Enabling Remote Elderly Care: Design and Implementation of a Smart Energy Data System with Activity Recognition

Seniors face many challenges as they age, such as dementia, cognitive and memory disorders, vision and hearing impairment, among others. Although most of them would like to stay in their own homes, as they feel comfortable and safe, in some cases, older people are taken to special institutions, such as nursing homes. In order to provide serious and quality care to elderly people at home, continuous remote monitoring is perceived as a solution to keep them connected to healthcare service providers. The new trend in medical health services, in general, is to move from 'hospital-centric' services to 'home-centric' services with the aim of reducing the costs of medical treatments and improving the recovery experience of patients, among other benefits for both patients and medical centers. Smart energy data captured from electrical home appliance sensors open a new opportunity for remote healthcare monitoring, linking the patient's health-state/health-condition with routine behaviors and activities over time. It is known that deviation from the normal routine can indicate abnormal conditions such as sleep disturbance, confusion, or memory problems. This work proposes the development and deployment of a smart energy data with activity recognition (SEDAR) system that uses machine learning (ML) techniques to identify appliance usage and behavior patterns oriented to older people living alone. The proposed system opens the door to a range of applications that go beyond healthcare, such as energy management strategies, load balancing techniques, and appliance-specific optimizations. This solution impacts on the massive adoption of telehealth in third-world economies where access to smart meters is still limited.

Control and Optimisation of Power Grids Using Smart Meter Data: A Review

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the applications of smart meters in the control and optimisation of power grids to support a smooth energy transition towards the renewable energy future. The smart grids become more complicated due to the presence of small-scale low inertia generators and the implementation of electric vehicles (EVs), which are mainly based on intermittent and variable renewable energy resources. Optimal and reliable operation of this environment using conventional model-based approaches is very difficult. Advancements in measurement and communication technologies have brought the opportunity of collecting temporal or real-time data from prosumers through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Smart metering brings the potential of applying data-driven algorithms for different power system operations and planning services, such as infrastructure sizing and upgrade and generation forecasting. It can also be used for demand-side management, especially in the presence of new technologies such as EVs, 5G/6G networks and cloud computing. These algorithms face privacy-preserving and cybersecurity challenges that need to be well addressed. This article surveys the state-of-the-art of each of these topics, reviewing applications, challenges and opportunities of using smart meters to address them. It also stipulates the challenges that smart grids present to smart meters and the benefits that smart meters can bring to smart grids. Furthermore, the paper is concluded with some expected future directions and potential research questions for smart meters, smart grids and their interplay.

GridAttackAnalyzer: A Cyber Attack Analysis Framework for Smart Grids

The smart grid is one of the core technologies that enable sustainable economic and social developments. In recent years, various cyber attacks have targeted smart grid systems, which have led to severe, harmful consequences. It would be challenging to build a real smart grid system for cybersecurity experimentation and validation purposes. Hence, analytical techniques, with simulations, can be considered as a practical solution to make smart grid cybersecurity experimentation possible. This paper first provides a literature review on the current state-of-the-art in smart grid attack analysis. We then apply graphical security modeling techniques to design and implement a Cyber Attack Analysis Framework for Smart Grids, named GridAttackAnalyzer. A case study with various attack scenarios involving Internet of Things (IoT) devices is conducted to validate the proposed framework and demonstrate its use. The functionality and user evaluations of GridAttackAnalyzer are also carried out, and the evaluation results show that users have a satisfying experience with the usability of GridAttackAnalyzer. Our modular and extensible framework can serve multiple purposes for research, cybersecurity training, and security evaluation in smart grids.

A Cyber-Physical Approach for Residential Energy Management: Current State and Future Directions

In this work, we an envision Home Energy Management System (HEMS) as a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) architecture including three stages: Data Acquisition, Communication Network, and Data Analytics. In this CPS, monitoring, forecasting, comfort, occupation, and other strategies are conceived to feed a control plane representing the decision-making process. We survey the main technologies and techniques implemented in the recent years for each of the stages, reviewing and identifying the cutting-edge challenges that the research community are currently facing. For the Acquisition part, we define a metering device according to the IEC TS 63297:2021 Standard. We analyze the communication infrastructure as part of beyond 2030 communication era (5G and 6G), and discuss the Analytics stage as the cyber part of the CPS-based HEMS. To conclude, we present a case study in which, using real data collected in an experimental environment, we validate proposed architecture of HEMS in monitoring tasks. Results revealed an accuracy of 99.2% in appliance recognition compared with the state-of-the-art proposals.

Criteria Selection Using Machine Learning (ML) for Communication Technology Solution of Electrical Distribution Substations

In the future, as populations grow and more end-user applications become available, the current traditional electrical distribution substation will not be able to fully accommodate new applications that may arise. Consequently, there will be numerous difficulties, including network congestion, latency, jitter, and, in the worst-case scenario, network failure, among other things. Thus, the purpose of this study is to assist decision makers in selecting the most appropriate communication technologies for an electrical distribution substation through an examination of the criteria’s in-fluence on the selection process. In this study, nine technical criteria were selected and processed using machine learning (ML) software, RapidMiner, to find the most optimal technical criteria. Several ML techniques were studied, and Naïve Bayes was chosen, as it showed the highest performance among the rest. From this study, the criteria were ranked in order of importance from most important to least important based on the average value obtained from the output. Seven technical criteria were identified as being important and should be evaluated in order to determine the most appropriate communication technology solution for electrical distribution substation as a result of this study.

