Iron oxide modified polyethersulfone/cellulose acetate blend membrane for enhanced defluoridation application

Bio-sorbent from castor oil polyurethane foam containing cellulose-halloysite nanocomposite for removal of manganese, nickel and cobalt ions from water

In order to mitigate the contamination of water with heavy metals, caused by mining dam failures in Brumadinho and Mariana in Brazil, eco-friendly bio-based castor oil polyurethane foams, containing a cellulose-halloysite green nanocomposite were prepared. Polyurethane foams containing none (PUF-0), 5%wt (PUF-5), and 10%wt (PUF-10) of the nanocomposite were obtained. The application of the material in aqueous media was verified through an investigation of the efficiency of adsorption, the adsorption capacity, and the adsorption kinetics in pH= 2 and pH= 6.5 for manganese, nickel, and cobalt ions. An increase of 5.47 times in manganese adsorption capacity was found after only 30 min in contact with a solution having this ion at pH= 6.5 for PUF-5 and 11.38 times for PUF-10 when both were compared with PUF-0. Adsorption efficiency was respectively 68.17% at pH= 2 for PUF-5% and 100% for PUF-10 after 120 h, while for the control foam, PUF-0, the adsorption efficiency was only 6.90%.

Thin film poly(vinyl alcohol)-polysulfone composite membranes based on recycled polysulfone: salt separation performances

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-coated membranes on polysulfone (Ps) (Memb-Pv) were cross-linked using the dibasic maleic acid. The tailoring of membrane properties (viz. hydrophilicity, permeability) develops through the ester linkage due to cross-linking of PVA and maleic acid (MA). Series of Ps asymmetric membranes were prepared using the successive stages of phase inversion of Ps materials. The recyclability approaches of polysulfone (Ps) pertained. The characteristics and transport properties of all the membranes are evaluated. FTIR-ATR, scanning electron (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used for the structural characterization of the membranes. The salient features of Memb-Pv composite membranes support promising results in desalination. The work aimed to highlight the trade-off between the flux and selectivity of composite membranes' salts (bi-/monovalent) through the recycled Ps matrix. The number of recycling stages influences the salt separation performance. The sulfate rejection differs from Memb-IPv (93.26%) to Memb-IVPv (86.70%) for water-I matrix using 2500 mg/L. The defluoridation potential of the membranes is also convincing. The defluoridation performance of Memb-IPv is 87% for 10 mg/L. A significant dimension is added regarding salt separation performance's dependence on the water matrices' nature. The decrease in fluoride separation is ~ 1-3% for the water-2 matrix as the TDS increases.

Microcrystalline Cellulose-Blended Polyethersulfone Membranes for Enhanced Water Permeability and Humic Acid Removal

A novel polyethersulfone (PES)/microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) composite membrane for humic acid (HA) removal in water was fabricated using the phase inversion method by blending hydrophilic MCC with intrinsically hydrophobic PES in a lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide (LiCl/DMAc) co-solvent system. A rheological study indicated that the MCC-containing casting solutions exhibited a significant increase in viscosity, which directly influenced the composite membrane's pore structure. Compared to the pristine PES membrane, the composite membranes have a larger surface pore size, elongated finger-like structure, and presence of sponge-like pores. The water contact angle and pure water flux of the composite membranes indicated an increase in hydrophilicity of the modified membranes. However, the permeability of the composite membranes started to decrease at 3 wt.% MCC and beyond. The natural organic matter removal experiments were performed using humic acid (HA) as the surface water pollutant. The hydrophobic HA rejection was significantly increased by the enhanced hydrophilic PES/MCC composite membrane via the hydrophobic-hydrophilic interaction and pore size exclusion. This study provides insight into the utilization of a low-cost and environmentally friendly additive to improve the hydrophilicity of PES membranes for efficient removal of HA in water.

