to replicate physico-mechanical, esthetic features and crystal structures of the native enamel. Thus, development of alternative approaches to repair and regenerate enamel defects is much needed but remains challenging due to the structural and functional complexities involved. This review paper summarizes the clinical aspects to be taken into consideration for the development of optimal therapeutic approaches to tackle dental enamel defects. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging acellular and cellular approaches proposed for enamel remineralization and regeneration. Acellular approaches aim to artificially synthesize or re-mineralize enamel, whereas cell-based strategies aim to mimic the natural process of enamel development given that epithelial cells can be stimulated to produce enamel postnatally during the adult life. The key issues and current challenges are also discussed here, along with new perspectives for future research to advance the field of regenerative dentistry.

Abstract
The present study has been carried out to evaluate the effects of piperazine and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) in the garden snail, Cornu aspersum. EDTA and piperazine-like chemicals are widely used in various pharmaceutical, household, and industrial applications. The snails after collection were kept in different earthen pots and treated with these chemicals at different concentrations. A higher concentration of these chemicals led to a change in foot color from light to dark brown and loss in average weight with time. It has been found that a 10-fold increase in piperazine and EDTA concentration reduces weight by approximately 12.7- and 11.6-fold, respectively. Further, the study provides an insight into the altered antimicrobial activity of crude extract when treated with ligands. Additionally, the variations in the electrolytes in the mucus sample have been observed with the mean standard deviation (± SD) of 6.4 and 2.4 for Na+ and K+ ions, respectively.

Abstract
Aims To compare the effect of CS and CSnp on the wettability in root dentine with other irrigation protocols with an experimental in vitro model prior regenerative endodontics. Methods and Material. An in vitro experimental study that included eighty hemisected human root distributed into 8 groups: G1- distilled water; G2- 1% NaOCl/17% EDTA; G3- hypochlorous acid 0.025% HOCl, G4- 1% NaOCl/0.025% HOCl/17% EDTA, G5- 0.2 g/100 mL CS, G6- 1% NaOCl/0.2 g/100 mL CS, G7- CSnp, and G8- 1% NaOCl/CSnp. The wettability analysis calculated the contact angle (θ) between a drop of a blood-like and root dentinal surface; topographic characterization with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) quantified the diameter and number of tubules per area; spectroscopy infrared analyses (IR-S) identified chemical changes in the inorganic (phosphate/carbonate) and organic phase (amide/methyl). Statistical analysis: a linear mixed model, Kruskal–Wallis, and Holm–Bonferroni correction (P < 0.05) were used. Results Significantly higher wettability for G2 (27.1 (P = 0.0001)) was found. A mean value of 67°±°for experimental groups (P = 0.07) was found, and we did not identify differences between them. The SEM identified greater tubular opening and erosion for G4 and greater dentinal permeability per area for NaOCl/CS. IR-S identified dentinal organic integrity with NaOCl-CS/CSnp compared to organic reduction promoted for NaOCl/EDTA. Conclusions This in vitro dentin determined an indirect association between the wettability and organic contents. The oxidative effect of NaOCl could be neutralized by CS-CSnp, and consequently, the wettability of the substrate decreases.

