Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) models in predicting the occurrence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and treatment need. METHODS Four ML models were created using 49 parameters known within the first 24 h post-birth and obtained during the initial screening examination, encompassing demographic, maternal, clinical, and neonatal intensive care unit-related data. The models' performances were assessed using five machine learning (ML) classifier algorithms: logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Performance metrics were calculated, and the top ten parameters with the highest predictive value were identified. RESULTS In the cohort of 355 preterm infants, Model I, predicting ROP development using birth data, achieved a balanced accuracy of 80%, with gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) as the top predictive parameters. Model II, predicting treatment-requiring ROP using birth data, exhibited a balanced accuracy of 81%. Key predictive parameters included low GA, BW, 1-minute and 5-minute APGAR scores, and low erythrocyte counts. For Model III, predicting ROP using the first screening examination data, and Model IV, predicting treatment-requiring ROP using the same data, the accuracy values were 80% and 66%, respectively, with BW, daily weight gain, total O2 support duration, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio emerged as the most significant predictive parameters in both models. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the potential of ML models to predict ROP development and treatment need. Incorporating clinical and intensive care-related parameters can enhance ROP screening and clinical decision-making.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the relationship between platelet count (PLT) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), with the goal of identifying a straightforward screening method for the early detection of ROP. METHODS A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov from January 2005 to 26 September 2023. Subsequently, a subgroup analysis was performed. RESULTS This meta-analysis included ten studies involving 1762 neonates, with 747 cases of ROP identified. The pooled analysis indicated a significant decrease in mean platelet count among the ROP group compared to the non-ROP group (mean difference: -18.65, 95% confidence interval: -22.80 to -14.50, P < .00001). Subgroup analysis indicated that the heterogeneity in the results can be attributed to factors such as the location of the studies, gestational age (GA), and publication time. CONCLUSION Decreased PLT counts may be associated with the occurrence of ROP. The PLT count should be standardized according to the detection location, detection time and GA.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of preventable blindness in preterm infants. The association between red blood cell (RBC) parameters and the development of ROP remains unclear. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the association between RBC parameters and ROP treatment. This single-center, retrospective cohort study included preterm infants born at < 30 weeks of gestation. Data pertaining to RBC parameters and ROP treatment were obtained from the medical records. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to determine the cut-off values of the RBC parameters according to the need for ROP treatment. Multiple logistic regression analyses assessed the association between ROP treatment and RBC parameters at birth and on day of life (DOL) 28. We included 202 infants, and 44.1% were treated for ROP. After adjusting for confounders, we observed associations between ROP treatment and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values > 117.3 fL at birth (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]:2.3; 95% confidence intervals CI 1.0-5.3). Additionally, on DOL 28, hemoglobin (Hb) values < 9.9 g/dL (aOR:3.0; 95% CI 1.4-6.7), hematocrit (Hct) values < 31.0% (aOR:2.7; 95% CI 1.3-5.6), and red cell distribution width (RDW) values > 18.5% (aOR:2.6; 95% CI 1.1-6.2) were associated with ROP treatment. In conclusion, our study indicated that infants born at < 30 weeks of gestation with an MCV > 117.3 fL at birth, along with Hb < 9.9 g/dL, Hct < 31.0%, and RDW > 18.5% on DOL 28, had an increased risk of requiring ROP, warranting treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the relationship between the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). MATERIAL AND METHODS The medical records of 153 preterm infants born before the 34th week of gestation, were retrospectively reviewed. Complete blood cell (CBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) results measured within the first 24 h of life were recorded. NLR, LMR and PLR were calculated by dividing neutrophil count by lymphocyte count, lymphocyte count by monocyte count, and platelet count by lymphocyte count, respectively. Analysis of possible risk factors related with ROP development was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Results were compared between infants with and without ROP. RESULTS A total of 153 infants, of which 64 (41.9%) with ROP and 89 (58.1%) without ROP, were included in the study. While lymphocyte count and LMR were found to be significantly lower in infants with ROP (p = 0.015 and p = 0.044), neutrophil count and NLR were found to be significantly higher (p = 0.021 and p = 0.046, respectively). No significant difference were observed in platelet and monocyte count and PLR (p = 0.808, p = 0.170 and p = 0.075, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that gestational age, birth weight and NLR were major risk factors for the development of ROP (OR:0.59; p = 0.01, OR:1.00; p = 0.02 and OR: 2.56; p = 0.02, respectively). CONCLUSION This study supports that, in addition to prematurity, NLR on the first postnatal day has a significant predictive value in ROP.