Abstract
OBJECTIVES Suspension laryngoscopy can trigger vagal reflexes, leading to a decrease in heart rate, a phenomenon that is more common in patients with a high body mass index (BMI). This study aims to systematically evaluate the effect of BMI on heart rate during suspension laryngoscopy (SL-HR) in patients with laryngeal lesions. METHODS We employed univariate generalized linear regression and stratified analyses to assess the relationship between BMI and changes in SLHR, adjusting for confounders such as age, gender, intubation type, and depth. A generalized additive model with spline smoothing was utilized to evaluate the BMI-HR relationship, with piecewise linear regression to identify specific cutoff points. RESULTS We conducted a prospective study of 205 patients who underwent general anesthesia for suspension laryngoscopy. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that, after adjusting for covariates, each one-unit increase in BMI was associated with a decrease of 1.04 beats per minute in SL-HR (β = -1.04 [95% CI, -1.85 to -0.23]). Curve fitting revealed a gradual decline in SL-HR with increasing BMI, plateauing at around 60 beats per minute. The decrease in SL-HR became more pronounced as BMI approached 30 kg/m², with further analysis revealing an inflection point at a BMI of 28.8 kg/m², where each additional unit of BMI correlated with a 6.5 beats per minute decrease in heart rate (β = -6.5 [95% CI, -10.1 to -2.8], P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Patients with high BMI are more prone to vagal reflexes during suspension laryngoscopy, resulting in significant reductions in heart rate, especially when BMI exceeds 28.8 kg/m². Therefore, close monitoring of heart rate changes is crucial in this patient demographic, along with considering prophylactic anticholinergic agents to mitigate vagal reflex effects.

Abstract
Hyperthermia induces slight temperature increase of 4-8 °C inside the tumor, making it more responsive to radiation and drugs, thereby improving the outcome of the oncological treatment. To verify the level of heat in the tumor and to avoid damage of the healthy tissue, methods for non-invasive temperature monitoring are needed. Temperature estimation by means of microwave imaging is of great interest among the scientific community. In this paper, we present the results of experiments based on ultra-wideband (UWB) M-sequence technology. Our temperature estimation approach uses temperature dependency of tissue dielectric properties and relation of UWB images to the reflection coefficient on the boundary between tissue types. The realistic measurement setup for neck cancer hyperthermia considers three antenna arrangements. Data are processed with Delay and Sum beamforming and Truncated Singular Value Decomposition. Two types of experiments are presented in this paper. In the first experiment, relative permittivity of subsequently replaced tumor mimicking material is estimated, and in the second experiment, real temperature change in the tumor imitate is monitored. The results showed that the presented approach allows for qualitative as well as quantitative permittivity and temperature estimation. The frequency range for temperature estimation, preferable antenna configurations, and limitations of the method are indicated.

Abstract
Background This systematic review summarizes available evidence on the relationship between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) volumetric quantification on brain MRI scans and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods The literature search was performed in March 2022 using MEDLINE PubMed Central, Scopus and Web of Science - Publons as search engines. Relevant articles investigating, with a quantitative volumetric approach, the link between WMH and CKD patients were selected. Results The database search strategy found 987 articles, after excluding duplicates, the titles and abstracts of the remaining 320 articles were examined. Subsequently 276 articles were excluded as they were not relevant to the topic. Of the 44 articles evaluated for eligibility, 36 were excluded because the quantitative analysis of WMH was not volumetric. Finally, 8 articles were included in this systematic review. Conclusions Literature on this topic is extremely heterogeneous in terms of methodology and samples. However, evidence shows that there is a relationship between CKD and WMH volume of the brain. We recommend that quantifiable biomarkers such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) should be included in studies dealing with cerebrovascular disease. The biological and molecular mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular damage in patients with chronic renal failure deserve to be further explored.

Abstract
The role of androgens in body composition is well known. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has shown beneficial effects in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer (PCa). Given that androgens are important for the homeostasis of different organs, the effects of ADT can affect body composition and therefore adipose tissue. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are non-invasive methods that allow for quantification of the different fat compartments. In this review we describe the effects of ADT on abdominal adipose tissue in PCa patients.

