Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article aims to demonstrate the clinical application of a comprehensive workflow that integrates digital tools for accurate color matching, and its immediate implementation in the restoration of anterior teeth. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS Two patients demonstrating dissatisfaction regarding a maxillary central incisor had an old restoration replaced resorting to a digital workflow to enhance the predictability of the new direct restoration. OptiShade allowed the precise assessment of tooth color and the CompoShade application provided precise color and material selection, as well as the determination of a layering strategy. Precision and accuracy of the colorimeter and the composite layering application were demonstrated clinically in vivo. CONCLUSIONS Implementing a digital workflow with the integration of OptiShade measurements and the CompoShade layering recipe calculation, as well as the respective realistic try-in, enables the achievement of precise color matching for anterior composite restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The employment of a digital colorimeter and layering recipes simplify shade matching, and optimizes composite resin clinical use and success. The implementation of a realistic try-in, previous to the definitive restoration, allows the clinician to perform any adjustments if needed.

Abstract
AIM To determine the prevalence of red-green (RG) color vision deficiency (CVD) in an elderly population and its related factors. METHODS This report is a part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye Study: a cross-sectional population-based study that was conducted on the elderly population (≥60y) of Tehran, Iran using multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling. All study participants underwent complete ocular examination, including the measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, objective and subjective refraction, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy. The color vision was tested using Ishihara plates with the near optical correction in place. RESULTS Of the 3791 invitees, 3310 participated in the study. The data of 2164 individuals were analyzed after applying the exclusion criteria. The prevalence of R-G CVD was 3.73% (95%CI: 2.37%-5.09%) in the whole sample; the prevalence of protanomaly, protanopia, and deuteranopia was 1.51%, 1.76%, and 0.45%, respectively. The prevalence of R-G CVD was significantly higher in males than in females. The prevalence of RG CVD increased with advancing age from 2.91% in the age group 60-64y to 5.8% in the age group ≥80y (P=0.070). According to the multiple logistic regression model, male sex, and glaucoma were significantly related to RG CVD. Older age and hypertension also had a marginally significant relationship with RG CVD. CONCLUSION Changes in color vision occur in the elderly due to the aging process and some physiological and pathological factors. Since the change in visual perception may affect the person's performance, this aspect of the visual system's function should also be taken into consideration in the examinations of the elderly.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication and the leading cause of blindness in patients with type 2 diabetes. DR has been shown to be closely correlated with blood glucose levels and the duration of diabetes. However, the onset and progression of DR also display clinical heterogeneity. We applied whole-exome sequencing and RNA-seq approaches to study the gene mutation and transcription profiles in three groups of diabetic patients with extreme clinical phenotypes in DR onset, timing, and disease progression, aiming to identify genetic variants that may play roles in the pathogenesis of DR. We identified 23 putatively pathogenic genes, and ingenuity pathway analysis of these mutated genes reveals their functional association with glucose metabolism, diabetic complications, neural system activity, and dysregulated immune responses. In addition, ten potentially protective genes were also proposed. These findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of DR and may provide potential targets for developing new strategies to combat DR.

