Deploying Elemental Iodine in a Vapor Form to Disinfect Water and to Clear Biofilms

Traditionally, iodine has been delivered as a solution, tablet or resin to disinfect water. In this study we evaluated the “I₂ vapor infusion” (I₂VP) technology which passes an airstream through a matrix containing elemental iodine (I₂) to produce I₂ vapor as an innovative method of iodine delivery for water disinfection. Pressured air was provided either by a compressor or hand pump. Testing was performed with water inoculated with either Gram-negative (Escherichia, Salmonella) or Gram-positive (Enterococcus) bacteria or with pre-formed Acinetobacter or Staphylococcus biofilms. Bacterial colony forming units were used to assess efficacy of the device. In distilled water all bacteria and biofilms were eliminated after brief exposures (<90 s). Culturable bacteria were also eliminated from pond and municipal sewer water, but the technology was mostly ineffective against dairy lagoon water with high turbidity and organic particulate. Longer duration infusion and higher air volumes used to overcome interference from organic matter were also associated with higher concentrations of residual iodine. We conclude that I₂ vapor infusion has the potential to be useful for emergency water treatment and potentially for reducing microbiological contamination of some waste streams.

Subchronic Toxicity of the New Iodine Complex in Dogs and Rats

Background: Complexes of iodine (povidone-iodine and cadexomers) are among the most important antiseptics used in clinical and veterinary medicines. However, high local irritation activity and systemic toxicity limits their oral administration. The purpose of the study was to compare the effect of a new complex of iodine (PA, potentiator of anticancer antibiotics), in which iodine is coordinated by carbohydrates and polypeptides) on the organisms of rats and dogs treated orally with the drug for 30 days. Methods: Wistar rats and Beagle dogs served as experimental animal models. Effect of PA on the animal organism was examined through the measurements of hormones level changes, hematological and clinical chemistry parameters alterations, necropsy and histological examination. Results: The established maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of 2,000 mg/kg PA led to a decrease in the rate of body weight gain in male and female rats. Changes in hematological and certain biochemical parameters in rats at doses of 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg were observed. Histological study of the thyroid gland revealed changes in the shape and size of the follicles along with colloid resorption. Administration of a half of MTD (180 mg/kg) and lower doses did not result in any change in dogs (thyroid-stimulating hormone, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine). Conclusions: The results of our study show that the pathogenetic action of PA takes place along the path of induction of an inflammatory response with the development of thyrotoxicosis, rather than hypothyroidism. The mechanism of induction of an inflammatory response is also confirmed by histological studies of lesions of the thyroid gland and testes in rats (Figure S1). The no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of PA is estimated to be 180 mg/kg (or iodine 22.8 mg/kg) in dogs, which is equivalent to 100 mg/kg (or iodine 12.3 mg/kg) in humans.

Use of Iodine to Biofortify and Promote Growth and Stress Tolerance in Crops

Iodine is not considered essential for land plants; however, in some aquatic plants, iodine plays a critical role in antioxidant metabolism. In humans, iodine is essential for the metabolism of the thyroid and for the development of cognitive abilities, and it is associated with lower risks of developing certain types of cancer. Therefore, great efforts are made to ensure the proper intake of iodine to the population, for example, the iodization of table salt. In the same way, as an alternative, the use of different iodine fertilization techniques to biofortify crops is considered an adequate iodine supply method. Hence, biofortification with iodine is an active area of research, with highly relevant results. The agricultural application of iodine to enhance growth, environmental adaptation, and stress tolerance in plants has not been well explored, although it may lead to the increased use of this element in agricultural practice and thus contribute to the biofortification of crops. This review systematically presents the results published on the application of iodine in agriculture, considering different environmental conditions and farming systems in various species and varying concentrations of the element, its chemical forms, and its application method. Some studies report beneficial effects of iodine, including better growth, and changes in the tolerance to stress and antioxidant capacity, while other studies report that the applications of iodine cause no response or even have adverse effects. We suggested different assumptions that attempt to explain these conflicting results, considering the possible interaction of iodine with other trace elements, as well as the different physicochemical and biogeochemical conditions that give rise to the distinct availability and the volatilization of the element.