Abstract
Summary
Background/Aim: Many irrigation solutions are used during root canal treatment. It is unacceptable to confuse irrigation solutions with anesthetic solution and inadvertently inject the patient. After such an error, local and systemic serious complications can be seen in the patient. The purpose of this case report is to show how careless use of etilendiamin tetraacedic acid (EDTA) can result in important complications, and offer some treatment methods for curing symptoms resulting from such complications.
Case Report: A 17% EDTA solution, was inadvertently injected in the buccal mucosa of a 20-year-old male during routine root canal treatment. Severe pain, bleeding and mucosal swelling occurred shortly after the injection. Irrigation with saline was performed by sliding the mucoperiosteal flap at the injection site. Then the flap was sutured primary. At the control one week later, there were no areas of necrosis in the patient, but ecchymosis occurred. Decalcified areas were not detected in dental volumetric tomography examination.
Conclusions: The dentists must apply the precautions of EDTA irrigation solution during the root canal treatment and manage the treatment of this clinical complication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE TruNatomy and XP-endo Shaper are recently introduced file systems showing increased fatigue resistance rate. The present study aims to evaluate the surface topographic changes and nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti) elemental loss of XP-endo Shaper (XPS) and TruNatomy (TN) files on exposure to conventionally used root canal irrigants; [5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)] at a 10 minute time frame using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analytical techniques. METHODS Twelve samples for each of XPS (30/.04 taper) and TN (26/.04 taper; prime) instruments were dynamically exposed to 5.25% NaOCl, 17% EDTA separately for 10 minutes and in combination of 5.25% NaOCl (8 minutes)+17% EDTA (2 minutes) for a total of 10 minutes. Post exposure, the files were subjugated to AFM and EDX analysis. Independent t test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical analysis, and the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS XPS and TN showed a significant increase of surface roughness (Ra) and roughness mean square (RMS) on exposure to various irrigants (P<0.05) using AFM analysis. Increased overall roughness was observed with TN in comparison to XPS (P<0.05). Elements Ni and Ti loss was found in both XPS and TN files using EDX analysis. Both files exhibited Ni and Ti loss with the loss of Ni content higher for TN after exposure to 17% EDTA. Loss of Ti was seen for both files on exposure to a combination of 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA. CONCLUSION After exposure to root canal irrigants, the surface roughness was lesser in XPS compared to TN files. 17% EDTA caused significantly higher surface roughness in both file systems when compared to 5.25% NaOCl. TN exhibited overall higher elemental (Ni and Ti) loss on exposure to 17% EDTA and 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA in comparison to XPS files.

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate dentinal tubule penetration and the retreatability of EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow (HiFlow), iRoot SP, and AH Plus when using the single-cone (SC) or continuous wave condensation (CWC) technique. Materials and methods Sixty-five single-rooted teeth were instrumented and randomly divided into 5 groups: group 1, AH Plus/CWC; group 2, iRoot SP/CWC; group 3, iRoot SP/SC; group 4, HiFlow/CWC; and group 5, HiFlow/SC. The ability to re-establish patency during endodontic retreatment was recorded, as was the time taken to reach the working length. Dentinal tubule penetration and remaining debris after retreatment were evaluated by confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn’s multiple comparisons test (α = 0.05). Results The HiFlow/CWC and iRoot SP/CWC groups required more time to reach the working length than groups that underwent the SC technique regardless of the sealer used (P < .05). The HiFlow/CWC group showed a significantly higher percentage of sealer penetration area than that of the iRoot SP/SC at 4 mm from the apex (P < .05) and penetrated deeper into dentinal tubules than iRoot SP/SC at both 8-mm and 12-mm levels (P < .05). Moreover, the HiFlow/CWC and HiFlow/SC groups demonstrated less remaining sealer along the canal wall than AH Plus/CWC group at 4-mm level (P < .05). Conclusions HiFlow/CWC technique showed better performance in dentinal tubule penetration than that of iRoot SP/SC. Both HiFlow and iRoot SP combined with CWC technique groups required more retreatment time than the other groups. Furthermore, using HiFlow with either the CWC or SC technique left less remaining sealer at 4-mm level than using AH Plus with the CWC technique during retreatment. Clinical relevance With favorable performance in dentinal tubule penetration and retreatability in endodontic retreatment, the combined use of EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow with the recommended continuous wave condensation technique may be a worthwhile choice in root canal treatment.

Abstract
Biologically important ions such as Ca, K, Mg, Fe, and Zn play major roles in numerous biological processes, and their homeostatic balance is necessary for the maintenance of cellular activities. Sudden and severe loss in homeostasis of just one biologically important ion can cause a cascade of negative effects. The ability to quickly, accurately, and reliably quantify biologically important ions in samples of human bio-fluids is something that has been sorely lacking within the field of metabolomics. 1H-NMR spectra. The foundation of our investigation was the a-priori knowledge that free ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) produces two clear single peaks on 1H-NMR spectra, and that EDTA chelated to different ions produces unique 1H-NMR spectral patterns due to 3D conformational changes in the chemical structure of chelated-EDTA and varying degrees of electronegativity. The aim of this study was to develop and test a 1H-NMR-based method, with application specifically to the field of metabolomics, to quantify biologically important ions within the physiological pH range of 6.50-7.50 using EDTA as a chelating agent. Our method produced linear, accurate, precise, and repeatable results for Ca, Mg, and Zn; however, K and Fe did not chelate with EDTA.