Abstract
In diabetes mellitus (DM) patients retinal complications were typically considered part of a vascular process. Recent research suggests that retinal degeneration in DM might also be caused by a neuropathy that could precede microvascular alterations. The present work reviews the currently available bibliography about neurodegeneration in patients with type 2 DM (DM2) without diabetic retinopathy (DR). In patients with non-severe, early DM2 without DR and good metabolic control visual function parameters show early abnormalities that precede clinical DR (in which we diagnose with a conventional ophthalmological examination). Using optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology, a reduction in macular and peripapillary thickness has been observed in different studies. Recent researches suggest that systemic complications (especially ischaemia) and a possible microvascular alteration eventually contributes to retinal neurodegeneration, which opens the door to new studies that include new techniques for evaluating the microvascularization of the retinal layers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite developments of dental shade selection methods, shade selection is still a challenge affecting esthetic outcomes. The purpose of this review was to discuss visual and digital shade taking methods, related effective factors and conditions, and their accuracy and precision to find out the most accurate, precise shade selection method available in dentistry. OVERVIEW The key terms of accuracy, background, ceramic, color, colorimeter, color analysis, color science, color measurement, color measuring instrument, color matching, composite resin, dental/tooth shade guide, digital camera, esthetics, imaging, imaging application/program/ software, intraoral scanner, light source, photography, precision, shade, shade matching/ determination/prediction/reproduction/selection, shade taking device, spectrophotometer, spectrophotometry, tooth color measurement, tooth color/shade, and visual perception were used separately and jointly to detect related English-language articles published between January 1, 1985, and January 1, 2021. Electronic/non-electronic searches of Google Scholar/PubMed/Scopus/Web of Science were accomplished. Consequently, 249 articles were considered. Accordingly, the digital methods show higher accuracy and precision compared to the visual methods while requiring to be enhanced regarding accuracy to achieve ideal shade taking results. CONCLUSIONS Dental spectrophotometers provide the highest overall accuracy and precision among different shade selection methods while needing clinical setting to control related effective factors/conditions and technological improvement to perform optimally. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Different factors can affect the accuracy and precision of tooth shade selection methods and devices. The understanding of these effective factors may lead to a standard shade taking protocol using accurate, precise methods and devices.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate acquired color vision deficiency (CVD) using the Rabin cone contrast test (RCCT) in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 39 patients with macular edema due to RVO who were treated with intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents and demonstrated improvement of best-corrected visual acuity to 20/20 Snellen VA or better. The acquired CVD was evaluated by the RCCT and standard pseudo-isochromatic plates-part 2 (SPP-2). RESULTS Mean L, M, and S color contrast test (CCT) scores were significantly lower in RVO eyes than in the fellow eyes (L CCTs, 70.0 ± 13.3 vs. 90.0 ± 8.0, respectively, P < 0.01; M CCTs, 85.0 ± 16.6 vs. 95.0 ± 5.7, respectively, P < 0.01; S CCTs, 80.0 ± 21.5 vs. 95.0 ± 7.1, respectively, P < 0.01). Acquired CVD was diagnosed in 25 eyes of 39 patients by the RCCT and in 15 eyes of 39 patients by SPP-2. The RCCT was performed on two different days in 21 patients. It revealed acquired CVD in 17 eyes on the first day and in 10 eyes on the second day. Acquired CVD was improved in 9 eyes, unchanged in 8 eyes, and worsened in 2 eyes. CONCLUSIONS The RCCT revealed eyes with RVO had acquired CVD. Acquired CVD caused by RVO can be improved further in some cases even after recovery of vision to 20/20. The RCCT may be able to quantitatively diagnose acquired CVD status.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by impaired glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Among its serious multisystemic complications is diabetic retinopathy (DR), which develops slowly and often insidiously. This disorder-the most common cause of vision loss in working-age adults-is characterized by functional and morphological changes in the retina. It results from the exacerbation of ischemic and inflammatory conditions prompted by alterations in the blood vessels, such as the development of leukostasis, thickening of the basement membrane, retinal neovascularization and fibrovascular tissue formation at the vitreoretinal interface. The pathogenic alterations are usually triggered at the biochemical level, involving a greater activity in 4 pathways: the polyol pathway, the hexosamine pathway, the formation of advanced glycation end-products and the activation of protein kinase C isoforms. When acting together, these pathways give rise to increased levels of reactive oxygen species and decreased levels of endogenous antioxidant agents, thus generating oxidative stress. All current therapies are aimed at the later stages of DR, and their application implies side effects. One possible strategy for preventing the complications of DM is to counteract the elevated superoxide production stemming from a high level of blood glucose. Accordingly, some treatments are under study for their capacity to reduce vascular leakage and avoid retinal ischemia, retinal neovascularization and macular edema. The present review summarizes the biochemical aspects of DR and the main approaches for treating it.

