Occupational therapy personnel and AIDS: attitudes, knowledge, and fears

Scoping the field: identifying key research priorities in HIV and rehabilitation

The purpose of this project was to identify key research priorities related to HIV and rehabilitation. We conducted a scoping study which included a literature review of published and grey literature, followed by focus group and interview consultations with 28 participants including people living with HIV, researchers, educators, clinicians, and policy makers with expertise in HIV and rehabilitation. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify emergent themes related to research priorities in HIV and rehabilitation. The resulting Framework of HIV and Rehabilitation Research provided an outline for approaching research in the field. The framework included three overlapping research priorities: (a) living with HIV across the lifespan, (b) disability, and (c) rehabilitation that should be viewed through environmental and/or personal contextual lenses, using different methodological approaches. Six key research priorities from this framework were identified through additional consultation with new and returning participants including: (1) disability and episodic disability, (2) concurrent health conditions aging with HIV, (3) HIV and the brain, (4) labour force and income support, (5) access to and effectiveness of rehabilitation, and (6) development and evaluation of outcome measurement tools. These priorities inform a future plan for HIV and rehabilitation research that will increase our knowledge to enhance practice, programming and policy for people living with HIV.

Knowledge, attitude and willingness of Nigerian physiotherapists to provide care for patients living with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Adequate knowledge, positive attitude, and willingness to provide services are important factors in rendering competent and compassionate care to patients living with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Inadequate knowledge and poor attitude could exclude the application of the principles of logic and scientific methods to the practice of physiotherapy, and could result in fragmented care, with a potentially negative impact on treatment outcome and patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the Nigerian physiotherapists' global knowledge, attitude and willingness to provide care for patients living with AIDS (PLWA), and to (2) determine the relationship between socio-demographic variables and previous encounter with PLWA, and physiotherapists' knowledge, attitude and willingness to care for AIDS survivors.

METHODS

Using a 90-item two-part questionnaire that elicited sociodemographic and previous AIDS encounter information, and also assessed knowledge, attitude and willingness to provide care to PLWA, physiotherapists (N = 131) practicing in Nigeria were surveyed.

RESULTS

Overall, the physiotherapists showed unsatisfactory knowledge about AIDS, harbored negative attitude towards PLWA, and some were unwilling to provide care for PLWA. Previous experience caring for PLWA influenced their attitude, and modest but positive relationships were found between knowledge and attitude and between attitude and willingness.

CONCLUSION

The study underscores the need to address Nigerian physiotherapists' working knowledge deficits and negative attitudes to PLWA. A comprehensive AIDS education that would assist clinicians in exploring their attitude, stereotype and bias against PLWA is warranted.

Knowledge, attitude, and willingness of Nigerian physiotherapy students to provide care for patients living with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

In the current AIDS pandemics, equipping health professional students with adequate knowledge and positive attitude is necessary to produce graduates who can deliver appropriate intervention to patients infected with HIV or who have developed AIDS. The purpose of this study was 1) to investigate the Nigerian physiotherapy students' knowledge, attitude, and their willingness to provide care for patients living with AIDS (PWA) and to 2) determine the sociodemographic variables that could influence the students' attitude and willingness to provide care for PWA. Physiotherapy students (N = 104) in four training programs in Nigeria were surveyed using a two-part questionnaire. Part I elicited sociodemographic and previous AIDS encounter information, and Part II assessed knowledge, attitude, and willingness to provide care to PWA. Nigerian students showed unsatisfactory knowledge, harbored negative attitude, and many of them were unwilling to render care for PWA. Religious affiliation, training programs, long-term career goals, and previous instructions on AIDS influenced the students' attitude. The study identified the need for a comprehensive AIDS curriculum and recommend that all programs in Nigeria include clinical clerkship, small group discussions, and seminars on ethical and medico-legal issues on AIDS in their curriculum.

Attitudes of professionals, students and the general public to HIV/AIDS and people with HIV/AIDS: a review of the research

This paper provides a review relating to the attitudes of health care professionals, students and the general public to HIV/AIDS and people with HIV/AIDS. This is done by describing the literature on attitudes to HIV and AIDS in three fields of research: medicine/nursing, psychology and the social sciences. In addition, we look at the countries in which research has been conducted in these issues and at the variety of tools and methodological approaches used and at the participants studied. The review shows that, during the 1990s, the research interest in issues related to HIV/AIDS attitudes has rapidly increased. Most of the work on HIV and AIDS has been done in the United States, with the main focus on empirical research using questionnaires. The attention has mostly been on students and their attitudes to AIDS/HIV and sexual behaviour, but increasing interest has also been shown in the attitudes of health care personnel and students. As it seems that attitudes have been highly resistant to change, more consideration needs to be given to finding appropriate ways of educating the general public, students and health care professionals. A comprehensive analysis is also needed of the different tools used in measuring attitudes and in international comparisons of the attitudes of adolescents, health care professionals and students towards AIDS and AIDS patients.

Those Who Have Will, Those Who Haven't Won't: Caring for HIV-Positive Patients

Nurses' willingness to care for HIV-positive patients continues to be an issue since the inception of the HIV pandemic. This descriptive correlational study found that while nurses' fear of contagion has decreased their willingness to care has not increased in the same proportion. Furthermore, while formal education demonstrated no impact on the willingness of nurses to care for HIV-positive patients, provisions of hands-on care was significantly correlated with willingness to care for HIV-positive patients.

Survey of HIV/AIDS-Related Curricula in Programs of Occupational Therapy

AIDS has affected or will affect virtually every provider of health care. The purpose of this study was to determine the quantity of HIV/AIDS-related curricula in programs of occupational therapy across the United States. A survey was distributed to the program directors of all accredited technical, undergraduate, and graduate programs in the United States. Of the 137 surveys mailed, 95 were returned, yielding a 69%% response rate. Results of the survey indicated that graduate and undergraduate professional programs devoted an average of six classroom hours to this topic while technical programs averaged three classroom hours, with the majority of program directors indicating there is no need for further HIV/AIDS related curricula in their respective programs.