Abstract
Due to the complex micro-anatomy of the root canal system, mechanical instrumentation leaves significant portions of the root canal walls untouched; therefore, complete elimination of bacteria from the root canal by cleaning with instrumentation alone is unlikely. It has long been postulated but not demonstrated, that any pulp tissue left in the root canals can serve as bacterial/fungal/viral (microorganism nutrients) nutrients. Furthermore, tissue remnants also impede the antimicrobial effects of root canal irrigants and medicaments and prevent intimate adaptation of the root canal filling to the dentin. Therefore, specific irrigation/disinfection procedures are necessary to remove tissue from the root canals and to kill microorganisms, respectively. The purpose of this paper was to review different aspects of a promising root canal irrigant; QMix. This is a relatively new root canal irrigant composed of traditional materials like chlorhexidine (CHX), ethylele diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), saline and a detergent. QMix is antibacterial, antifungal and has antibiofilm activities, it displays substantivity, smear layer removing ability; moreover, its effect on dentin and retention of fiber posts etc. has been reviewed. There have been strong reports that show the chemical design of QMix prevents precipitation of CHX when together with EDTA and mixing with sodium hypochlorite does not produce the orange-brown precipitate. Furthermore, the smear layer removal ability of QMix is comparable to that of 17% EDTA and the antibacterial activity of QMix was greater than 1% and 2% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 2% CHX.

Abstract
The combination of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been advocated as an effective irrigation methodology to remove organic and inorganic matter in root canal therapy. Yet, it was suggested that both solutions might lead to structural changes of the dentinal wall surface, depending on the order of application which might affect sealer mechanical retention. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different irrigating protocols on dentin surface roughness using quantitative 3D surface texture analysis. Data stems from 150 human root dentin sections, divided into five groups, each prepared according to one of the following protocols: Negative control; 17% EDTA; 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl; and 5.25% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA. Each dentin sample was examined for its three-dimensional surface texture using a high-resolution confocal disc-scanning measuring system. EDTA 17% and the combined EDTA 17% with NaOCl 5.25% showed considerably higher roughness properties compared to the control and to NaOCl 5.25% alone. However, the irrigation sequence did not affect the dentin roughness properties. Therefore, mechanical retention is probably not dependent upon the selection of irrigation protocol sequence.

Abstract
The reconstruction or repair of oral and maxillofacial functionalities and aesthetics is a priority for patients affected by tooth loss, congenital defects, trauma deformities, or various dental diseases. Therefore, in dental medicine, tissue reconstruction represents a major interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, endodontics, and even daily clinical practice. The current clinical approaches involve a vast array of techniques ranging from the traditional use of tissue grafts to the most innovative regenerative procedures, such as tissue engineering. In recent decades, a wide range of both artificial and natural biomaterials and scaffolds, genes, stem cells isolated from the mouth area (dental follicle, deciduous teeth, periodontal ligament, dental pulp, salivary glands, and adipose tissue), and various growth factors have been tested in tissue engineering approaches in dentistry, with many being proven successful. However, to fully eliminate the problems of traditional bone and tissue reconstruction in dentistry, continuous research is needed. Based on a recent literature review, this paper creates a picture of current innovative strategies applying dental stem cells for tissue regeneration in different dental fields and maxillofacial surgery, and offers detailed information regarding the available scientific data and practical applications.

