Nevoid acanthosis nigricans: Report of four cases localized to the umbilicus

Nevoid acanthosis nigricans is a rare, benign form of acanthosis nigricans. Of the 24 cases documented in the literature, only two are exclusively localized to the umbilicus. We present four cases of nevoid acanthosis nigricans localized to the umbilicus; in patients less than 25 years of age, with no known co-morbidities, three of whom were females. Two of the cases received, with good response, treatment based on topical calcipotriol, a medication not previously reported to be used for this indication. Contrary to other types of acanthosis nigricans, the nevoid acanthosis nigricans is not associated with any syndrome, endocrinopathy, obesity, medication, or neoplasia and it can be confused with other pathologies such as epidermal nevus or dermatosis neglecta.

Multiple Aplasia Cutis Congenita Lesions of the Scalp: A Case Study

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare condition that presents at birth as an absence of skin that does not usually involve underlying structures. Occurring in 3/10,000 live births, ACC is evenly distributed between males and females; the risk of ACC increases to 7 percent in consanguineous marriages. Up to 86 percent of lesions are found on the scalp in the midline vertex position. Lesions can also be found on the trunk and limbs, as with Adams-Oliver syndrome or accompanying epidermolysis bullosa. ACC is associated with chromosomal abnormalities and 35-50 percent of the time with trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). This case study presents an infant with multiple ACC lesions of the scalp. The pathophysiology, treatment, potential long-term complications, and nursing considerations are discussed.

Bilateral hyperkeratosis of the nipples and areolae with linear nevus: a rare case report and review of the literature

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is an uncommon dermatosis without well-defined etiology, which occurs mostly in young women and may only be a cosmetic problem. In 1938, Levy-Frankel classified this disease into three variants; type I involves hyperkeratosis with an epidermal nevus, and has rarely been reported. We report a case of a 23-year-old woman with long-term bilateral pigmentation and thickening of the nipples and areolae, accompanied with dark brown, flat lesions with a linear distribution on her left forearm. The verrucous plaques were asymptomatic and could be scratched off by the patient herself. Consequently, she did not seek medical care for more than ten years. The prevalence of this condition is likely underestimated because many affected individuals are not sufficiently motivated to seek medical attention.

Successful Breastfeeding Outcome of a Woman with a Nevus of the Nipple: A Case Study

Unusual conditions of the nipple and breast may interfere with breastfeeding. Nevi of the nipple are rare, and breastfeeding outcomes of women with this condition have only been briefly reported in the literature. This case describes the proactive lactation management and successful breastfeeding outcome of a woman with a large, roughly textured nevus located on her right nipple and areola.
