Abstract
INTRODUCTION Lung function has been associated with cognitive decline and dementia, but the extent to which lung function impacts brain structural changes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of lung function with structural macro- and micro-brain changes across mid- and late-life. METHODS The study included a total of 37 164 neurologic disorder-free participants aged 40-70 years from the UK Biobank, who underwent brain MRI scans 9 years after baseline. After 2.5 years, a subsample (n = 3895) underwent a second MRI scan. Lung function was assessed using a composite score based on forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow, and divided into tertiles (i.e., low, moderate, and high). Structural brain volumes (including total brain, gray matter, white matter, hippocampus, and white matter hyperintensities) and diffusion markers (fractional anisotropy [FA] and mean diffusivity [MD]) were assessed. Data were analyzed using linear regression and mixed-effects models. RESULTS Compared to high lung function, low lung function was associated with smaller total brain, gray matter, white matter, and hippocampal volume, as well as lower white matter integrity. Over the 2.5-year follow-up, low lung function was associated with reduced white matter and hippocampal volume, reduced FA, and increased white matter hyperintensity volume and MD. After stratification by age, the associations remained significant among adults aged 40-60 years and 60+ years. CONCLUSION Low lung function is associated with macro- and micro-structural brain changes involving both neurodegenerative and vascular pathologies. This association is significant in both mid- and late-life.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nutrition intake is one of the modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. Whether energy and protein intakes alter the association between pulmonary function (PF) and cognition has not been studied. METHODS We made use of information from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. PF measures, including forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and peak expiratory flow (PEF), were calculated, whereas cognitive function was assessed through four tests: the Immediate Recall test (IRT), the Delayed Recall test (DRT), the Animal Fluency test (AFT) and the Digit Symbol Substitution test (DSST). Energy and protein intakes were measured using the 24-h dietary recall method. Weighted generalized linear regression was performed upon adjustment for covariates. Further interaction analyses were conducted to investigate the effect of energy and protein intakes on the association between PF and cognition. RESULTS We finally included 803 participants aged ≥ 60 years (54.4% female, weighted value). After adjusting for covariates, multiple measures (including FEV1, FVC, PEF, and composite PF) were all positively associated with better global cognition and the DSST score (P < 0.05). A stronger positive association between the DSST score and FEV1 (P for interaction = 0.001), FVC (P for interaction = 0.004), PEF (P for interaction = 0.003), and composite PF (P for interaction = 0.001) in lower energy intake. Similar results were observed in lower protein intake (all P for interaction < 0.05). CONCLUSION Higher PF was independently associated with improved specific components of cognitive function (i.e., the DSST score). The positive association between PF and the DSST score was stronger in individuals with lower energy and protein intakes.

Abstract
Menopause is one the most crucial stages in a female's life. Identifying the education gaps regarding menopause is important, thus this study aims to explain the health-related needs of females during menopause. Scopus, PubMed, Scientific Information Database, and Web of Science databases were searched for the available observational (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional), systematic review, meta-analysis, and clinical trial studies (2007-2021) using keywords, such as 'Educational Needs Assessment,' 'Assessment of Healthcare Needs,' 'menopause,' 'climacteric,' 'premenopause,' and 'postmenopause.' A total of 180 out of 5,705 papers were evaluated after considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The educational needs of females during menopause in the reviewed studies include osteoporosis, oral and dental problems, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, lung diseases, infectious diseases, musculoskeletal problems, urinary problems, breast cancer, defecation problems, genital disorders, special diseases such as eye diseases and hypothyroidism and hormone therapy, mental disorders, cognitive function, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, physical activity, supplement consumption, public health issues, health education, fall, and nutrition. The study results reveal that females during postmenopause require training, counseling, and support in all aspects to get through this challenging time, and providing these services, infrastructure, appropriate policy, and the use and support of the medical team's capacity are all required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a severe and common mental disorder. The association between depressive symptoms and lung function remains unclear. To determine whether depressive symptoms are associated with lung function in U.S. adults without pulmonary diseases. METHODS A cross-sectional study of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2007 to 2012 were used to estimate the relationship between depressive symptoms and lung function. Depressive symptoms were determined by a participant's score on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Forced Expiratory Volume 1st Second (FEV1) Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) were determined by the spirometry. Weighted multivariate linear regression was used to analyze this relationship and subgroup analyses were performed. RESULTS Of 8027 participants, 576 (7.18 %) participants with depression. Depression group had significant lower FEV1 and FVC than non-depression group. After adjustment for all covariates, there was a significant negative association between depressive symptoms and FVC (β -4.84, 95 % CI -9.10 to -0.57), especially in non-Hispanic White people (β -9.03, 95 % CI -14.38 to -3.69). There was no independent association between depressive symptoms and FEV1 in all participants, whereas the association was significant in non-Hispanic White people (β -4.91, 95 % CI -9.50 to -0.32). CONCLUSIONS High depressive symptoms were independently associated with decline of FVC among U.S. adults without pulmonary diseases, especially in non-Hispanic White people. In addition, although it was not independently associated with FEV1 in all participants, depressive symptom score was also negatively associated with FEV1 in non-Hispanic White people.