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of phytic acid and ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) in the removal of calcium ion from radicular dentin during endodontic procedure. Materials and Methods Twenty-five single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth were decoronated, and the roots were split longitudinally into two halves. Among obtained specimens, 45 specimens were randomly selected and divided into three groups (n = 15): Group 1 - distilled water, Group 2 - 17% EDTA, and Group 3 - 1% phytic acid. Samples in each group were immersed in the test solutions for specific time intervals, after which the same solution samples were subjected for the evaluation of amount of calcium ion release into the solution by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance test. Results The use of 17% EDTA resulted in more calcium ion loss as compared to 1% phytic acid and distilled water. Conclusion One percent phytic acid seems to be an appropriate irrigating solution because of its less demineralizing effect as compared to 17% EDTA on radicular dentin.

Abstract
Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 2% sodium fluoride (NaF) as endodontic irrigants on microhardness of root dentin.
Materials and Methods
In this
in vitro
study, access cavity and root canal preparations were done on 24 freshly extracted anterior teeth. After sectioning into 24 dentin discs using hard tissue microtome in 2 mm thickness, all samples were immersed in solutions of 17% ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) (2 minutes) followed by 2.5% of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (10 minutes). Then samples were randomly divided into three groups based on the irrigant used: Group I: saline (control group); Group II: 2% NaF; Group III: 2% CHG for two minutes each. Dentin microhardness was measured before (pretreatment), during (after treatment with 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl), and after the experimental period (after treatment with saline, 2% NaF, and 2% CHG) using a Vickers indenter. Statistical evaluation of the data was done using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Student’s
t
-test, and the values are tabulated.
Results
Specimens rinsed in 2% CHG showed a significant increase in Vickers hardness number (VHN) values (
p
< 0.05), as compared with EDTA and NaOCl groups, whereas saline and 2% NaF groups showed no significant difference.
Conclusions
NaF did not show any significant effect on microhardness of the root dentin. CHG as an irrigant was seen to have a strengthening effect on dentin microhardness in comparison to NaOCl and EDTA, which has decreased the strength of root dentin.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to compare radicular smear layer removal ability of different solutions of phytic acid (PA) with other chelating agents when used in specific irrigant protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy four maxillary central incisors were collected, standardized, and canals were prepared. A total of 5% sodium hypochlorite was used as the initial rinse solution (8mL). Samples were divided into control (Group I-normal saline and II-7% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and experimental groups (Group III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII) based on the type of final rinse solution used, that is, 5% PA, 10% PA, 17% PA, 5% citric acid (CA), 10% CA, and 17% CA (5mL). Samples were coded, buccolingually divided into two halves, dehydrated, mounted, splutter coated, and examined under scanning electron microscope. RESULTS Group IV had the least smear and debris in coronal, middle, and apical thirds with mean scores of 1.06 and 1.3, respectively. When compared with Group II, no statistically significant difference was found (P > 0.05). Overall, the Group III had the lowest erosion scores at apical, middle, and coronal one-third with a mean of 1.68. Group VII had the highest amount of erosion with loss of peritubular and intertubular dentin at all levels. CONCLUSION The role of PA as final rinse solution for the removal of radicular smear is promising and comparable to other chelating agents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a commonly used compound in laboratory medicine, is known for its membrane-destabilization capacity and cell-detaching effect. This preliminary study aims to assess the potential of EDTA in removing residual tumor cell clusters. Using an in-vitro model, this effect is then compared to the cytotoxic effect of oxaliplatin which is routinely administered during HIPEC procedures. The overall cell toxicity and cell detaching effects of EDTA are compared to those of Oxaliplatin and the additive effect is quantified. METHODS HT-29 (ATCC® HTB-38™) cells were treated with A) EDTA only B) Oxaliplatin only and C) both agents using an in-vitro model. Cytotoxicity and cell detachment following EDTA application were measured via colorimetric MTS assay. Additionally, detached cell groups were visualized using light microscopy and further analyzed by means of electron microscopy. RESULTS When solely applied, EDTA does not exhibit any cell toxicity nor does it add any toxicity to oxaliplatin. However, EDTA enhances the detachment of adherent colon carcinoma cells by removing up to 65% (p<0.05) of the total initial cell amount. In comparison, the sole application of highly concentrated oxaliplatin induced cell mortality by up to 66% (p<0.05). While detached cells showed no mortality after EDTA treatment, cell clusters exhibited a decreased amount of extracellular and adhesive matrix in-between cells. When combined, Oxaliplatin and EDTA display a significant additive effect with only 30% (mean p <0.01) of residual vitality detected in the initial well. EDTA and Oxaliplatin remove up to 81% (p <0.01) of adhesive HT-29 cells from the surface either by cytotoxic effects or cell detachment. CONCLUSION Our data support EDTA's potential to remove microscopical tumor cell clusters from the peritoneum and possibly act as a supplementary agent in HIPEC procedures with chemotherapy. While adding EDTA to HIPEC procedures may significantly decrease the risk of PM recurrence, further in-vivo and clinical trials are required to evaluate this effect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Removal of obturating materials from the root canal during retreatment is usually accomplished by mechanical means and organic solvents to dissolve the gutta-percha. This strategy is ineffective on sealers. The aim of this research was to assess the efficacy of mechanical instrumentation aided by targeted chemical means for removal of hydraulic sealers. METHODS A preliminary study assessed the effect of 17% EDTA and 10/20% formic acid applied for 5 or 10 min on dentine and for 5 min on Totalfill BC sealer (FKG). Microhardness and structural integrity by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were investigated. The optimal solutions were used as adjuncts to mechanical instrumentation to remove obturations made with single cone using a standard gutta-percha and bioceramic coated gutta-percha and Totalfill BC sealer. The removal of obturation material from the root canal system of obturated teeth was evaluated using microcomputed tomography. The canal patency and reestablishment of working length were also checked. RESULTS The preliminary study showed that 17% EDTA and 10% formic acid applied for 5 min did not damage the dentine but effected the structural integrity of the sealer. 10% formic acid used in conjunction with mechanical instrumentation was the most efficient method to remove the obturation material from the root canal, achieving over 95% removal for both gutta-percha and the bioceramic coated version and also achieve patency and reestablishment of working length. CONCLUSIONS The use of a targeted irrigation protocol with a chemical adjunct to the mechanical instrumentation is the best way to retreat teeth obturated with hydraulic calcium silicate sealer and gutta-percha.

