Abstract
Background Cataract surgery has evolved over the years. This study aims to highlight the profile of the patients that underwent cataract surgery at a tertiary hospital with emphasis on patient demographics, surgical techniques performed, intraocular lens powers implanted, and the complications managed. Methodology A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study of all patients who had undergone cataract surgery within two years at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, Nigeria. Data extracted from the electronic version of the manual cataract surgical records included the patient's age, sex, comorbidities, technique of cataract surgery performed, the intraocular lens powers implanted, and complications encountered. Intraoperative and postoperative complications up to the twelfth week were considered. All patients had biometry-guided intraocular lens implantation. Results One thousand four hundred and seventy- two (1,472) patient records of all ages met the inclusion criteria with a male-female ratio of 1.4:1. The mean age was 51.4 ± 22.6 years. The difference in the mean age of the sexes was statistically significant (p=0.01) and 95% CI was 7.37- 10.40 years. Glaucoma was the commonest ocular comorbidity 142(9.65%) and only 5% (74) had systemic comorbidities. The mean intraocular lens (IOL) power was 19.25 ± 1.8Diopters (Range 10.5D to 26D). The commonest surgery performed was small incision cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implant (SICS + PCIOL) 91.2% followed by Trabeculectomy with SICS + PCIOL (3.87%). Phacoemulsification accounted for 2.72% of surgeries. Intra-operative complications were posterior capsular rent in 7.1% (104) and vitreous loss in 4% (58). The commonest post-operative complications were corneal edema6.9% (103) and striae keratopathy 4.6% (68). Conclusion Most cataract patients were male, above 50years of age and likely to be older than the females at surgery. The most performed surgical technique was small incision cataract surgery with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation (SICS + PCIOL) while the mean intra-ocular lens power was 19.25 ± 1.8Dioptres. Globally accepted cataract surgical techniques utilizing recent technological advancements were employed with biometry-guided intraocular lens power calculation and implantation. Complications fell within the accepted global rates.

Abstract
AIM To investigate sex-based differences in the occurrence of intra-operative and post-operative complications and associated visual outcomes following cataract surgery. METHODS This was a retrospective study of patients who had phacoemulsification cataract surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Data collected included the patient's health history, ocular comorbidities, operative and post-operative complications, and the post-operative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The data were analyzed using univariate and multivariable logistic regression with generalized estimating equations to account for the correlation of some patients having two eyes included in the study. RESULTS A total of 11 977 eyes from 7253 patients were included in the study. Ocular comorbidities differed by sex, with males having significantly higher percentages of traumatic cataracts (males 0.7% vs females 0.1%), prior ocular surgery (6.7% vs 5.5%), and mature cataracts (2.8% vs 1.9%). Conversely, females had significantly higher rates of pseudoexfoliation (2.0% vs 3.2%). In unadjusted analysis, males had higher rates of posterior capsular rupture (0.8% vs 0.4%) and vitreous loss (1.0% vs 0.6%), but this difference was not significant after adjustment for confounders. Males had a significantly increased risk of post-operative retinal detachment, but in multivariable analysis this was no longer significant. Males were significantly less likely to undergo post-operative neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification (OR=0.8, 95%CI=0.7-0.9, P=0.0005). The BCVA was slightly worse for males pre-operatively; but post-operatively, both sexes exhibited similar visual acuity of Snellen equivalent 20/25. CONCLUSION The study finds that in a cohort of patients presenting for cataract surgery, sex differences exist in pre-operative comorbidities and surgical characteristics that contribute to higher rates of some complications for males. However, observed surgical complication rates exhibit almost no difference by sex after adjusting for pre-operative differences and post-operative BCVA is similar between sexes.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the distribution of corneal biomechanical parameters in an elderly population. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in subjects above 60 years living in Tehran. The participants were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling. Corneal biomechanical parameters were measured in a randomly selected subsample of this population using the Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer (Reichert Ophthalmic Instruments, Inc., Buffalo, NY, USA). Results Of 470 subjects, the data of 420 participants aged over 60 years were analyzed (mean age: 69.3 ± 6.5 years and range: 61-88 years), 363 (86.4%) of whom were male. The mean and standard deviation of corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were 8.37 ± 1.55 mmHg (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.02-8.72) and 9.06 ± 1.70 mmHg (95% CI: 8.69-9.44), respectively. The mean CH was 8.27 ± 1.54 mmHg in men and 9.25 ± 1.28 mmHg in women, and the mean CRF was 9.00 ± 1.71 mmHg in men and 9.63 ± 1.37 mmHg in women. According to the results of multiple linear logistic regression analysis, CH had a significant association with younger age (β = -0.05, P = 0.032), female sex (β = 1.83, P < 0.001), reduced maximum keratometry (β = -0.22, P = 0.06), and increased anterior chamber volume (β = 0.01, P = 0.007). CRF had a significant correlation with a younger age (β = -0.06, P = 0.02), female sex (β = 1.01, P = 0.05), central corneal thickness (β = 0.02, P < 0.001), and reduced maximum keratometry (β = -0.39, P = 0.010). Conclusion The mean CH and CRF values were low in this sample of the Iranian population aged over 60 years indicating the weaker elasticity of the corneal connective tissue.