Abstract
Naked mole-rats (NMRs) (Heterocephalus glaber) are highly social and subterranean rodents with large communal colonies in burrows containing low oxygen levels. The inhibition of severe hypoxic conditions is of particular interest to this study. To understand the mechanisms that facilitate neuronal preservation during hypoxia, we investigated the proteins regulating hypoxia tolerance in NMR hippocampal neurons. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1), a transmembrane scaffolding protein, confers prosurvival signalling in the central nervous system. The present study aimed to investigate the role of Cav-1 in hypoxia-induced neuronal injury. Western blotting analysis and immunocytochemistry showed that Cav-1 expression was significantly upregulated in NMR hippocampal neurons under 8% O2 conditions for 8 h. Cav-1 alleviates apoptotic neuronal death from hypoxia. Downregulation of Cav-1 by lentiviral vectors suggested damage to NMR hippocampal neurons under hypoxic conditions in vitro and in vivo. Overexpression of Cav-1 by LV-Cav-1 enhanced hypoxic tolerance of NMR hippocampal neurons in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, the levels of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) are also increased under hypoxic conditions. After inhibiting the binding of HIF-1α to hypoxia response elements in the DNA by echinomycin, Cav-1 levels were downregulated significantly. Furthermore, chromatin immunoprecipitation assays showed the direct role of HIF1α in regulating the expression levels of Cav-1 in NMR hippocampal neurons under hypoxic conditions. These findings suggest that Cav-1 plays a critical role in modulating the apoptosis of NMR hippocampal neurons and warrant further studies targeting Cav-1 to treat hypoxia-associated brain diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The relationship between pulmonary function (PF) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, and brain pathologies remains unclear. METHODS A total of 1312 dementia-free participants, including a cognitively intact group (n = 985) and an MCI group (n = 327), were followed for up to 21 years to detect incident MCI and dementia. PF was assessed at baseline with a composite score and tertiled. Over follow-up, 540 participants underwent autopsies for neuropathological assessment. RESULTS Compared to the highest PF, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) of the lowest PF were 1.95 (1.43-2.66) for MCI in the cognitively intact group and 1.55 (1.03-2.33) for dementia in the MCI group. Low PF was further related to Alzheimer's disease pathology (odds ratio [OR] 1.32, 95% CI 1.19-1.47) and vascular pathology (OR 3.05, 95% CI 1.49-6.25). DISCUSSION Low PF increases MCI risk and accelerates MCI progression to dementia. Both neurodegenerative and vascular mechanisms may underlie the PF-dementia association.