Abstract
Objective: To validate the capability of the dual wavelength laser (Er,Cr:YSGG and diode 940 nm) and the XP-Endoshaper and finisher in removing the smear layer from curved canals. Methods: Forty curved root canals were prepared using the R25 file of the Reciproc® system. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups: G1: negative control irrigated with distilled water, G2: positive control irrigated with EDTA 17% and a final rinse of NaOCl 3%, G3: XP-Endoshaper and finisher with EDTA 17%, G4: dual wavelength Er,Cr:YSGG (1.25 W, 50 Hz, 50 μs) and diode 940 nm (2 W, 50% DC), and G5: dual wavelength Er,Cr:YSGG (2 W, 20 Hz, 50 μs) and diode 940 nm (2 W, 50% DC). Laser scanning microscope images (1000 × ) were scored with the Hülsmann scoring system. Results: Superior smear layer removal was observed in G5 in comparison with G4, especially in the apical third of the canal. Furthermore, the XP-Endoshaper and finisher exhibited positive results in all parts of the canal. Conclusions: The higher power output of the Er,Cr:YSGG in the dual wavelength laser may be a suitable approach to remove the smear layer from the apical third of curved canals. Moreover, the XP-Endoshaper and finisher with EDTA could expose the dentinal tubules, however, the negative side effects of applying EDTA 17% for longer periods must be taken into consideration. This work is clinically significant as it addresses the main aim of endodontic treatment and provides a suitable method to remove the debris, smear layer, and bacterial remnants from the clinically challenging curved root canals.