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinopathy caused by abnormal proliferation of blood vessels in premature infants. It can lead to retinal detachment and, in severe cases, blindness, rendering ROP a critical condition. Advances in neonatal medicine have improved survival rates of low birth weight and low gestational age infants. However, this progress has also led to a rise in incidence of ROP. Currently, premature birth, low birth weight and high postpartum oxygen levels are independent risk factors for ROP. Other factors include mode of delivery, multiple births, anemia, blood transfusion, maternal pregnancy factors, neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia, use of surfactants, arterial ductus arteriosus and necrotizing enterocolitis. Laboratory indicators in premature infants such as platelet count, levels of blood glucose, inflammatory cells, lipid and hemoglobin and blood transfusion may also be associated with ROP. However, the etiology and pathogenesis of ROP are not fully understood. A number of factors may influence the onset and progression of ROP, including decreased platelet counts, decreased hemoglobin levels, increased white blood cell counts, increased blood glucose levels, and disorders of lipid metabolism. The present study reviewed the effects of platelet count, hemoglobin, blood glucose, inflammatory cells and factors, blood lipids, and plasma metabolic pathways on ROP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), originally described as retrolental fibroplasia, represents an abnormal growth of blood vessels in the premature retina that can occur in response to oxygen therapy. The association between ROP and invasive mechanical ventilation has been widely studied in the literature; however, the relationships between different types of ventilation and ROP have not been as well documented. This study aimed to compare the association of ROP incidence with mechanical ventilation (MV), nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP), and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapies in 130 pre-term infants with gestational ages <32 weeks. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study includes 130 premature newborns, out of which 54 underwent MV therapy, either alone or in combination with nCPAP or HFNC therapy, 63 underwent nCPAP therapy, either alone or in combination with MV or HFNC therapy, and 23 underwent HFNC therapy, either alone or in combination with MV or nCPAP therapy. The relationships between ROP and the 3 types of ventilation were analyzed by univariate followed by multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS When adjusting for covariates, only nCPAP and birth weight were significantly associated with ROP, the former being a strong risk factor, with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 7.264 (95% CI, 2.622-20.120; P<0.001), and the latter being a weak protective factor, with an AOR of 0.998 (95% CI, 0.996-0.999; P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results showed nCPAP was a strong ROP risk factor, birth weight was a weak ROP protective factor, and MV and HFNC were not significantly associated with increased ROP risk.

Abstract
Aim Retinopathy of prematurity is a significant global cause of childhood blindness. This study aims to identify serum biomarkers that are associated with the development of ROP. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using PRISMA guidelines. Three databases were searched (Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science) from 2003 to March 2023. Only studies investigating serum biomarker levels in preterm infants (<37 weeks gestation) were included. Results Meta-analysis suggests that low serum IGF-1 levels have a strong association with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of -.46 [-.63, -.30], p < .001]. Meta-analysis suggests that higher serum glucose levels were associated with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of 1.25 [.94, 1.55], p < .001]. Meta-analysis suggests that thrombocytopenia is associated with the development of ROP [SMD (95% CI) of -.62 [-.86, -.37], p < .001]. Conclusion Low levels of serum IGF-1, high levels of serum glucose and thrombocytopenia all appear to have the strongest association with the development of ROP out of the 63 biomarkers investigated in this review. These associations highlight their potential use as diagnostic biomarkers in ROP, though further research is needed to establish the exact relationship between these biomarkers and disease pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to conduct a systematic review and Bayesian model-averaged meta-analysis (BMA) on the association between platelet counts and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS We searched for studies reporting on