Enteric duplication cyst as a leading point for ileoileal intussusception in an adult: A rare cause of complete small intestinal obstruction

Intestinal intussusception caused by intestinal duplication and ectopic pancreas: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND

Intestinal intussusception caused by intestinal duplication and ectopic pancreas is extremely rare in the clinic and has not been reported previously.

CASE SUMMARY

A 29-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for chronic abdominal pain and bloating. The preoperative diagnosis was intestinal obstruction and intussusception. Then, laparotomy, partial small intestinal resection and extraintestinal decompression were performed. Postoperative pathology confirmed intestinal duplication and ectopic pancreas. After surgery, the patient recovered well with no complications. No recurrence was observed after more than 5 mo of follow-up.

CONCLUSION

We report a new case of a young male with intussusception caused by intestinal duplication and ectopic pancreas. Surgery is the main treatment for these conditions. This study aimed to raise awareness and provide information to improve the clinical management of this rare yet serious condition.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was thought to have respiratory symptoms as the main manifestation, but it has become clear that extrapulmonary symptoms such as gastrointestinal disorders also occur. There are several reports of intussusception associated with COVID-19 in children, but these are rare in adults. In this report, we present a case of cystic intestinal duplication that enlarged during the course of COVID-19 treatment and resulted in intussusception. Right hemicolectomy was performed for intussusception due to the cystic lesion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first resected case of intussusception due to alimentary tract duplication after COVID-19 infection.

Caecal duplication cyst leading to intussusception in an adult

Colonic duplication cyst is an uncommon cause of intussusception in adults. We report a case of caecal duplication cyst in a 24-year-old adult with a 3-year history of recurrent abdominal pain mainly in the periumbilical region. CT and MRI of the abdomen showed a lesion suggesting an caecal duplication cyst within an intussuception. The patient underwent diagnostic laparoscopy and was found to have a caecal duplication cyst acting as a lead point for the intusseception for which laparoscopic-assisted resection was performed. The histological examination confirmed the presence of intestinal duplication cyst without any underlying malignancy.