Polydopamine-Assisted Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2)-Modified PES Tight Ultrafiltration Mixed-Matrix Membranes: Enhanced Dye Separation Performance

Tight ultrafiltration (TUF) membranes with high performance have attracted more and more attention in the separation of organic molecules. To improve membrane performance, some methods such as interface polymerization have been applied. However, these approaches have complex operation procedures. In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) modified MoS₂ (MoS₂@PDA) blending polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with smaller pore size and excellent selectivity was fabricated by a simple phase inversion method. The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of as-prepared MoS₂@PDA mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) changes, and the effective separation of dye molecules in MoS₂@PDA MMMs with different concentrations were obtained. The addition amount of MoS₂@PDA increased from 0 to 4.5 wt %, resulting in a series of membranes with the MWCO values of 7402.29, 7007.89, 5803.58, 5589.50, 6632.77, and 6664.55 Da. The MWCO of the membrane M3 (3.0 wt %) was the lowest, the pore size was defined as 2.62 nm, and the pure water flux was 42.0 L m⁻² h⁻¹ bar⁻¹. The rejection of Chromotrope 2B (C2B), Reactive Blue 4 (RB4), and Janus Green B (JGB) in aqueous solution with different concentrations of dyes was better than that of unmodified membrane. The separation effect of M3 and M0 on JGB at different pH values was also investigated. The rejection rate of M3 to JGB was higher than M0 at different pH ranges from 3 to 11. The rejection of M3 was 98.17–99.88%. When pH was 11, the rejection of membranes decreased with the extension of separation time. Specifically, at 180 min, the rejection of M0 and M3 dropped to 77.59% and 88.61%, respectively. In addition, the membrane had a very low retention of salt ions, Nacl 1.58%, Na₂SO₄ 10.52%, MgSO₄ 4.64%, and MgCl₂ 1.55%, reflecting the potential for separating salts and dyes of MoS₂@PDA/PES MMMs.

Green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles using Phoenix dactylifera waste as bioreductant for effective dye degradation and antibacterial performance in wastewater treatment

Production of multi-functional zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) for wastewater treatment through green-approaches is a desirable alternative for conventional synthesis routes. Biomass waste valorization for nanoparticles synthesis has received increased research attention. The present study reports date pulp waste (DPW) utilization as an effective bio-reductant for green-synthesis of ZnO-NPs. A simple and eco-friendly process with low reaction time and calcination temperature was adopted for DPW mediated ZnO-NPs (DP-ZnO-NPs) synthesis. Microscopic investigations of DP-ZnO-NPs confirmed the non-agglomeration and spherical nature of particles with mean diameter of 30 nm. EDX and XPS analysis defined the chemical composition and product purity of DP-ZnO-NPs. UV and photoluminescence studies exhibited surface plasmonic resonance at 381 nm and fluorescent nature of DP-ZnO-NPs. FTIR studies established a formation mechanism outline for DP-ZnO-NPs. XRD and Raman investigations confirmed the crystalline and hexagonal wurtzite phase of DP-ZnO-NPs. DSC/TG analysis displayed the thermal stability of DP-ZnO-NPs with <10 wt% loss upto 700 °C. Photocatalytic degradation of hazardous methylene blue and eosin yellow dyes using DP-ZnO-NPs, showed rapid decomposition rate with 90 % degradation efficiency. Additionally, DP-ZnO-NPs demonstrated significant antibacterial effects on various pathogenic bacteria in terms of zone-of-inhibition measured by disc-diffusion method. Thus, the as-prepared DP-ZnO-NPs is suitable for industrial wastewater treatment.

Continuous Phenol Removal Using a Liquid–Solid Circulating Fluidized Bed

A liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) helps to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fluidized beds by using a particle separation and return system as an integral part of the overall reactor configuration. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of phenol from a synthetically prepared solution using fresh activated-carbon-coated glass beads. The morphological features and surface chemistry of the adsorbent were analyzed via SEM and FTIR techniques. The adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature were varied along with solution pH to assess their effects on the adsorbent performance for phenol removal. Isotherm modeling showed that the phenol removal using the activated-carbon glass beads followed the Langmuir model. Effectively, it was observed at an adsorbent loading of 2.5 g/150 mL of feed volume and a contact time of 3 h produced an 80% efficiency in the batch study. Furthermore, on scaling it up to the column, the desired 98% phenol-removal efficiency was obtained with an adsorbent dosage of 250 g and contact time of 25 min. Adsorbent regeneration using 5% (v/v) ethanol showed a 64% desorption of phenol from the sorbent within 20 min in the LSCFB.