Abstract
The association of poor pulmonary function (PF) with cognitive trajectories and structural brain differences remains unclear. Within the Rush Memory and Aging Project, 1377 dementia-free subjects were followed up to 21 years. PF was assessed with a composite score measured at baseline. Global and domain-specific cognitive function was assessed annually constructed from 19 cognitive tests. A subsample of 351 participants underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the cross-sectional association between PF and structural brain volumes. We found that low PF was related to faster decline in global cognition, and domain-specific function including episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, visuospatial ability, and perceptual speed. In addition, low PF was associated with smaller volumes of total brain, white matter and gray matter, and larger white matter hyperintensities volume. Our results suggest that low PF is associated with faster cognitive decline, and both neurodegeneration and vascular brain lesions may underlie the association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a common mental disorder in middle-aged and elderly people, which seriously affects their physical health and life quality.So far, whether pulmonary function is a factor in depression has not been tested.The purpose of this study was to test whether pulmonary function was independently associated with depression and to assess the effects of cognitive ability and sleep time on this association. METHODS In this analysis, 5,235 participants from the Chinese Longitudinal Study of Health and Retirement were included. Participants were registered in 2015 and followed up in 2018. The relationship between pulmonary function and depression was estimated by binary logistic regression model. The mediated role of cognitive ability was examined by intermediary analysis, and the interaction between pulmonary function and sleep time on depression was discussed. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding factors, it was found that higher baseline pulmonary function was the protective factor of depression (OR [95%CI]=0.524 [0.394-0.697] for the lowest quantile vs the highest quantile). Cognitive ability explained 14.55% of the association between pulmonary function and depression, pulmonary function and sleep time on the effects of depression have a combined interaction, RERI (95%CI) = 0.545 (0.053-1.038). CONCLUSIONS High baseline pulmonary function is independently associated with a lower risk of depression, which is partly mediated by cognitive ability. Pulmonary function and sleep time have synergy with the effects of depression. These findings show that pulmonary function, cognitive ability and sleep time are reliable predictors of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies found associations between pulmonary function (PF) and cognition, but these are limited by mostly cross-sectional design and a single measure of PF (typically forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]). Our objective was to prospectively analyze the association of repeatedly measured PF with cognition. METHODS We studied 3 499 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults cohort with cognition measured at year 25 (Y25) and Y30, and PF (FEV1 and forced vital capacity [FVC], reflecting better PF) measured up to 6 times from Y0 to Y20. Cognition was measured via Stroop test, Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test [RAVLT], and digit symbol substitution test [DSST], which capture executive function, verbal learning and memory, and attention and psychomotor speed, respectively; lower Stroop, and higher RAVLT and DSST scores indicate better cognition. We modeled linear, cross-sectional associations between cognition and PF at Y30 (mean age 55), and mixed models to examine associations between cognition at Y25-Y30 and longitudinal PF (both annual rate of change, and cumulative PF from Y0 to Y20). RESULTS At Y30, FEV1 and FVC were cross-sectionally associated with all 3 measures of cognition (β = 0.08-0.12, p < .01-.02). Annual change from peak FEV1/FVC ratio was associated with Stroop and DSST (β = 18.06, 95% CI = 7.71-28.40; β = 10.30, 95% CI = 0.26-20.34, respectively), but not RAVLT. Cumulative FEV1 and FVC were associated with Stroop and DSST (β = 0.07-0.12, p < .01-.02), but only cumulative FEV1 was associated with RAVLT (β = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.00-0.14). CONCLUSIONS We identified prospective associations between measures of PF and cognition even at middle ages, adding evidence of a prospective association between reduced PF and cognitive decline.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine whether pulmonary function and cognition are independently associated at multiple time points. We included 8264 participants (49.9% women) aged 50-94 years at baseline from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in our analysis. Participants were enrolled in 2011 and followed up in 2013 and 2015. Cognitive function was assessed through a face-to-face interview in each survey. Pulmonary function was assessed via peak expiratory flow. Pulmonary function and cognitive function decreased significantly with age in both genders. Individuals in quintile 5 of pulmonary function had a relative increase in immediate memory (β [95% CI]: 0.19 [0.09, 0.30]) and delayed memory (0.16 [0.04, 0.28]) during follow-up compared with those in quintile 1. In the repeated-measures analysis, each standard deviation increment of pulmonary function was associated with a 0.44 (95% CI: 0.34, 0.53), 0.12 (0.09, 0.15), 0.12 (0.08, 0.16), 0.08 (0.06, 0.11), and 0.10 (0.07, 0.14) higher increase in global cognitive score, immediate memory, delayed memory, orientation, and subtraction calculation, respectively. The inverse association between pulmonary function and cognitive decline during follow-up was more evident in women (p for interaction = .0333), low-educated individuals (p for interaction = .0002), or never smokers (p for interaction = .0412). In conclusion, higher baseline pulmonary function was independently associated with a lower rate of cognitive decline in older adults. The positive association between pulmonary function and cognition was stronger in women, lower-educated individuals, or never smokers.