Formal Modeling of IoT-Based Distribution Management System for Smart Grids

The smart grid is characterized as a power system that integrates real-time measurements, bi-directional communication, a two-way flow of electricity, and evolutionary computation. The power distribution system is a fundamental aspect of the electric power system in order to deliver safe, efficient, reliable, and resilient power to consumers. A distribution management system (DMS) begins with the extension of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system through a transmission network beyond the distribution network. These transmission networks oversee the distribution of energy generated at power plants to consumers via a complex system of transformers, substations, transmission lines, and distribution lines. The major challenges that existing distribution management systems are facing, maintaining constant power loads, user profiles, centralized communication, and the malfunctioning of system equipment and monitoring huge amounts of data of millions of micro-transactions, need to be addressed. Substation feeder protection abruptly shuts down power on the whole feeder in the event of a distribution network malfunction, causing service disruption to numerous end-user clients, including industrial, hospital, commercial, and residential users. Although there are already many traditional systems with the integration of smart things at present, there are few studies of those systems reporting runtime errors during their implementation and real-time use. This paper presents the systematic model of a distribution management system comprised of substations, distribution lines, and smart meters with the integration of Internet-of-Things (IoT), Nondeterministic Finite Automata (NFA), Unified Modeling Language (UML), and formal modeling approaches. Non-deterministic finite automata are used for automating the system procedures. UML is used to represent the actors involved in the distribution management system. Formal methods from the perspective of the Vienna Development Method-Specification Language (VDM-SL) are used for modeling the system. The model will be analyzed using the facilities available in the VDM-SL toolbox.

Renewable Energy Deployment and COVID-19 Measures for Sustainable Development

The main goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of restrictive measures introduced in connection with COVID-19 on consumption in renewable energy markets. The study will be based on the hypothesis that similar changes in human behavior can be expected in the future with the further spread of COVID-19 and/or the introduction of additional quarantine measures around the world. The analysis also yielded additional results. The strongest reductions in energy generation occurred in countries with a high percentage (more than 80%) of urban population (Brazil, USA, the United Kingdom and Germany). This study uses two models created with the Keras Long Short-Term Memory (Keras LSTM) Model, and 76 and 10 parameters are involved. This article suggests that various restrictive strategies reduced the sustainable demand for renewable energy and led to a drop in economic growth, slowing the growth of COVID-19 infections in 2020. It is unknown to what extent the observed slowdown in the spread from March 2020 to September 2020 due to the policy’s impact and not the interaction between the virus and the external environment. All renewable energy producers decreased the volume of renewable energy market supply in 2020 (except China).

Impact of the Lockdown during the COVID-19 Pandemic on Electricity Use by Residential Users

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown can be regarded as a forced social experiment, the results of which show how to use energy under specific conditions. During this period, there was a reduction in electricity consumption at the level of the power system, but a different specificity distinguishes the group of household users. The article aims at presenting and analysing the identified issues concerning residential electricity users based on the experience from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Data from energy meters from almost 7000 flats in Warsaw’s housing estates during the lockdown in 2020 and the analogous period before the pandemic were used. The analysis showed that, on average, residential users staying practically the whole day in their flats increased their energy consumption, but without increasing their average daily peak power, smoothing the profile in the morning hours to the level reaching the peak power that had occurred in the analogous period before the lockdown. The peak power of the sections feeding the different numbers of dwellings also remained practically unchanged during the lockdown compared to the pre-pandemic period. The pressure to work and educate remotely should contribute to an increase in the digital competence of society, which may result in an increased interest in new forms of activity and cooperation based on demand-side response and prosumption mechanisms, with digital settlements for energy exchange and services.

A Survey on Enhanced Smart Micro-Grid Management System with Modern Wireless Technology Contribution

Micro-grid (MG) deployment has dramatically become more popular with the high penetration of renewable energy resources (RER). This trend brings with it the merits of independent power grid clean energy resource-based systems, and simultaneously the demerits of an unstable grid due to the intermittent nature of RER. Control and monitoring of MG through robust and ubiquitous communication system infrastructure is the solution to overcoming this intermittency. There has been an increasing focus in recent years on using wireless communication technologies as a prominent candidate in holistic proposal for the micro-grid management system (MGMS). The MGMS has been developed using the multi-agent system (MAS), multi-micro-grid (multi-MG), Internet of things (IoT) integration, and cloud concepts requiring new communication specifications, which can be satisfied by next-generation wireless technologies. There is, however, a lack of comprehensive corresponding investigation into management levels of MG interaction requirements and applied communication technologies, as well as a roadmap for wireless communication deployment, especially for the next generation. In this paper, we investigate communication technology applications in the MG and focus on their classification in a way that determines standard gaps when applying wireless for MG control levels. We also explore and categorize the literature that has applied wireless technologies to MG. Moreover, since MGMS has been revolutionized by attaching new technologies and applications to make it an active element of the power system, we address future trends for MGMS and offer a roadmap for applying new enhancements in wireless technologies, especially the fifth generation (5G) of wireless networks with its exclusive characteristics, to implement this novel approach.
