Occurrences and implications of pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in different stages of drinking water treatment plants and distribution systems

Different stages of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) play specific roles in diverse contaminants' removal present in natural water sources. Although the stages are recorded to promote adequate treatment of water, the occurrence of pathogenic bacteria (PB) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the treated water and the changes in their diversity and abundance as it passed down to the end users through the drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), is a great concern, especially to human health. This could imply that the different stages and the distribution system provide a good microenvironment for their growth. Hence, it becomes pertinent to constantly monitor and document the diversity of PB and ARB present at each stage of the treatment and distribution system. This review aimed at documenting the occurrence of PB and ARB at different stages of treatment and distribution systems as well as the implication of their occurrence globally. An exhaustive literature search from Web of Science, Science-Direct database, Google Scholar, Academic Research Databases like the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Scopus, and SpringerLink was done. The obtained information showed that the different treatment stages and distribution systems influence the PB and ARB that proliferate. To minimize the human health risks associated with the occurrence of these PB, the present review, suggests the development of advanced technologies that can promote quick monitoring of PB/ARB at each treatment stage and distribution system as well as reduction of the cost of environomics analysis to promote better microbial analysis.

Interaction Effect of Operating Parameters during Oxidation of Different Dyes via the Fenton Process. Application of the Plackett-Burmann Design

The interaction effect of eight operating factors on the degradation of three organic dyes of different structures (Cibacron green, methylene blue and methyl orange) has been studied. Effect had been evaluated statistically using the Plackett-Burman screening design which ex-tracted valuable information on the most important parameters and their interactions. The goodness of the model fit was checked by the determination of the coefficient R2. The process factors, which affected the degradation efficiency of dyes, were then analyzed and illustrated; the most important valueі (p and F) for three dyes proved the validity of the model. The results of interactions between the factors allow to understand and study the impact of each parameter on the elimination of dyes and to distinguish the key factor to upgrade the efficiency of the Fenton process.

Analysis of the Capacity of the Fenton Process for the Treatment of Polluted Wastewater from the Leather Dyeing Industry

In this work, the capacity of the Fenton oxidation process for the degradation of color and organic matter contained in the wastewater generated in the leather dyeing stage (WWDS) of an industrial tannery was evaluated. The wastewater characteristics included, among others, high toxicity (lethal concentration for Artemia salina, 24 h test, 50% of population = 93.71 ppm), high dye concentration (36 mg/L, yellow color), high chromium concentration (3.34 mg/L), and low biodegradability index (BOD₅/COD ratio = 0.083). From an experimental design, the response surface methodology, and the multiobjective optimization analysis, the following optimal operating conditions were established: initial pH = 3.15, [Fe²⁺] = 0.981 mM, and [H₂O₂] = 5.38 mM. After 10 min of oxidation (determined from kinetic studies), it reached approximately 97% decolorization, COD reduction of approximately 82%, and TOC mineralization of approximately 92%. A synergistic effect of Fenton's reagents for TOC removal (S _TOC = 0.8) and decolorization (S _CN = 0.28) of the WWDS under study was confirmed experimentally. An increase in the biodegradability index, to a value of approximately 0.3, was confirmed. The cost of the treatment was estimated at 0.0112 USD/m³. Thus, the Fenton oxidation process allowed compliance with current Colombian environmental regulations and considerably improved the biodegradability and toxicity characteristics of the studied industrial effluent. It can be considered as an efficient alternative, easy to carry out on an industrial batch scale, and economically viable for the treatment of wastewater from the leather dyeing stage of an industrial tannery.

Impact of the Oxidant Type on the Efficiency of the Oxidation and Removal of Iron Compounds from Groundwater Containing Humic Substances

Due to the coexistence of organic matter and iron in groundwater, a certain part of the iron is present as iron-organic complexes in the form of colloids and/or dissolved complexes. The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the type of oxidizing agent: O₂, Cl₂, H₂O₂, or KMnO₄, on the efficiency of the oxidation and removal of iron compounds from three groundwaters with significantly different contents and types of organic substances among which humic and fulvic acids occurred. This study shows that after the aeration and the oxidation with Cl₂ and H₂O₂, the increasing content of dissolved hydrophilic organic substances containing aromatic rings in the raw water reduced the effectiveness of Fe(II) oxidation and the effectiveness of iron removal during the sedimentation process. This regularity was not found only when KMnO₄ was used as the oxidant. After oxidation with H₂O₂, the highest number of organo-iron complexes and an increased concentration of dissolved organic carbon were found. High concentrations of organo-ferrous connections were also found in aerated water samples. The highest KMnO₄ efficiency of removing iron and organic substances and reducing the color intensity and turbidity was due to the catalytic and adsorptive properties of the precipitated MnO₂, which also improved the sedimentation properties of the resultant oxidation products.