Abstract
Introduction Cataract being one of the leading causes of avertible blindness has been found to be quite prevalent in developing countries like India. The National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) aims at reducing blindness due to cataract via cataract control programs. The most commonly performed surgery is the manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). Aim The aim of this study was to determine the visual acuity and outcome in patients who underwent MSICS in a tertiary hospital in south India. Methodology A prospective longitudinal interventional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Karnataka, India, over a period of nine months. A total of 105 eyes underwent MSICS and were followed up for one month to assess their postoperative visual outcome and complications, if any. During this period, they were started on antibiotic + steroid combination eyedrops, which were tapered over four weeks. Results Results were assessed based on visual grading categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO). A total of 103 (98.1%) patients had good vision, i.e., visual acuity of 6/6 - 6/18, followed by two (1.9%) who had moderate vision i.e., visual acuity of <6/18 - 3/60, and none were blind or with visual acuity of <3/60. Complications seen intraoperatively in two patients (1.9%) were iris prolapse and posterior capsular rent, respectively, and postoperatively one (0.95%) patient showed hyphema with inferior haptic in the anterior chamber. Conclusion This study proves that a good visual outcome with a low complication rate can be achieved after MSICS with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Survivors of Ebola virus disease (EVD) may experience ocular sequelae. Comparison with antibody-negative individuals from the local population is required to characterize the disease. OBJECTIVE To assess features of ophthalmic disease specific to EVD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This baseline cross-sectional analysis of survivors of EVD and their close contacts was conducted within PREVAIL III, a 5-year, longitudinal cohort study. Participants who enrolled at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Liberia, West Africa from June 2015 to March 2016 were included in this analysis. Close contacts were defined as household members or sex partners of survivors of EVD. Data were analyzed from July 2016 to July 2020. EXPOSURES All participants, both survivors and close contacts, underwent testing of IgG antibody levels against Ebola virus surface glycoprotein. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Ocular symptoms, anterior and posterior ophthalmologic examination findings, and optical coherence tomography images were compared between antibody-positive survivors and antibody-negative close contacts. RESULTS A total of 564 antibody-positive survivors (320 [56.7%] female; mean [SD] age, 30.3 [14.0] years) and 635 antibody-negative close contacts (347 [54.6%] female; mean [SD] age, 25.8 [15.5] years) were enrolled in this study. Survivors were more likely to demonstrate color vision deficit (28.9% vs 19.0%, odds ratio [OR], 1.6; 95% CI, 1.2-2.1) and lower intraocular pressure (12.4 vs 13.5 mm Hg; mean difference, -1.2 mm Hg; 95% CI, -1.6 to -0.8 mm Hg) compared with close contacts. Dilated fundus examination revealed a higher percentage of vitreous cells (7.8% vs 0.5%; OR, 16.6; 95% CI, 5.0-55.2) and macular scars (4.6% vs 1.6%; OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.4-5.5) in survivors than in close contacts. Uveitis was present in 26.4% of survivors and 12.1% of close contacts (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.8-3.2). Among all participants with uveitis, survivors were more likely than close contacts to have intermediate uveitis (34.2% vs 6.5% of all cases; OR, 7.8; 95% CI, 3.1-19.7) and had thicker mean central subfield thickness on optical coherence tomography (222 vs 212 μm; mean difference, 14.4 μm; 95% CI, 1.9-26.9 μm). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this cross-sectional study, survivors of EVD had a distinct spectrum of ocular and neuro-ophthalmologic findings compared with close contacts that potentially require medical and surgical treatment.

Abstract
Purpose: To determine the preoperative visual acuity of cataract patients over a 10-year period in a tertiary facility as a means of auditing the cataract surgical services. Methods: A retrospective study of patients with age-related cataracts who had cataract surgery performed between January 2007 and December 2016 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Systematic random sampling and probability proportionate to size were used to recruit a representative sample. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, preoperative visual acuity, ocular and systemic comorbidities were retrieved and analysed. Results: Of the 499 patients studied, males were 268 (53.7%) and their mean age was 67.69 (±9.51) years. The predominant visual acuity was hand motion 184 (36.9%) and yearly mean preoperative visual acuity was in the range of 0.0037–0.04 decimal. Conclusion: The mean preoperative visual acuity of patients in this facility did not change over the 10-year study period. Mean value of preoperative visual acuity remained within the range of blindness and did not improve over the decade. This could either be a reflection of visual impairment at which our patients seek care or an indication of the range of visual acuities at which surgeons are willing to offer cataract surgery in our environment. This trend has negative implications on the burden of cataract blindness as it reflects poor coverage of surgery for other levels of visual impairment due to cataract.