Abstract
Maintenance of lung function is an often underappreciated, yet critical component of healthy aging. Given the unprecedented shift in the average age of Canadians over the next half century, it will be important to investigate the determinants of lung function in the elderly. In the following study, we estimated the association between lung function and a broad array of factors related to sociodemographics, lifestyle, chronic medical conditions and psychosocial factors in older adults aged 45-86 years old using cross-sectional data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging (n = 21,338). In addition to examining the entire cohort, we also performed stratified analyses within men/women, adults aged 45-64/65+, and healthy/comorbid. In multivariable regression, our explanatory factors (excluding age, sex, height and ethnicity) were able to explain 17% and 11% of the total variance in FEV1 and FEV1/FVC, respectively. Notable and significant contributions were observed for respiratory disease, smoking, obesity, income, and physical activity, while psychosocial factors mainly exhibited non-significant associations. Generally, these associations were stronger for males than females, and adults 65 and older as compared to those aged 45-64. Our findings indicate that there are pervasive and generally under-recognized sociodemographic and lifestyle factors that exhibit significant associations with FEV1 and FEV1/FVC in older adults. While implication of causality in these relationships is not possible due to the cross-sectional nature of the study, future work aiming to investigate determinants of lung health in older adults may choose to target these factors, given that many are modifiable.

Abstract
The presence of an apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele, lower physical fitness, smoking, and lower serum vitamin B-12 have been reported as contributing to poorer cognitive function in LBC1921 at age 79, after adjusting for childhood intelligence. Because incident dementia was not previously ascertained within LBC1921, it is possible that preclinical or unrecognized cases at age 79 influenced findings. Dementia cases arising over approximately 16 years of follow-up were determined by a consensus using evidence from electronic medical records, death certificates, and clinical reviews. The analyses from the original reports were repeated after the exclusion of those who had developed dementia. In a subsequent set of analyses, the authors considered the potential impact of terminal decline, excluding those participants who died within 4 years of baseline testing. Positive APOE ε4 status was found to be associated with poorer Logical Memory (Wechsler, 1987) at age 79 (F(1, 355) = 8.16, p = .005, ηp2 = 0.022; n = 359) and lower Moray House Test (Scottish Council for Research in Education, 1933) score at age 79 (F(1, 357) = 4.27, p = .04, ηp2 = 0.012; n = 363). Lower age 79 IQ was associated with smoking (F(2, 360) = 3.67, p = .026, ηp2 = 0.020; n = 367), lower vitamin B-12 (Sβ = 0.11, p = .014; n = 367), and poorer physical fitness (Sβ = 0.21, p < .001; n = 359). Only the relationship with physical fitness remained significant after excluding those who died within 4 years of baseline (Sβ = 0.203, p < .001; n = 310). Unrecognized dementia had little or no effect on determinants of lifetime cognitive ageing in LBC1921. Terminal decline may have accounted for the associations with age 11 to age 79 cognitive change. Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review examines research and practical applications of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) as a basis for establishing specific criteria for evaluating relevant international scientific literature. The aims were to establish the extent of international dissemination and use of WHODAS 2.0 and analyze psychometric research on its various translations and adaptations. In particular, we wanted to highlight which psychometric features have been investigated, focusing on the factor structure, reliability, and validity of this instrument. METHOD Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, we conducted a search for publications focused on "whodas" using the ProQuest, PubMed, and Google Scholar electronic databases. RESULTS We identified 810 studies from 94 countries published between 1999 and 2015. WHODAS 2.0 has been translated into 47 languages and dialects and used in 27 areas of research (40% in psychiatry). CONCLUSIONS The growing number of studies indicates increasing interest in the WHODAS 2.0 for assessing individual functioning and disability in different settings and individual health conditions. The WHODAS 2.0 shows strong correlations with several other measures of activity limitations; probably due to the fact that it shares the same disability latent variable with them. Implications for Rehabilitation WHODAS 2.0 seems to be a valid, reliable self-report instrument for the assessment of disability. The increasing interest in use of the WHODAS 2.0 extends to rehabilitation and life sciences rather than being limited to psychiatry. WHODAS 2.0 is suitable for assessing health status and disability in a variety of settings and populations. A critical issue for rehabilitation is that a single "minimal clinically important .difference" score for the WHODAS 2.0 has not yet been established.
