Effect of sodium hyaluronate eye drops combined with tobramycin, dexamethasone and pranoprofen eye drops in the treatment of dry eye after phacoemulsification

Use of Pranoprofen After Strabismus Surgery in Children

Objectives: The aim of our study is to evaluate the efficacy of pranoprofen 0.1% in preventing the occurrence of postoperative complications, including postoperative ocular inflammation after strabismus surgery in children. Methods: 90 children operated on for strabismus in the Department of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus of the Medical University of Bialystok between 2022 and 2023 were included in the study. The patients were aged from 2 to 17 years old. Patients were divided into three groups of 30 patients according to the method of topical postoperative treatment (group I: tobramycin, pranoprofen, dexpanthenol; group II: tobramycin, dexamethasone, dexpanthenol; group III: tobramycin, pranoprofen, dexamethasone, dexpanthenol). Patients were followed up the day after surgery, on postoperative day 14 and then 3 months after surgery. Results: No child showed signs of postoperative infection. There was one case of allergic reaction each in groups I and III. Most complications were present in group II (six cases: there were allergic reactions that occurred in three patients. Two patients experienced a complication in the form of delle, while one patient developed a granuloma), which was a statistically significant difference compared to groups I and III (p = 0.032). Conclusions: Pranoprofen used postoperatively is as effective as a glucocorticosteroid, and from our observations, carries fewer complications in cases requiring prolonged use of the anti-inflammatory treatment. Systematic postoperative follow-up is essential for the diagnosis and possible management of postsurgical complications.

Clinical Efficacy of Tobramycin Dexamethasone+Pranoprofen Eye Drops on Endophthalmitis in Cataract Patients Complicated with Diabetes Mellitus after Intraocular Lens Implantation

BACKGROUND

There is little research on the anti-inflammatory efficacy and safety of tobramycin dexamethasone+pranoprofen eye drops in treating endophthalmitis.

AIM

To appraise the efficacy and safety of tobramycin dexamethasone+propranolofen eye drops in the treatment of endophthalmitis.

METHODS

The degree of corneal edema, foveal thickness, score of anterior chamber (AC) flares, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fasting blood glucose, inflammatory indexes of serum and aqueous humor, and adverse reactions were observed every week.

RESULTS

After the intervention with tobramycin dexamethasone+pranoprofen eye drops, corneal edema and foveal thickness reduced, BCVA improved, and the inflammatory markers in serum and aqueous humor decreased. Moreover, the incidence of adverse reactions in the tobramycin dexamethasone+pranoprofen group was lower than that in the control group and the fluorometholone group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Tobramycin dexamethasone+pranoprofen eye drops can inhibit inflammation better, recover vision faster, and make the incidence of adverse reactions lower in treating cataract patients complicated with DM developing endophthalmitis induced.

The efficacy of tobramycin dexamethasone combined with pranoprofen in middle-aged and elderly post-cataract patients and the value of improving inflammatory factor levels

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the effect of tobramycin dexamethasone combined with pranoprofen on middle-aged and elderly patients after cataract surgery.

METHODS

In this retrospective study, the clinical data from 108 middle-aged and elderly patients who had cataract surgery in the Second Hospital of Longyan between January 2021 and December 2023 were collected. The patients were divided into two groups based on treatment methods, a control group (n=54) that received tobramycin dexamethasone treatment, and an observation group (n=54) that treated with additional pranoprofen. The treatment effects in the two groups were compared.

RESULTS

Significant differences were observed between the groups at 1 day, 1 week, 3 weeks, and 5 weeks post-treatment in terms of ocular symptom scores, signs scores, and intraocular pressure levels (all P < 0.05). The observation group demonstrated lower levels of inflammatory markers post-treatment (P < 0.05). Additionally, at 1 week, 3 weeks and 5 weeks after treatment, significant differences were noted in anterior chamber flare value, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), macular center thickness, degree of corneal edema, and posterior lens capsular opacity grading scores (all P < 0.05). The incidence of increased intraocular pressure and conjunctival congestion was 3.7% in the observation group, slightly lower than 7.41% in the control group (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The combination of pranoprofen and tobramycin dexamethasone can improve the inflammatory reaction, ocular symptoms, anterior chamber flare value, macular center thickness, corneal oedema, and clarity of the posterior lens capsule in middle-aged and elderly cataract patients. This regimen also helps restore intraocular pressure and visual acuity of the patients, with relatively low adverse reactions, indicating an ideal clinical outcome.

Efficacy of Adding Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops to Tobramycin and Dexamethasone in the Treatment of Post-Cataract Surgery Dry Eye Disease: A Retrospective Analysis and Prospective Questionnaire Assessment

Purpose

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of using a combination of antibiotic and corticosteroid eye drops to using the same combination in addition to sodium hyaluronate eye drops.

Patients and Methods

This study included patients who underwent phacoemulsification for age-related cataract and presented to the ophthalmology department or outpatient clinic of the two hospitals in the study with DED during the period from January 2020 to January 2023. The study involved a two-pronged approach in which we retrospectively analyzed the prospectively maintained data of the patients and prospectively called the patients for an evaluation of the dry eye impact on vision-related function. The study patients were recruited from two hospitals. During the study period, patients who were treated with a combination of antibiotic and corticosteroid eye drops were enrolled in Group A, and those who were treated with the same combination with sodium hyaluronate eye drops were enrolled in Group B.

Results

The present study included 143 patients with post-phacoemulsification DED. Group A included 70 patients, and Group B included 73 patients. There was statistically significant improvement 4 weeks after treatment (p < 0.05) in the two groups. Comparing the two groups showed statistically significant improvements in group B compared to group A (p < 0.05). Assessment of the overall efficacy outcome revealed a statistically significant high percentage of cure (35.6% vs 1.4%) and high effectiveness (42.5% vs 13.6%) and a low percentage of effectiveness (21.9% vs 74.3%) and ineffectiveness (0.0% vs 5.7%) in Group B compared to Group A (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Combining sodium hyaluronate eye drops with tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops yielded obviously better efficacy outcomes compared to using tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops alone.

Design and Evaluation of a Dual-Sensitive In Situ Gel for the Controlled Release of Pranoprofen

Currently, the marketed ophthalmic preparations of pranoprofen (PF) are mainly eye drops, but due to the special clearance mechanism of the eye and corneal reflex, the contact time between the drug and the focal site is short, most of the drug is lost, and the bioavailability is less than 5%. In the present study, an in situ gel eye drop containing no bacteriostatic agent and sensitive to temperature and ions was designed for delivery of PF. It was demonstrated to meet the criteria for ophthalmic preparations by characterization such as appearance content sterility. Ocular irritation tests showed a favorable safety profile. In vivo ocular retention time experiments showed that the ocular retention time of the pranoprofen gel was 4.41 times longer than that of commercially available drops (Pranopulin®), and the nasal tear excretion of the pranoprofen gel was lower than that of Pranopulin®, which suggests that the drug loss was reduced relative to that of the drops. The efficacy of the pranoprofen gel against tincture of cayenne pepper-induced corneal and conjunctival inflammation was examined using Pranopulin® as a control and in conjunction with inflammation scores, H&E slice results, and levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. The results showed that pranoprofen gel and Pranololin® had significant efficacy in the treatment of corneal and conjunctival inflammation, and the anti-inflammatory effect of pranoprofen gel was superior to that of Pranololin®. This study provides a new option for the treatment of corneal and conjunctival inflammation.