platelet counts (continuous variable) or thrombocytopenia (categorical variable) and severe ROP or aggressive posterior ROP (APROP). The timing of platelet counts was divided into Phase 1 (<2 weeks) and Phase 2 (around ROP treatment). BMA was used to calculate Bayes factors (BFs). The BF10 is the ratio of the probability of the data under the alternative hypothesis (H1) over the probability of the data under the null hypothesis (H0). RESULTS We included 21 studies. BMA showed an association between low platelet counts and severe ROP. The evidence was strong (BF10 = 13.5, 7 studies) for phase 1 and very strong (BF10 = 51.0, 9 studies) for phase 2. Thrombocytopenia (<100 × 109/L) in phase 2 was associated with severe ROP (BF10 = 28.2, 4 studies). Following adjustment for publication bias, only the association of severe ROP with thrombocytopenia remained with moderate evidence in favor of H1 (BF10 = 4.30). CONCLUSIONS Thrombocytopenia is associated with severe ROP. However, the evidence for this association was tempered when results were adjusted for publication bias.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate complete blood count (CBC) parameters in the first week of life as predictive biomarkers for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS Multicenter, prospective, observational study of a cohort of preterm infants born with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks or birth weight < 1500 g in eight Portuguese neonatal intensive care units. All demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from the first week of life were collected. Univariate logistic regression was used to assess risk factors for ROP and then multivariate regression was performed. RESULTS A total of 455 infants were included in the study. The median GA was 29.6 weeks, and the median birth weight was 1295 g. One hundred and seventy-two infants (37.8%) developed ROP. Median values of erythrocytes (p < 0.001), hemoglobin (p < 0.001), hematocrit (p < 0.001), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (p < 0.001), lymphocytes (p = 0.035), and platelets (p = 0.003) of the group of infants diagnosed with ROP any stage were lower than those without ROP. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (p = 0.044), red blood cell distribution width (RDW) (p < 0.001), erythroblasts (p < 0.001), neutrophils (p = 0.030), neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio (p = 0.028), and basophils (p = 0.003) were higher in the ROP group. Higher values of MCV, erythroblasts, and basophils remained significantly associated with ROP after multivariate regression. CONCLUSION In our cohort, the increase in erythroblasts, MCV, and basophils in the first week of life was significantly and independently associated with the development of ROP. These CBC parameters may be early predictive biomarkers for ROP.

Abstract
The development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) may be influenced by anemia or a low fetal/adult hemoglobin ratio. We aimed to analyze the association between DNA methyltransferase 3 β (DNMT3B) (rs2424913), methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) (rs1801133), and lysine-specific histone demethylase 1A (KDM1A) (rs7548692) polymorphisms, erythrocyte parameters during the first week of life, and ROP. In total, 396 infants (gestational age < 32 weeks or birth weight < 1500 g) were evaluated clinically and hematologically. Genotyping was performed using a MicroChip DNA on a platform employing iPlex MassARRAY®. Multivariate regression was performed after determining risk factors for ROP using univariate regression. In the group of infants who developed ROP red blood cell distribution width (RDW), erythroblasts, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were higher, while mean hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were lower; higher RDW was associated with KDM1A (AA), MTHFR (CC and CC + TT), KDM1A (AA) + MTHFR (CC), and KDM1A (AA) + DNMT3B (allele C); KDM1A (AA) + MTHFR (CC) were associated with higher RDW, erythroblasts, MCV, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH); higher MCV and MCH were also associated with KDM1A (AA) + MTHFR (CC) + DNMT3B (allele C). We concluded that the polymorphisms studied may influence susceptibility to ROP by modulating erythropoiesis and gene expression of the fetal/adult hemoglobin ratio.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a vasoproliferative vitreoretinal disorder, is the leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. Although angiogenic pathways have been the main focus, cytokine-mediated inflammation is also involved in ROP etiology. Herein, we illustrate the characteristics and actions of all cytokines involved in ROP pathogenesis. The two-phase (vaso-obliteration followed by vasoproliferation) theory outlines the evaluation of cytokines in a time-dependent manner. Levels of cytokines may even differ between the blood and the vitreous. Data from animal models of oxygen-induced retinopathy are also valuable. Although conventional cryotherapy and laser photocoagulation are well established and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents are available, less destructive novel therapeutics that can precisely target the signaling pathways are required. Linking the cytokines involved in ROP to other maternal and neonatal diseases and conditions provides insights into the management of ROP. Suppressing disordered retinal angiogenesis via the modulation of hypoxia-inducible factor, supplementation of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1/IGF-binding protein 3 complex, erythropoietin, and its derivatives, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and inhibition of secretogranin III have attracted the attention of researchers. Recently, gut microbiota modulation, non-coding RNAs, and gene therapies have shown promise in regulating ROP. These emerging therapeutics can be used to treat preterm infants with ROP.