Abstract
Background:
Root canal irrigation is one of the most important stages during root canal treatment. One of the requirements of root canal irrigation material is that it can eradicate the smear layer but does not alter the physical properties of the root canal dentin.
Objective:
To investigate the effect of chitosan nanoparticle as a final irrigation solution on the smear layer removal, micro-hardness and surface roughness of root canal dentin.
Methods:
Seventy-two premolars used in this study and divided by three evaluations, namely smear layer removal, micro-hardness and surface roughness. Each study used 24 teeth and was assigned randomly into three groups of eight teeth. Group-1, final irrigation with 17% EDTA; group-2, with 0.2% chitosan nanoparticles; group-3, with 2.5% NaOCl. Specimens were evaluated for smear layer removal, micro-hardness and surface roughness using a Scanning Electron Microscope, Vickers hardness tester and surface roughness measuring instrument, respectively. Data obtained from smear layer removal evaluation were statically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U and data from micro-hardness and surface roughness were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test.
Results:
Final irrigation using 0.2% chitosan nanoparticles produced similar smear layer removal than 17% EDTA (P>0.05), but it was greater than 2.5% NaOCl (P<0.05). Chitosan had higher micro-hardness and lower surface roughness than EDTA (P<0.05), but it was the same as 2.5% NaOCl (P>0.05).
Conclusion:
Final irrigation using 0.2% chitosan nanoparticles had the same effect on smear layer removal compared to 17% EDTA; however, 0.2% chitosan produced higher micro-hardness and lower surface roughness of root canal dentin than 17% EDTA.

Abstract
This study reports the endodontic treatment performed in a patient who presented with spontaneous bone exposure in the mandible while using intravenous bisphosphonate medication (Zometa , Novartis Pharmaceuticals Co., Basel, Switzerland). A 63-year-old female patient was referred to a private dental clinic at Fortaleza, Brazil. The patient reported that one year before, she had undergone chemotherapy for the treatment of lung cancer and associated bone metastasis. Among the medications administered was the zolendronic acid, with dosage of 4 mg every 21 days. In the oral exam, the presence of extensive bone exposure was observed in the lingual region near tooth 37. The patient reported severe pain on palpation in the region; in the pulpal sensitivity test with cold stimulus, there was an absence of pain, characteristic of pulp necrosis. Radiographically, no periapical lesion was observed. Thus, endodontic treatment was performed, and instrumentation with Reciproc R25 files in the mesial root canals and R40 in the distal canal was done, alongside with abundant 2.5% sodium hypochlorite irrigation. Interappointment medication with calcium hydroxide was maintained for 15 days. In the second session, there was the spontaneous detachment of the exposed cortical bone fragment. The root canals were filled with gutta-percha and Endosequence BC Sealer cement. After two years, complete tissue repair was observed, and the patient presented with normal periapical tissues and the tooth in masticatory function. It may be concluded that a possible relationship between pulp and periapical infections and osteonecrosis exists in patients who use bisphosphonates.

Abstract
The European Society of Endodontology and the American Association for Endodontists have released position statements and clinical considerations for regenerative endodontics. There is increasing literature on this field since the initial reports of Iwaya et al. (Dental Traumatology, 17, 2001, 185) and Banchs & Trope (Journal of Endodontics, 30, 2004, 196). Endogenous stem cells from an induced periapical bleeding and scaffolds using blood clot, platelet rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin have been utilized in regenerative endodontics. This approach has been described as a 'paradigm shift' and considered the first treatment option for immature teeth with pulp necrosis. There are three treatment outcomes of regenerative endodontics; (i) resolution of clinical signs and symptoms; (ii) further root maturation; and (iii) return of neurogenesis. It is known that results are variable for these objectives, and true regeneration of the pulp/dentine complex is not achieved. Repair derived primarily from the periodontal and osseous tissues has been shown histologically. It is hoped that with the concept of tissue engineering, namely stem cells, scaffolds and signalling molecules, that true pulp regeneration is an achievable goal. This review discusses current knowledge as well as future directions for regenerative endodontics. Patient-centred outcomes such as tooth discolouration and possibly more appointments with the potential for adverse effects needs to be discussed with patients and parents. Based on the classification of Cvek (Endodontics and Dental Traumatology, 8, 1992, 45), it is proposed that regenerative endodontics should be considered for teeth with incomplete root formation although teeth with near or complete root formation may be more suited for conventional endodontic therapy or MTA barrier techniques. However, much is still not known about clinical and biological aspects of regenerative endodontics.

