Effect of Biomineralization Ability on Push-out Strength of Proroot Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Mineral Trioxide Aggregate Branco, and Calcium Phosphate Cement on Dentin: An In vitro Evaluation

Effect of ultrasonic agitation on marginal adaptation, intratubular penetration and bonding strength of calcium-silicate-based endodontic sealers: A laboratory study

The effect of ultrasonic activation (UA) on marginal adaptation, intratubular penetration and bond strength provided by three calcium silicate-based sealers was evaluated. Ninety-six distobuccal root canals of maxillary molars were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 12) according to the sealer and UA application: EndoSequence BC sealer (ESBC), Sealer Plus BC (SPBC) and Bio-C Sealer (BCS), using AH Plus (AH) as a control group. The specimens were sectioned at 2, 4 and 6 mm from the apex. The data were statistically analysed using Kruskall-Wallis, Dunn, Mann-Whitney and chi-squared tests. UA improved the marginal adaptation of ESBC (6 mm), SPBC (all levels), BCS (2/4 mm) and AH (4 mm) (p < 0.05); the bond strength of SBPC (2 mm) and BCS (6 mm) were also improved (p < 0.05). The UA of endodontic silicate-based sealers improved the marginal adaptation in all levels and the bond strength of SBPC and BCS sealer.

Effect of three intracanal medicaments used in pulp regeneration on the push-out bond strength of mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium-enriched mixture: An in vitro study

Background. The bond strength of the materials used as a cervical barrier in the pulp regeneration is essential for the success of treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of triple antibiotic paste (TAP), double antibiotic paste (DAP), and simvastatin as intracanal medicaments on the dislodgement resistance of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM). Methods. A total of 160 extracted human single-rooted teeth were selected, and root canal preparation was carried out. The teeth in each group were randomly divided into four subgroups: TAP, DAP, simvastatin, and the control group (without intracanal medicament). Four weeks after placing the medicaments, it was removed by sodium hypochlorite, and MTA and CEM were placed in the coronal third of the root canals. After a week, 2-mm-thick dentin disks were prepared from the coronal third of the roots, and the push-out test was performed using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and independent t-test at a significance level of 0.05. Results. Regardless of the intracanal medicament, there was no significant difference between the overall bond strength of MTA (59.3±10 MPa) and CEM (55.8±11 MPa) (P=0.6). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in bond strength between the two intracanal medicament groups and the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion. Under the limitations of the current study, DAP, simvastatin, and TAP, as intracanal medicaments, did not adversely affect the push-out bond strength of CEM and MTA.

Bioactive tri/dicalcium silicate cements for treatment of pulpal and periapical tissues

Over 2500 articles and 200 reviews have been published on the bioactive tri/dicalcium silicate dental materials. The indications have expanded since their introduction in the 1990s from endodontic restorative and pulpal treatments to endodontic sealing and obturation. Bioactive ceramics, based on tri/dicalcium silicate cements, are now an indispensable part of the contemporary dental armamentarium for specialists including endodontists, pediatric dentists, oral surgeons andfor general dentists. This review emphasizes research on how these materials have conformed to international standards for dental materials ranging from biocompatibility (ISO 7405) to conformance as root canal sealers (ISO 6876). Potential future developments of alternative hydraulic materials were included. This review provides accurate materials science information on these important materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The broadening indications and the proliferation of tri/dicalcium silicate-based products make this relatively new dental material important for all dentists and biomaterials scientists. Presenting the variations in compositions, properties, indications and clinical performance enable clinicians to choose the material most suitable for their cases. Researchers may expand their bioactive investigations to further validate and improve materials and outcomes.

Design Variability of the Push-out Bond Test in Endodontic Research: A Systematic Review

INTRODUCTION

There is limited literature on the impact of testing variables on the push-out bond test (POBT). This review identified designs of the POBT used in the endodontic literature and aimed to determine which experimental variables may influence the push-out bond strength (POBS).

METHODS

A systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines was performed by searching the PubMed, SCOPUS, and Cochrane library databases using terms including push-out and dislocation resistance and descriptions of endodontic materials. Test variables assessed included method of root preparation, timing of sectioning compared with filling, thickness, diameter and taper of sections, and plunger size and velocity. The POBS of 3 common materials (gutta-percha and AH Plus, mineral trioxide aggregate, and Biodentine) were collected from investigations, and a comparison was attempted.

RESULTS

One hundred thirty-three studies assessed the POBS of root-filling materials, 68 assessed root repair cements/root-end filling materials, and 16 assessed orifice barrier materials other than mineral trioxide aggregate. There was significant variation in all of the assessed variables, resulting in a large range of reported values for the POBS of the various materials. Because of this heterogeneity in study design, no further statistical analysis of the impact of the test variables on POBS was possible.

CONCLUSIONS

There was considerable variation in the POBT design used in endodontic research. Greater standardization is required for future research as well as accurate reporting for all test variables to assess the impact of specific design variables on POBS.