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this review was to compile existing evidence on the role of platelets in the development of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the available studies and critically discuss the reported data. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed from January 2000 to January 2022, and the reference lists of the included studies were screened manually. RESULTS There were 19 primary studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Experimental research indicated lower platelet count in mice oxygen-induced retinopathy model compared with normoxia controls, while platelet transfusions suppressed neovascularisation. The latter finding was not consistently confirmed in clinical research, where a low platelet count, an increased number of thrombopenic episodes and of platelet transfusions have all been implicated in the development of ROP requiring treatment, either type I or aggressive posterior or both. However, existing studies exhibit significant clinical heterogeneity and present methodological limitations that imperil their reliability and validity. CONCLUSION Platelet deficiency has been associated with severe ROP. However, critical thresholds of platelet parameters are still unrecognised. Future research is required to determine whether platelet parameters can be predictive biomarkers for ROP requiring treatment and at what thresholds.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the main risk factor for vision-threatening disease in premature infants with low birth weight. An accumulating number of independent studies have focused on ROP pathogenesis and have demonstrated that laser photocoagulation therapy and/or anti-VEGF treatment are effective. However, early diagnosis of ROP is still critical. At present, the main method of ROP screening is based on binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. However, the judgment of whether ROP occurs and whether treatment is necessary depends largely on ophthalmologists with a great deal of experience. Therefore, it is essential to develop a simple, accurate and effective diagnostic method. This review describes recent findings on novel biomarkers for the prediction, diagnosis and prognosis of ROP patients. The novel biomarkers were separated into the following categories: metabolites, cytokines and growth factors, non-coding RNAs, iconography, gut microbiota, oxidative stress biomarkers, and others. Biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity are urgently needed for the clinical applications of ROP. In addition, using non-invasive or minimally invasive methods to obtain samples is also important. Our review provides an overview of potential biomarkers of ROP.

Abstract
Background Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disease in premature infants that causes lifetime visual impairment and blindness in the early ages. In this study, we investigated the differences in the values of clinical laboratory parameters between different ROP and its remission/progression statuses regarding stages and zones. Methods This historical cohort study includes 828 infants divided into two groups after the first examination containing ROP infants and controls. The biochemical and hematological parameters of the two groups have been collected from the patient's history. Results In infants with ROP, the hematopoiesis-related parameters, including the mean level of hemoglobin, total bilirubin, potassium, calcium were significantly less than controls (P=0.039, P=0.001, P=0.001, and P=0.046, respectively). The percentages of reticulocyte and the levels of BUN in ROP patients were significantly higher than in normal infants (P=0.015 and p <0.001, respectively). Moreover, the levels of hemoglobin and BUN were significantly different in the different zones of ROP (P=0.017 and P=0.001, respectively). Also, higher hemoglobin levels, total bilirubin, and CRP were observed in the reduced stages of ROP (P=0.041, P=0.045, and P=0.039, respectively). Conclusion Laboratory parameters are different in different stages, zones and remission/ progression ROP infants.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the role of thrombocyte parameters in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) development. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 120 preterm infants in total. Group 1 was formed by infants who developed type-1 ROP and received treatment. Group 2 was formed by infants who developed ROP and were not treated for ROP. Infants who did not develop ROP and whose retinal vascularization was completed in their follow-up formed Group 3. Gestational age, birth weight, and genders of groups were recorded. Platelet (PLT) count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) values were obtained from complete blood count. Platelet mass index (PMI) was calculated by multiplying the PLT count by MPV value. Thrombocytopenia was defined as PLT count <150 × 1000/μL. All parameters were compared between the groups. RESULTS There were 40 preterm infants in each group. The mean PLT count was 272.43 ± 122.67 in Group 1, 333.32 ± 133.06 in Group 2, and 310.03 ± 119.41 in Group 3. The difference in PLT count between the groups was not significant (p=0.094). Thrombocytopenia was observed in 25% of Group 1, 10% of Group 2, and 10% of Group 3 (p=0.095). No statistically significant difference was found in terms of MPV, PDW, and PMI values between the groups (p=0.102, p=0.097, and p=0.298, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Although PLT count was lower and thrombocytopenia rate was higher in the type-1 ROP group, the differences were not found to be significant. Further prospective studies are required to evaluate the role of thrombocytes in ROP pathogenesis.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic potential of systemic inflammatory index in the course of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods: This is a retrospective case-control study. 303 infants with a gestational age of ≤35 weeks were screened with and without ROP at birth and 1 month after the birth of complete blood counts (CBC) were included in this study. Serum neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) was calculated at birth and one month after. LMR was calculated by dividing the absolute lymphocyte count by the absolute monocyte count. NLR and PLR were determined by dividing the absolute neutrophil count or the absolute platelet count by the absolute lymphocyte count, respectively. The SII was calculated by the formula = neutrophilxplatelet/lymphocyte. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 22 (SPSS for Windows, version 22.0; SPSS, Inc. Chicago, IL, USA). Results: A total of 303 infants were included 145 with ROP and 158 without ROP. The NLR, LMR, PLR and SII values were 0.56 ± 1.17/0.51 ± 1.04 (P = 0.997), 13.7 ± 18/9.49 ± 13.1 (P = 0.014), 31.69 ± 68/24.1 ± 37.7 (P = 0.268), 131.42 ± 326/124.66 ± 267 (P = 0.935) in with ROP and without ROP infant at birth respectively. The NLR, LMR, PLR, and SII values were 0.68 ± 1.27/0.34 ± 0.99 (P = 0.001), 2.58 ± 6.01/2.46 ± 14.5 (P = 0.706), 47.5 ± 78.33/33.55 ± 42.4 (P = 0.035), and 253 ± 681/114 ± 345 (P = 0.001), respectively in with ROP and without ROP infant at 1 month after birth. Conclusion: The NLR, PLR, and SII seem an independent predictor of the development of ROP.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative retinal vascular disorder attributed to an ischaemic stimulus in preterm infants. Haemoglobin, the main component for oxygen transportation, may be implicated in ROP development. This retrospective study compared the mean weekly haemoglobin levels between infants with and without ROP over the first six weeks of life. Premature infants of less than 32 weeks gestational age and less than 1.5 kg birth weight were grouped into age and birth weight-matched ROP cases and controls. Weekly mean haemoglobin levels were documented. An independent t-test was used to analyze the difference in mean haemoglobin levels between infants with ROP and infants without ROP. Adjustment for confounders was performed using one-way analysis of covariance. There was a statistically significant difference in adjusted mean haemoglobin levels between the ROP and non-ROP group during the first week of life (p = 0.038). No significant intergroup differences were observed at the other weeks. Haemoglobin monitoring during the first week of postnatal life may be useful to guide ROP screening in premature infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between red cell distribution width (RDW) values and the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted on a total of 159 infants with gestational age (GA) < 35 weeks including 77 infants diagnosed as ROP (patients' group) and 82 infants without ROP (control group) between September 2015 and January 2018. RDW values of the preterm infants were obtained from their medical records (routine postpartum cord blood sample and follow-up venous blood samples taken at first week, second week and first month). The possible relationship between RDW values and clinical features of ROP development was evaluated. RESULTS The mean GA of all infants was 29.2 ± 2.4 (24-35) weeks, and the mean birth weight was 1268 ± 419 (550-2500) g. The RDW values measured in the first and the second weeks were significantly higher in infants with ROP compared with those wihout ROP (p < .001 for both). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of cord blood and first month RDW values (p = .719, p = .108, respectively). The first and second week's RDW values of infants with ROP requiring treatment (severe ROP) were significantly higher than those of infants with ROP not requiring treatment (mild ROP) (p = .005, p = .031, respectively), but no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of cord blood and first month values (p = .114 and p = .371, respectively). CONCLUSION RDW is an easily accessible and inexpensive marker that may reflect the clinical risk factors for ROP. Follow-up measures of RDW have the potential to help clinicians for the prediction of ROP development in the first 2 weeks postnatally.