Abstract
We present a novel superstructure fiber Bragg grating fiber end sensor capable of detecting variations in refractive index (RI) of liquids and potentially that of gases, and demonstrated an application in the detection of heavy metal ions in water. The sensor is capable of sensing RI variations in the range of 1.333 to 1.470 with good sensitivity of up to 230 dB/RIU achieved for the RI range of 1.370 to 1.390. The sensor is capable of simultaneously measuring variations in ambient temperature along with RI. A simple chemical coating was employed as a chelating agent for heavy metal ion detection at the fiber end to demonstrate an possible application of the sensor. The coated fiber sensor can conclusively detect the presence of heavy metal ions with concentrations upwards of 100 ppm. RI sensing capability of the sensor is neither affected by temperature nor strain and is both robust and easily reproducible.

Abstract
Titanium (Ti) dental implants are susceptible to bacterial infections and failure due to lack of proper epithelial seal. Epithelial cells establish a strong epithelial seal around natural teeth by the deposition of basal lamina (BL) proteins that adsorb on the tooth surface. This seal can even be re-established onto cementum or dentin following injury or periodontal therapy. However, it is unclear how tooth surfaces promote this cell attachment and protein adsorption. Understanding the interactions between BL proteins and epithelial cells with dentin and Ti will facilitate the development of implant surfaces that promote the formation of an epithelial seal and improve the success of periodontal therapy and wound healing on natural teeth. To study these interactions, we used a surface proteomic approach to decipher the adsorption profile of BL proteins onto Ti and dentin, and correlated these adsorption profiles with in vitro interactions of human gingival fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Results showed that dentin adsorbed higher amounts of key BL proteins, particularly laminin and nidogen-1, and promoted more favorable interactions with epithelial cells than Ti. Next, dentin specimens were deproteinized or partially demineralized to determine if its mineral or protein component was responsible for BL adsorption and cell attachment. Deproteinized (mineral-rich) and partially demineralized (protein-rich) dentin specimens revealed BL proteins (i.e. laminin and nidogen-1) and epithelial cells interact preferentially with dentinal proteins rather than dentin mineral. These findings suggest that, unlike Ti, dentin and, in particular, dentinal proteins have a selective affinity to BL proteins that enhance epithelial cell attachment. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE It is remains unclear why natural teeth, unlike titanium dental implants, promote the formation of an epithelial seal that protects them against the external environment. This study used a surface screening approach to analyze the adsorption of proteins produced by epithelial tissues onto tooth-dentin and titanium surfaces, and correlate it with the behaviour of cells. This study shows that tooth-dentin, in particular its proteins, has a higher selective affinity to certain adhesion proteins, and subsequently allows more favourable interactions with epithelial cells than titanium. This knowledge could help in developing new approaches for re-establishing and maintaining the epithelial seal around teeth, and could pave the way for developing implants with surfaces that allow the formation of a true epithelial seal.

Abstract
Unlike other antiresorptive medications, bisphosphonate molecules accumulate in the bone matrix. Previous studies of side-effects of anti-resorptive treatment focused mainly on systemic effects. We hypothesize that matrix-bound bisphosphonate molecules contribute to the pathogenesis of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). In this study, we examined the effect of matrix-bound bisphosphonates on osteoclast differentiation in vitro using TRAP staining and resorption assay, with and without pretreatment with EDTA. We also tested the effect of zoledronate chelation on the healing of post-extraction defect in rats. Our results confirmed that bisphosphonates bind to, and can be chelated from, mineralized matrix in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. Matrix-bound bisphosphonates impaired the differentiation of osteoclasts, evidenced by TRAP activity and resorption assay. Zoledronate-treated rats that underwent bilateral dental extraction with unilateral EDTA treatment showed significant improvement in mucosal healing and micro-CT analysis on the chelated sides. The results suggest that matrix-bound bisphosphonates are accessible to osteoclasts and chelating agents and contribute to the pathogenesis of BRONJ. The use of topical chelating agents is a promising strategy for the prevention of BRONJ following dental procedures in bisphosphonate-treated patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As the root canal system considered to be complex and unpredictable, using root canal irrigants and medicaments are essential in order to enhance the disinfection of the canal. Sodium hypochlorite is the most common irrigant in endodontics. Despite its excellent antimicrobial activity and tissue solubility, sodium hypochlorite lacks some important properties such as substantivity and smear layer removing ability. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review was to address benefits and drawbacks of combining sodium hypochlorite with other root canal irrigants and medicaments. DISCUSSION According to the reviewed articles, NaOCl is the most common irrigation solution in endodontics. However, it has some drawbacks such as inability to remove smear layer. One of the drawbacks of NaOCl is its inability to remove the smear layer and lack of substantivity. CONCLUSION The adjunctive use of other materials has been suggested to improve NaOCl efficacy. Nevertheless, further studies are required in this field.