Abstract
Background: Ocular involvement in Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) patients is mainly associated with uveitis but there remains a paucity of data on dry eye and retinal abnormalities. We aimed to analyze dry eye and subclinical retinal abnormalities in a cohort of PsA patients sine-psoriasis (PsO). Methods: PsA patients sine-PsO were enrolled. Best-corrected-visual-acuity, ocular-surface-disease-index (OSDI), Schirmer test, tear film breakup-time, standard-automated-perimetry (SAP, mean deviation—MD, pattern standard deviation—PSD), fundus-perimetry (FP), and spectral-domain-optical-coherence-tomography (SD-OCT) were performed. Results: A total of 80 eyes from 40 PsA patients with moderate-severe disease activity, and 70 eyes from 35 healthy control (HC) were evaluated. Higher dry eye prevalence occurred in PsA than HC (p < 0.0001). ESR was positively related with OSDI (p < 0.001) and negatively related with Schirmer (p = 0.007). In PsA, SAP registered higher MD (p < 0.0001) and higher PSD (p = 0.005) in comparison with HC. PSD resulted positively correlated with ESR (p = 0.04) and CRP (p = 0.01), while MD showed a negative correlation with CRP (p = 0.01). Both FP mean differential sensitivity and mean defect were lower in PsA then HC (p < 0.0001). In PsA, FP differential sensitivity was directly related with cumulative steroids (p = 0.02). Conclusions: In PsA patients sine-PsO, dry eye and subclinical abnormalities in visual functions occurred being potentially related to systemic inflammation.

Abstract
AIM To examine the correlation of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with intercapillary area (ICA) measured from optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in patients with diabetes, and to compare the strength of associations between BCVA with ICA and other OCT-A metrics. METHODS A cross-sectional study involved 447 eyes from 299 patients with diabetes. All participants underwent OCT-A with a swept-source OCT (Triton DRI-OCT, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). An automated customised MATLAB programme was used to quantify ICA (the mean of the 10 largest areas including foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area (ICA10_FAZ) and excluding FAZ area (ICA10_excFAZ)) and other OCT-A metrics (FAZ area, FAZ circularity and vessel density) from the macular OCT-A images. BCVA was measured using Snellen chart for the patients and then converted to logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) VA. We further defined 'good VA' as Snellen >0.7 and 'poor VA' as Snellen ≤0.7 as a binary VA outcome for logistic regression analysis. RESULTS In univariate regression analysis, increased ICA10_FAZ and ICA10_excFAZ were significantly correlated with logMAR (p values <0.05). In multivariate regression analysis, only the association between ICA10_FAZ and logMAR persisted (β=0.103, p=0.024). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, increased ICA10_FAZ (OR=1.300, 95% CI 1.076 to 1.679, p=0.044) and FAZ circularity (OR=1.285, 95% CI 1.031 to 1.603, p=0.026) showed significant associations with poor VA. CONCLUSIONS Increased ICA measured from OCT-A, describing enlargement of capillary rarefaction or closure at macular area, is independently associated with BCVA, suggesting that ICA is a potential marker to quantify retinal microvascular abnormalities relating to vision among individuals with diabetes.

Abstract
Introduction The paper presents a commentary on the method of analysis of corneal vibrations occurring during eye pressure measurements with air-puff tonometers, for example, Corvis. The presented definition and measurement method allow for the analysis of image sequences of eye responses—cornea deformation. In particular, the outer corneal contour and sclera fragments are analysed, and 3D reconstruction is performed. Methods On this basis, well-known parameters such as eyeball reaction or corneal response are determined. The next steps of analysis allow for automatic and reproducible separation of four different corneal vibrations. These vibrations are associated with (1) the location of the maximum of cornea deformation; (2) the cutoff area measured in relation to the cornea in a steady state; (3) the maximum of peaks occurring between applanations; and (4) the other characteristic points of the corneal contour. Results The results obtained enable (1) automatic determination of the amplitude of vibrations; (2) determination of the frequency of vibrations; and (3) determination of the correlation between the selected types of vibrations. Conclusions These are diagnostic features that can be directly applied clinically for new and archived data.
