Abstract
Purpose Primary dental care facilities and awareness about temporomandibular disorders are lacking among the indigenous population of Kerala. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) disorders among the indigenous populations of Kerala. Methodology This cross-sectional study included adults aged 18 years and above, visiting primary health care centre in the tribal hamlet in the town of Kalpetta, Wayanad District, Kerala, India, for reasons other than dental. Axis I and II of Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) was used to screen for TMD. A local language validated screening questionnaire was used. The clinical examination was carried out as per the DC/TMD by a calibrated examiner. The data was processed using SPSS and the frequencies and proportions for signs and symptoms of TMD were estimated. Results Among 198 adults screened, 23 (11.6 %) had TMD. Among these 60 % of the adults were aged 31-65 years and predominantly females (86.9 %). 39 % of these patients were dentulous. All affected adults experienced TMD related pain for more than 3 months with 90 % of them experiencing moderate-to-severe pain. Myofascial pain was the most prevalent type. Other findings included moderate anxiety levels in 34.8 % and abnormal oral behaviour and high physical symptoms in 40 % TMD patients. Conclusion TMD disorders were prevalent among the indigenous population and remained undiagnosed. The study highlights the need for screening and the availability of basic dental care for the indigenous populations.

Abstract
Background Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) represent a prevalent group of conditions impacting the temporomandibular joint. Among the therapeutic interventions, occlusal splint therapy has gained recognition for its potential to address TMD symptoms, particularly in cases involving joint displacement. Objective This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of occlusal splint therapy in cases of moderate TMD with joint displacement, focusing on changes in condylar position, joint morphology, and patient-reported outcomes. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted involving 148 participants who underwent occlusal splint therapy between January 2018 and December 2020. Data were collected through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging for precise assessments of condylar position and joint morphology. Ethical approval was obtained, and participants provided informed consent. Baseline characteristics, medical history, and TMD severity were recorded. Occlusal splint therapy included individualized fabrication, occlusal analysis, adjustments for optimal fit, and prescribed wear schedules. Follow-up included CBCT scans at specified intervals (three months and six months), with participant-reported outcomes collected. The data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0 (Released 2013; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Paired t-tests or nonparametric equivalents were employed to assess changes in condylar position and joint morphology. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential factors influencing treatment outcomes. The significance level was set at p < 0.05 for all statistical tests. Results The entire cohort (n = 148) had a mean age of 32.5 years (± 8.1), with a balanced gender distribution. Changes in condylar position revealed a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.03), with a mean decrease of 0.2 mm posttreatment. Joint morphology changes indicated increased joint space width (p = 0.01), improved disc position (p = 0.02), and nonsignificant alterations in bony structures (p = 0.10). Patient-reported outcomes demonstrated significant improvements in pain levels, jaw functionality, and satisfaction (all p < 0.001). Age and gender subgroup analyses showed consistent improvements in condylar position, joint morphology, and patient-reported outcomes across different groups. Conclusion Occlusal splint therapy demonstrated effectiveness in improving condylar position, joint morphology, and patient-reported outcomes in cases of moderate TMD with joint displacement. The findings underscore the potential of occlusal splint therapy as a viable intervention for managing TMD, providing valuable insights for clinicians and researchers.

Abstract
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are characterized by their multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis. A 3-year prospective study was conducted in a Portuguese TMDs department to study the prevalence of different TMDs signs and symptoms and their association with risk factors and comorbidities. Five hundred ninety-five patients were included using an online database: EUROTMJ. Most patients were female (80.50%), with a mean age of 38.20 ± 15.73 years. The main complaints were: (1) temporomandibular joint (TMJ) clicking (13.26%); (2) TMJ pain (12.49%); (3) masticatory muscle tension (12.15%). The main clinical findings were myalgia (74%), TMJ clicking (60-62%), and TMJ arthralgia (31-36%). Risk factors such as clenching (60%) and bruxism (30%) were positively associated with TMJ pain and myalgia. Orthodontic treatment (20%) and wisdom tooth removal (19%) were positively associated with TMJ clicking, while jaw trauma (6%), tracheal intubation (4%) and orthognathic surgery (1%) were positively associated with TMJ crepitus, limited mandibular range of motion, and TMJ pain, respectively. In total, 42.88% of TMDs patients had other associated chronic diseases, most of them were mental behavioral or neurodevelopmental disorders (33.76%), namely, anxiety (20%) and depression (13%). The authors also observed a positive association of mental disorders with the degree of TMJ pain and myalgia. The online database seems to be a relevant scientific instrument for healthcare providers who treat TMDs. The authors expect that the EUROTMJ database can serve as a milestone for other TMDs departments.

Abstract
The prevalence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is significantly high around the world. We conducted a literature review to determine the prevalence of TMD globally and in Saudi Arabia based on published studies. This review article collected 35 full-text articles after searching PubMed for TMD prevalence between 2015-2021. Assessing the prevalence of TMDs is important for several reasons, including providing an overview of the incidence of such disorders, educating the community, clarifying the gender and age group with the highest prevalence, establishing a program to prepare specialists to treat these disorders, and identifying the appropriate number of specialists by comparing TMD prevalence to Saudi Arabia's census. Out of 35 selected articles, thirty studies were done outside Saudi Arabia, and five were local. Less than 40% prevalence of TMD has been reported with associated factors such as gender, psychological status, and age. The female gender has shown a higher TMD rate than the male gender. Some authors have suggested conducting a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) assessment in the pediatric clinic. Moreover, TMD screening is an important tool for every patient visiting the dental clinic to assess TMJ status and treat TMD at early stages, especially in non-painful cases.

Abstract
Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterized by extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and chondrocyte apoptosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of PRMT1 in TMJOA pathogenesis and its underlying molecular mechanism. Compared to the control group, PRMT1 was highly expressed in IL-1β-treated chondrocytes and articular cartilage following MIA injection into rat TMJs. Furthermore, knocking down PRMT1 considerably inhibited ECM degradation and apoptosis induced by IL-1β. Mechanistic analyses further revealed that PRMT1 knockdown activated the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and prevented FOXO1 from translocating to the nucleus. Moreover, an inhibitor of AKT (LY294002) rescued the effect of PRMT1 knockdown on IL-1β-induced ECM degradation and apoptosis, and AMI-1, a selective inhibitor of PRMT1, inhibited PRMT1 expression and reversed the pathological progress of TMJOA. Thus, our findings suggest that PRMT1 plays an essential role in ECM degradation and chondrocyte apoptosis in TMJOA via the AKT/FOXO1 signaling pathway.