Abstract
Commonly used irrigants do not always eradicate the entire microbial flora in infected root canals. Therefore, several other strategies, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been developed. Photoactivated disinfection is based on the interaction of a photosensitive antibacterial agent and a light source. It uses a nontoxic dye named photosensitizer (PS) and low-intensity visible light. In oxygen presentation, these combine to produce some cytotoxic species. The PS molecules attach to bacteria membrane. Irradiation with a specific wavelength of the light may lead to the production of singlet oxygen, resulting in rupture of the microbial cell wall. There are several applications for PDT in dentistry. A successful periodontal treatment is based on elimination of bacteria from the infected area. Phenothiazinium PSs have been shown to be highly effective and safe for this purpose. However, scaling/root planing should be performed before the PDT. While performing the PDT, PS should be first injected in the periodontal pocket and allowed to pigment. Then, the special fiber should be inserted 1 mm short of the pocket base and lased. Photodynamic therapy has also been used to disinfect caries dentin before restoration, disinfecting oral tissues before or during surgical procedures, treating denture stomatitis, and treating oral candidiasis in immunocompromised patients. Photodynamic therapy can be used in combination with mechanical instrumentation and chemical antimicrobial agents, such as sodium hypochlo-rite, too. The purpose of this study was to review historical perspective, mechanism of action, and applications of PDT in dentistry and especially in endodontics was reviewed. Furthermore, the effects of PDT on dentin bonding and endo-toxin are discussed. Abstract
Microorganisms have been considered to have played a critical role in the initiation and development of pulpo-periapical diseases. Some evidences have shown that mechanical instrumentation may leave considerable portions of canal surfaces undebrided. Therefore, some supplemental methods, such as the use of chemical solutions and/or lasers, have been introduced to further disinfect the complicated canal anatomy and destroy as many microorganisms as possible. The purpose of this review was to address a brief review of characteristics of lasers and their effects to disinfect the root canal in endodontics.

Abstract
Objective: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a common antimicrobial and tissue-dissolving irrigant. The aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate and compare dissolution capacities of sodium hypochlorite solutions after electrically activation (E-NaOCl) on bovine muscle specimens at various time periods and concentrations. Materials and Methods: Three sodium hypochlorite solutions of 1.25%, 2.5%, and 5% were tested at 3-min. and 5-min. with and without activation by electrically. Distilled water and NaOCl solutions without electrically activation were used as controls. Pieces of bovine muscle tissue (34 ± 2 mg) were placed in 10 mL of each solution at room temperature. In the group of E-NaOCl, electrically activation was performed through the potentiostat. The tissue specimens were weighed before and after treatment, and the percentage of weight loss was calculated. Results: Weight loss of the tissue increased with the concentration of E-NaOCl and NaOCl. Higher concentration and electrically activation considerably enhanced the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite. The effect of electrically activation on tissue dissolution was much greater than that of same concentrations in the groups of NaOCl (P < 0.001). Tissue weight loss was significantly higher in 2.5% and 5% E-NaOCl at 3 min. than in 2.5% and 5% NaOCl at 5 min. (P < 0.05). There were not any significant differences between the 2.5% E-NaOCl and 5% NaOCl at 5 min. (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Electrically activation can improve the tissue-dissolving effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite.