Abstract
The knowledge of temperature distribution inside the tissue to be treated is essential for patient safety, workflow and clinical outcomes of thermal therapies. Microwave imaging represents a promising approach for non-invasive tissue temperature monitoring during hyperthermia treatment. In the present paper, a methodology for quantitative non-invasive tissue temperature estimation based on ultra-wideband (UWB) radar imaging in the microwave frequency range is described. The capabilities of the proposed method are demonstrated by experiments with liquid phantoms and three-dimensional (3D) Delay-and-Sum beamforming algorithms. The results of our investigation show that the methodology can be applied for detection and estimation of the temperature induced dielectric properties change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sequencing of the renal cell carcinoma (RCC) genome has detected several mutations with prognostic meaning. The association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is well known. The relationship among abdominal adipose tissue distribution and ccRCC-VHL and KDM5C genetic mutations is, to the knowledge of the authors, not known. METHODS In this retrospective study, we enrolled 97 Caucasian male patients divided into three groups: the control group (n = 35), the ccRCC-VHL group (n = 52) composed of ccRCC patients with VHL mutations and ccRCC-KDM5C group (n = 10) composed of ccRCC patients with KDM5C mutation. Total adipose tissue (TAT) area, VAT area and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area were measured in the groups. VAT/SAT ratio was calculated for each subject. RESULTS Statistically significant differences between ccRCC-KDM5C group and ccRCC-VHL group were obtained for TAT area (p < 0.05), VAT area (p < 0.05) and VAT/SAT ratio (p < 0.05); between ccRCC-VHL group and control group for TAT area (p < 0.001) and VAT area (p < 0.01); and between ccRCC-KDM5C group and control group for TAT area (p < 0.0001), VAT area (p < 0.0001) and SAT area (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates for the first time an increased amount of TAT, especially VAT, in the ccRCC-VHL and ccRCC-KDM5C groups. The effect was greater for the ccRCC-KDM5C group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The excessive amount of adipose tissue, mainly visceral, determines adiposopathy. With respect to oncogenesis, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) releases secretes adipokines, proinflammatory citokines and growth factors, considered mediating molecules in the development of obesity-related tumors. In this study, we quantify VAT in male patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) subgrouped according to the presence or absence of peritumoral collateral vessels. METHODS in this retrospective study, we enrolled 141 male caucasian patients divided into 2 groups: the ccRCC group (n = 106) composed of patients with ccRCC and control group (n = 35). The ccRCC group was further divided into two subgroups: the ccRCCa subgroup which showed absence of collateral vessels (n = 48) and ccRCCp subgroup with collateral vessels (n = 58).Total adipose tissue (TAT) area, VAT area and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area were measured in the groups and subgroups. VAT/SAT ratio was calculated for each subject. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were obtained between ccRCC group and control group for TAT area (p < 0.005), VAT area (p < 0.005) and SAT area (p = 0.01). Between ccRCCa subgroup and control group for TAT area (p < 0.001), VAT area (p = 0.005) and SAT area (p = 0.001). Between ccRCCp subgroup and control group for TAT area (p = 0.01) and VAT area (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION This study confirms the increase of abdominal, especially visceral, adipose tissue in ccRCC patients and demonstrates a significant VAT accumulation in both categories of patients with and without peritumoral collateral vessels. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE Visceral adiposity is present in patients with ccRCC regardless the presence of peritumoral collateral vessels, with surprisingly stronger results in the ccRCCa subgroup.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that there is a link between obesity and oncogenesis in many sites, including the kidney. Adiposopathy is characterized by an excessive accumulation of adipose tissue, principally visceral, which can lead to adipocyte and adipose tissue-related disorder, promoting metabolic syndrome. Visceral adipocytes secrete growth factors, proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines, regarded as mediating factors associated with the oncogenesis of obesity-related tumors. In this study, we evaluate the relationship between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC) in male patients. METHODS In this retrospective study, two groups were included: nccRCC group and control group. Total adipose tissue (TAT) area, VAT area and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area were measured in both groups. VAT/SAT ratio was subsequently calculated. RESULTS Statistically significant differences between the two groups were found in TAT area (p = 0.05), VAT area (p < 0.01) and VAT/SAT ratio (p < 0.05), while no significant difference was found in SAT area. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates an increased visceral adipose tissue in male patients with nccRCC.
